 Star Trek-style teleportation is still a long way off, researchers have
 revealed a major breakthrough in the field of quantum travel. </span></div>

 teleportation depends on a phenomenon called quantum entanglement, 
which allows connections to be made between atoms, with their 
information being sent to others far away.</span></div>

directly affects the others, even if they are separated over large

 say there are two people, Alice and Bob. Alice wants Bob to have a 
photon that's in the same 'state' as her photon, which we'll call photon
 P.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">For the sake of this analogy, we can pretend that the 'state' is a colour, and photon P is yellow.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">A
 third person named Charlie sends out two entangled photons, photon A to
 Alice and photon B to Bob, which behave as if they are part of the same
 whole. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Both of these photons start out as blue.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Alice's two photons, P, which is yellow, and A, which is blue, 'collide.' </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Alice measures the photons as they annihilate one another. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Although P and A are destroyed in the crash, P's yellow colour is preserved. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Because photon A and photon B are entangled, the yellow colour is 'teleported' to B. </span></div>

 in order to get photon B to become yellow, as photon P originally was, 
Alice needs to send Bob two bits of information to B the 'classical' way
 - for example, by sending pulses of light over an optical fibre.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">When Alice measures the state of her photon, Bob's photon changes state as well, as if flipping a switch.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">But Bob cannot know how the switch flipped unless Alice sends him the bits of information classically.</span></div>

 researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China in 
Shanghai demonstrated the effect over optical fibres in Hefei, China.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">In the <a class="" href="http://www.nature.com/articles/doi:10.1038/nphoton.2016.180" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">second</a>, researchers from the University of Calgary designed another set-up to demonstrate the effect in Calgary, Canada. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Each
 of these experiments is split over three distinct locations, 
traditionally named Alice, Charlie and Bob, to mimic the structure of 
future quantum networks.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">The
 two experiments separately demonstrated using optical fibres for 
quantum teleportation is possible across the length of cities.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">The Calgary study was able to demonstrate the effect across an urban fibre network measuring 3.8 miles (6.2km).  </span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">In
 theory, the technique could be scaled up to work across any distance, 
which could lead to the development of a fibre-based quantum internet 
connecting major cities. </span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">'Combined,
 these two experiments clearly show that teleportation across 
metropolitan distances is technologically feasible, and undoubtedly many
 interesting quantum information experiments in the future will be built
 on this work,' said Frederic Grosshans,  writing in an accompanying 
Nature article.</span></div>

which involves transmitting information securely, including

want to have hackers break the encrypted channel and give them false 
information.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">'Undoubtedly many interesting quantum information experiments in the future will be built on this work,' said Grosshans.</span></div>

 the longer term, the two papers demonstrate that the possibility of 
quantum networks that span a city are a realistic proposition, which is 
an exciting vision for the future.'</span></div>

 scientists have successfully teleported molecules, Dr Kaku believes the
 next step will be to send photons to a lunar base before experimenting 
with larger objects, animals and eventually humans.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">During a recent <a class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcivmBojzVk" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Big Think interview</a>,
 Dr Kaku said; 'In the coming years we do expect to be able to teleport 
molecules, maybe water and carbon dioxide. After that, who knows? Maybe 
even DNA.' </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">However,
 critics have argued there are too many atoms in the human body to 
translate into physical data, then teleport and then rearrange in order.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">There
 is also the argument that in order to transport a living object, it 
would have to effectively die and come back to life when the atoms are 
broken down and reassembled.</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Dr
 Kaku added that while teleportation is physically possible, it does 
come with a set of ethical dilemmas that would need to be addressed.</span></div>

 raises the question, are we nothing but information?' he said. 'Is the 
soul, the essence of who we are, nothing but information?</span></div>

 don't know the answer. All we're saying is that it is physically 
possible to teleport an entire human being across the room or maybe on 
to Mars.' </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">He continued that we have learnt more about the brain in the past 15 years than we have in the rest of human history.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">And crucially, our knowledge of the map of neural connections in the brain, known as the connectome, is rapidly improving.</span></div>

 is thanks to machines such as MRI scanners that can see which parts of 
the brain light up as a person performs different activities.</span></div>

 the short term, we're going to be able to connect our minds to 
computers, so that we'll be able to control exoskeletons,' he said.</span></div>

 be able to perform primitive forms of telepathy, we'll eventually 
record memories, and then Alzheimer's patients will be able to push a 
button and memories will flood in.</span></div>

 that, the Internet will be replaced by the 'Brain-net', where you can 
convey emotions and memories rather than just text.'</span></div>

 into the future, probably the 22nd century, we could control surrogate 
robots on alien worlds with our minds, so we can explore space without 
physically having to go anywhere, according to Dr Kaku.</span></div>

 aliens have already done this, and we're walking into the middle of an 
interstellar system where people commute regularly to planets and stars,
 and we're too stupid to know it,' he said.</span></div>
