F-35 report finds ‘only thing stealthy’ to be ‘the price tag’

On Thursday, a <a href="http://www.pogo.org/straus/issues/weapons/2017/f35-continues-to-stumble.html">new paper</a>
 was released by the Project on Government Oversight (POGO), an 
independent nonprofit that investigates corruption, misconduct, and 
conflicts of interest. In the report, Dan Grazier, a former Marine 
captain and defense policy investigator at POGO, draws on reports to 
outline a history of deficiencies of the F-35, which he calls a “<i>national disaster.</i>” <br />

 Grazier begins with the computer systems built into the jet, 
which are supposed to gather massive amounts of data to allow the pilot 
to “<i>dominate the battlespace.</i>” Instead, he says, they actually “<i>interfere with the pilot’s ability to survive and prevail.</i>”</div>
Tests of the sensors, computers, and software have shown the systems create false targets and report false locations of targets.<br />
Grazier
 reported that several pilots were dissatisfied with the Distributed 
Aperture System (DAS), which allows them to see in any direction, 
including underneath the jet as well as the flight instruments and 
threat symbols through their $600,000 helmet systems.<br />
<br />
Pilots called the system “<i>operationally unusable and potentially unsafe</i>” and reported that their targets were obscured by “<i>symbol cluster</i>,”
 which made many of them see double. Grazier says that pilots are 
turning the system off and choosing to rely on the traditional 
instrument panels instead.<br />
“<i>Here again, the system is little better than those it’s supposed to replace,</i>” Grazier says.<br />
The
 report also says that electronics that share data with other F-35s are 
creating erroneous or split images of targets, and sometimes even 
dropping images of targets altogether.<br />
“<i>All of this means that
 the systems meant to give the pilots a better understanding of the 
world around them can do exactly the opposite,</i>” Grazier said.<br />
<br />
Software
 changes only enable the jet to carry two radar-guided advanced 
medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs), which are not optimized for 
close, visual-range combat, further diminishing its air-to-air 
capabilities.<br />
Grazier also says the planes are not stealth 
capable, are ineffective at providing close air support, and unsuitable 
for carrier operations.<br />

President Donald Trump has also questioned
 the program and called on Lockheed Martin to cut $600 million from the 
last batch of F-35s. However, this may end up costing the taxpayers 
more, as the F-35 that will be bought are untested and will need to be 
retrofitted.<br />
The taxpayers will also have to provide additional funding for modernization, modifications, maintenance, and repair.<br />

While the planes have not shown significant improvement over their predecessors, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has <a href="http://www.gao.gov/assets/680/676012.pdf">estimated</a> it will cost at least $3 billion to modernize the planes over the next six years.<br />

the F-35A. The 2016 production-only cost for the Marine Corps’ F-35B and
 the Navy’s F-35C is $166.4 million and $185.2 million per plane, 
respectively.<br />

At the same time, the US Marine Corp has laid out their future <a href="http://www.aviation.marines.mil/Portals/11/Documents/2017%20Marine%20Aviation%20Plan.pdf?ver=2017-03-23-102943-260">plans</a>, which call for small, agile “<i>lightning carriers</i>”
 that will carry 16 to 20 F-35Bs. Most of the plan revolves around the 
F-35, which the Marines say will replace F/A-18, AV-8B, and EA-6B.<br />
The plan calls for the Marine Corp to procure a total of 353 F-35s, which they say “<i>will be the cornerstone of a multi-mission joint force.</i>”<br />

<li>It is thought that the Type 075 development project was officially launched in 2012</li>
<li>The published R & D documents show that the pre-studies have 
been carried out at least since 2008 by several research offices and 
research institutes, including the CSSC 708 Institute and the Chinese 
Naval Equipment Department</li>
<li>In July 2016, the technical proposal was submitted to the reviews of
 a committee comprised of industry, academic and naval experts</li>
<li>The first sheet cutting would have taken place at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai at the end of 2016</li>
<li>In its original configuration, the Chinese helicopter carrier had 
displacement of 48,000 tonnes and was capable of transporting up to 38 
helicopters, that's close to the US Navy's Wasp class</li>
<li>But for unknown reasons - probably because of budget, propulsion, or
 changing operational requirements - the solution chosen is a 
36,000-tonne vessel with a capacity of 28 helicopters</li>
<li>Note that the diesel engine 16PC2-6B of 9,000 kW will be part of the
 propulsion of the Type 075, according to an article published in June 
2015, quoting the statement of the CEO of Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., 
Ltd, a CSSC subsidiary specializing in marine diesel engines. The same 
family of diesel engines is also used by the 40,000 tonne Type 901 
tanker and the amphibious assault ship Type 071 of 20,000 tonnes</li>
<li>Details of the on-board equipment are missing at the moment, but the
 ship will be a priori equipped with two CIWS H / PJ-11 guns and two 
CIWS HQ-10 missiles for its self-protection</li>
<li>We should hopefully see the first modules of this Type 075 before 
the end of the year. Our sources told the first order consisted of three
 units, but the final number could vary depending on the geopolitical 
situation. </li>

At this year’s SIMA, one of the most important agricultural business 
trade shows on the planet, farmers and agricultural industry executives 
were introduced to a number of drones specifically designed to help 
farmers everywhere work smarter and more efficiently in areas such as 
crop inspection, irrigation management, crop consulting and spraying. By
 utilizing innovative drone technology coupled with the very latest 
software, farmers are now able to reduce the time it takes to complete 
routine tasks, maximize crop yields and ultimately increase their 
profits.<br />

Or, put more simply, the whole world of Precision Agriculture has become a *very* big thing.<br />

One of the stars of the show was <a class="externalLink" href="http://www.dji.com/mg-1s" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">DJI’s AGRAS MG-1S</a>, an upgrade of the <a class="externalLink" href="http://www.dji.com/mg-1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">DJI AGRAS MG-1</a> which was launched back in 2015.<br />

The AGRAS MG-1S integrates a number of cutting-edge DJI technologies, 
including the new A3 Flight Controller, which has an algorithm optimized
 for agricultural use – ensuring stable flight even with sloshing 
liquids disrupting the balance of the aerial platform. The radar system 
is made up of three high-precision, millimetre-wave radars placed on the
 front & rear slopes and the bottom of the spray tank. The first two
 detect the terrain, allowing the aircraft to adjust its height. The 
downward radar provides precise height.<br />
<br />
As the radars scan, the MG-1S is able to perceive the change of terrain 
and adjust its altitude above the crops accordingly. When paired with 
the MG Intelligent Operation Planning System and the DJI Agriculture 
Management Platform, farmers are able to work with a powerful tool to 
plan operations, manage flights in real-time, and closely monitor the 
aircraft operating status.<br />

But it takes the correct software to optimize this product.<br />

 compromise devices manufactured by Apple including the iPhone and

 from WikiLeaks, the whistleblower group said Thursday's ‘Dark Matter’ 
leak includes details of the ‘Sonic Screwdriver’ project, described by 
the CIA as a<i> "mechanism for executing code on peripheral devices while a Mac laptop or desktop is booting."</i><br />
<b><br /></b>
Techniques
 named in the release detail methods that could allow devices to be 
compromised between the manufacturing line and the end user or by a CIA 
asset in close proximity to a target.

The projects, developed by the CIA's Embedded Development Branch 
(EDB), attack Apple’s firmware meaning that any infections are 
persistent regardless of efforts to remove them, including if the 
operating system is reinstalled.<br />
WikiLeaks said this allows an 
attacker to boot its attack software from a USB stick on to a device 
even when a firmware password is enabled on the device, meaning the 
read-only memory of a device can be modified using ‘Sonic Screwdriver’.<br />
The infector is stored in the Apple Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter, claim WikiLeaks.<br />
The
 latest leak consists of five documents, ‘Sonic Screwdriver’, ‘DerStarke
 v1.4’, DetStarke v1.4 RC1 - IVVRR CHecklist’, ‘Triton v1.3’ and 
DarkSeaSkies v1.0 - URDSee more’.<br />

Within the released tranche is a tool known as NightSkies, which 
allows the CIA to infiltrate factory fresh iPhones and track and control
 them remotely, granting <i>“full remote command and control,”</i> to the CIA.<br />
NightSkies allows the CIA to take files from iPhones, including details from the owner’s phonebook, text messages and call logs.<br />
<br />
The
 revelation that the CIA is physically infiltrating factory fresh phones
 suggests it has accessed an organization's supply chain, meaning they 
may be intercepting the phones as they are shipped to targets, with CIA 
agents or assets tampering with suspects’ phones before they have even 
been received. <br />
Also included in the documents are details about a
 number of other tools employed by the CIA to infiltrate Apple products,
 affording the CIA a variety of command and control capabilities.<br />
<br />
DarkSeaSkies
 is an implant that is found in the firmware of an Apple MacBook Air 
that runs in the background and allows the CIA command and control 
capabilities over a targeted device . A 2009 ‘user requirements’ 
document on DarkSeaSkies details how assets should install DarkSeaSkies.<br />
<b><br /></b>
The
 second data dump comes two weeks after Assange said WikiLeaks will give
 tech companies exclusive access to leaked information they obtained 
from the CIA in the first part of ‘Vault 7’, known as ‘Zero Days’.

Assange said WikiLeaks did not publish all details of the hacking 
techniques revealed in the leaks as it would result in both the <i>“good guys”</i> and the <i>“bad guys”</i> getting them at the same time.<br />
The
 second release in the series details the techniques that WikiLeaks 
claims are employed by CIA assets to compromise Apple devices between 
the manufacturing line and the end user.<br />

On the alleged demands, 
Assange said a standard industry 90-day timeframe was given to tech 
companies for them to provide encryption keys to WikiLeaks in order for 
them to communicate details of the exploits.<br />
Assange said Microsoft contacted WikiLeaks on March 20 without <i>“agreeing to the standard terms.”</i>
 On the same day, Google also contacted the whistleblower group, 
refusing to agree to WikiLeaks’ terms, which Assange claims are 
standard, instead providing their own terms and a <a href="http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/definition/Pretty-Good-Privacy">PGP-encrypted</a> email.<br />
<br />
He did not give details on Microsoft and Google's requested terms but alluded to their <i>“revolving door”</i> relationship with military and security contractors as reasons for their reluctance.<br />
Assange
 said any fixes required by tech companies should take a few weeks and 
that the 90 day timeframe is sufficient. He added that if a company 
contacted them requesting more time, they’d be open to discussion.

morning. Based on our initial analysis, the alleged iPhone vulnerability
 affected iPhone 3G only and was fixed in 2009 when iPhone 3GS was

preliminary assessment shows the alleged Mac vulnerabilities were 
previously fixed in all Macs launched after 2013.”</i><br />

Apple was referring to CIA tools such as NightSkies, DarkSeaSkies, Triton and Sonic Screwdriver used to infiltrate the iPhone, MacBooks and desktops.<br />
<i>“Apple's claim that it has ‘fixed’ all ‘vulnerabilities’ described in DARKMATTER is duplicitous,”</i> WikiLeaks tweeted in response.<i>
 “EFI [Extensible Firmware Interface] is a systemic problem, not a 
zero-day [vulnerability in software or hardware that can be exploited to
 hack systems and is often later patched.]”</i><br />
<br />
EFI loads a computer’s operating system and is behind the boot sequence of a computer.<br />
<i>“If you change something before that [booting], you’re controlling everything,”</i> firmware hacker Karsten Nohl <a href="https://www.wired.com/2017/03/wikileaks-shows-cia-can-hack-macs-hidden-code/">told</a> Wired.<i> “It becomes part of your computer. There’s no way of knowing that it’s there, and also hardly any way to get rid of it.”</i><br />

WikiLeaks’ Dark Matter release Thursday <a href="https://wikileaks.org/vault7/darkmatter/">explained</a> that while many of the documents are from up to 2013,<i>
 “other Vault 7 documents show that as of 2016 the CIA continues to rely
 on and update these systems and is working on the production of 
DerStarke2.0.”</i><br />

Whether Apple has fixed all the vulnerabilities featured in Dark 
Matter, the documents show CIA’s capabilities and suggest it has likely 
continued to attempt to infiltrate newer Apple products.<br />
The 
company responded to the first batch of documents released by WikiLeaks 
as part of its massive #Vault7 earlier this month. It said <i>“many”</i> of the exploits featured in the documents had already been patched in the latest iOS update and that it was working to<i> “rapidly address any identified vulnerabilities.”</i><br />

At a March 11 soccer game in Wuhan, police faced a new kind of threat: drones trespassing near the stadium.
On the day, police managed to safely down six active drones from up to 1 kilometer away, reports the Changjiang Daily.<br />

 technology promises to safely remove the device from the sky by 
enabling a controlled landing, avoiding a crash that could destroy the 
drone and/or injure someone on the ground. <br />

The anti-drone technology is the antidote for China’s thriving drone 
producing industry, which has caused several headaches for officials 
like airport delays and security risks at large gatherings.<br />
China has <a href="http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-issues-draft-rules-to-regulate-fledgling-drone-industry" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">already</a>
 implemented a compulsory registration system for owners of drones 
weighing more than 7kg and enforces strict airspace rules in built up 
and urban areas.<br />

Costing around $36,200 a piece, Wuhan police are buying a further 19 guns before next month’s city marathon, <a href="http://www.ctdsb.net/html/2017/0311/hubei85783.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">reports</a> the Chutian Metropolitan Daily.

A technology miracle able to launch relatively cheap tungsten projectiles at the speed of Mach 6 (7,400 kph, 4,600 mph), <em>“obliterating everything in its path.” </em><br />The gun is said to be able to target almost any target within a 125-mile radius, be it on land or at sea, including incoming missiles. The missile defense capability, however, is theorized to be <em>“at least a decade away.”</em><br />

The US Navy has revealed a video of the first commissioning 
tests of a railgun, a futuristic weapon that many people hope could 
shift the balance of power in naval warfare away from aircraft carriers 
and back to surface warships. </div>

Navy has been pursuing the railgun for years, but the project has been 
hamstrung by the sheer amount of power required to make it work, 
measured in megajoules of electricity.<br />
<br />
UK-based BAE Systems 
appears to have made an operational railgun, however, and test fired it 
at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia in November 
2016. A short video of that test was made public by the Office of Naval 
Research on Tuesday.<br />

The railgun is designed around the principle of launching a metal 
projectile using a series of magnetic coils, rather than chemical 
propellant. Because of this, it is also known as the coilgun or Gauss 
rifle, after the German mathematician credited with discovering the 
concept in the 19th century.<br />
<br />
BAE Systems tested a 32-joule 
half-power prototype at Dahlgren in 2013. The full-power version was 
scheduled for testing in mid-2016 aboard the USNS Trenton, a 
Spearhead-class expeditionary transport, but the schedule was pushed 
back to mid-2017 without an explanation.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a25759/electromagnetic-cannon-railgun-test-fire-commissioning-series/">Popular Mechanics</a>
 has speculated that the railgun might end up being installed on board 
one of the three ships in the Zumwalt class, the experimental 
super-destroyer with a power plant strong enough to operate the weapon. 
The recently commissioned USS Zumwalt has been experiencing difficulties
 with its 155mm Advanced Gun Systems, designed around the projectiles 
that cost around $800,000 apiece.<br />

The vast power consumption can so far be

It’s in this kind of environment that robotics and 
engineering students put Valkyrie’s skills to the test and have further 
developed its “<em>high-level capabilities</em>”.<br />

 theory, the successors to these Robonauts would help facilitate the

their arrival and further assisting the astronauts with tasks while on

 the not too distant future, R5 has arrived on Mars along with supplies 
ahead of a human mission. Overnight a dust storm damaged the habitat and
 solar array, and caused the primary communication antenna to become 
misaligned</em>,” the agency’s simulated event suggests.<br />
The robot must repair the damage, deploy a new solar panel and align the communication antenna to complete the challenge.<br />
