        Seeing the Cheetah 3 robot from MIT leap, gallop and climb a
staircase littered with debris is almost enough to make a person prepare
 to welcome our new animatronic overlords.
    </div>
<strong><br /></strong>
Footage
 of the experiments shows researchers from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) putting the Labrador-sized mechanical beast through its
 paces, making it run on a treadmill and climb cluttered steps while
being periodically pulled sharply from behind with a leash.<br />
<br />
The
four-legged robot was tested without cameras or any external sensors,
making the machine essentially blind. Designer Sangbae Kim believes that
 such experiments are essential to finding out what the robot is capable
 of without relying too much on vision.<br />
<br />
<em>“If humans close our
eyes and make a step, we have a mental model for where the ground might
be, and can prepare for it. But we also rely on the feel of touch of the
 ground,”</em> Kim explained to <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2018/blind-cheetah-robot-climb-stairs-obstacles-disaster-zones-0705" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MIT News</a>. <em>“We are sort of doing the same thing by combining multiple [sources of] information to determine the transition time.”</em><br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
The robot’s incredible balance can be credited to two new pieces of
code, a contact detection algorithm and a model-predictive control
algorithm which help the machine determine how to react to different
types of terrain. <em>“It’s thanks to that predictive control that can
apply the right forces on the ground, combined with this contact
transition algorithm that makes each contact very quick and secure,”</em> Kim said.<br />
<strong><br /></strong>
In
 2015, footage of the Cheetah 2 robot showed the MIT-developed robot
jumping over small obstacles with a 90 percent success rate. The
previous incarnation of the robot relied on a visual system that used
reflections from a laser to map terrain.<br />
<strong><br /></strong>
The
 Cheetah is somewhat reminiscent of the SpotMini, another dog-like robot
 developed by Boston Dynamics. The company hopes to make the robot
available commercially in 2019.<br />

Hi-tech drones that look and move like real birds have already flown<br />
<br />
If you’ve ever looked up to the sky and enjoyed the sight of a bird
gliding above, be warned: it could be a Chinese drone monitoring your
every move.<br />
<div class="v2-processed">
The
 idea might seem far fetched, but robotic birds are very much a reality,
 and China has been using them to surveil people across the country.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Sources told the <i>South China Morning Post</i>
 that more than 30 military and government agencies have deployed the
birdlike drones and related devices in at least five provinces in recent
 years.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
One part of the country that has seen the new technology used extensively is the <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2148566/revealed-advanced-surveillance-tech-used-chinas-police" shape="rect">Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region</a>
 in China’s far west. The vast area, which borders Mongolia, Russia,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, is
home to a large Muslim population and has long been viewed by Beijing as
 a hotbed for separatism. As a result, the region and its people have
been subjected to heavy surveillance from the central government.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
The new “spy birds” programme, code-named
“Dove”, is being led by Song Bifeng, a professor at Northwestern
Polytechnical University in Xian, capital of northwestern China’s
Shaanxi province. Song was formerly a senior scientist on the J-20
stealth jet programme and has already been honoured by the People’s
Liberation Army – China’s military – for his work on Dove, according to
information on the university website.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Yang Wenqing, an associate professor at the
School of Aeronautics at Northwestern and a member of Song’s team,
confirmed the use of the new technology but said it was not widespread.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
“The scale is still small,” compared to other types of drones in use today, she told the <i>South China Morning Post</i>.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
“We believe the technology has good potential
for large-scale use in the future … it has some unique advantages to
meet the demand for drones in the military and civilian sectors,” she
said.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Unlike unmanned aerial vehicles with fixed wings
 or rotor blades, the new drones actually mimic the flapping action of a
 bird’s wings to climb, dive and turn in the air.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Another researcher involved in the Dove project
said the aim was to develop a new generation of drones with biologically
 inspired engineering that could evade human detection and even radar.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
The machines in China’s current robot flock
replicate about 90 per cent of the movements of a real dove, the person
said, adding that they also produce very little noise, making them very
hard to detect from the ground, and are so lifelike that actual birds
often fly alongside them.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
The team conducted almost 2,000 test flights
before deploying the drones in real-life situations, said the
researcher, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the
programme.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
One experiment in northern China’s Inner
Mongolia involved flying the birds over a flock of sheep – animals that
are well known for their keen sense of hearing and ability to be easily
spooked. The flock paid no attention whatsoever to the drone flying
above, the person said.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Although the technology is still in its early
stages of development, its wide range of possible uses – not only for
the police and military, but also in the fields of emergency response
and disaster relief, environmental protection and urban planning – means
 the market for the drones could be worth 10 billion yuan (US$1.54
billion) in China alone, the researcher said.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Humans have been obsessed by the idea of flight
since the dawn of time. And in the century or so since Wilbur and
Orville Wright briefly took to the skies at Kitty Hawk, engineers and
scientists have been trying to decode the secrets of bird flight to
improve aircraft performance.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Birds are incredibly efficient fliers. The
bar-tailed godwit, for instance, despite weighing only 290 grams (10
ounces) flies 11,000km (6,800 miles) non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand
 every autumn. The epic journey takes just eight days.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
In comparison, the Dove drones weigh 200 grams,
have a wingspan of about 50 centimetres (20 inches), and can fly at
speeds of up to 40km/h (25mph) for a maximum of 30 minutes.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Each machine is fitted with a high-definition
camera, GPS antenna, flight control system and data link with satellite
communication capability. The flapping mechanism comprises a pair of
crank-rockers driven by an electric motor, while the wings themselves
can deform slightly when moving up and down, which generates not only
lift but also thrust to drive the drone forward.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Specially designed software helps to counter any
 jerky movements to ensure the on-board camera achieves sharp images and
 stable video.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
The Dove drones’ ability to seemingly melt into
the background has attracted a lot of interest in military and
government circles.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Professor Li Yachao, a military radar researcher
 at the National Defence Technology Laboratory of Radar Signal
Processing in Xian, said the movement of the Dove’s wings was so
lifelike it could fool even the most sensitive radar systems.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
The use of camouflage – perhaps even real
feathers – on the drone’s outer body could distort the radar signature
still further, he said.</div>

<div class="v2-processed image no-float">
<a class="colorbox colorbox-insert-image init-colorbox-processed-processed cboxElement" href="https://cdn1.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/06/24/d0b7326e-7513-11e8-aa4d-d2a0e82fc143_image_hires_204148.JPG" rel="gallery-43802378-744c-11e8-aa4d-d2a0e82fc143"><span class="image-caption-container image-caption-container-none" style="clear: none; display: inline-block; float: none; width: 486px;"><img class="caption lazyload-processed magic-processed loaded" data-ignore="true" data-original="https://cdn2.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/06/24/d0b7326e-7513-11e8-aa4d-d2a0e82fc143_972x_204148.JPG" data-resolution="2" height="320" src="https://cdn2.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/06/24/d0b7326e-7513-11e8-aa4d-d2a0e82fc143_972x_204148.JPG" title="Each of China’s bird drone is fitted with a high-definition camera, GPS antenna, flight control system and data link with satellite communication capability. <div class="v2-processed">
Aware of the dangers such stealth drones pose to
 conventional detection systems, radar scientists have been looking at
new ways to spot and track small, low-altitude targets flying at slow
speed.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
These include the holographic radar, which is
capable of producing three-dimensional images of flying objects and has
been hailed as a significant step forward in detection technology.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
However, “there is no guarantee” that even a
holographic radar – or any of the other new technologies in development –
 would be able to detect a drone with a wing-flapping pattern that was
almost identical to those found in nature, and “especially if it was
surrounded by other birds”, Li said.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
“It would be a serious threat” to air defence systems, he said.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
The Dove is not the only avian drone to have
been developed in China. In 2012, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and
Astronautics released “Tian Ying”, a robotic bird about the size of an
eagle.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Also, according to information on government
websites, the Harbin Institute of Technology, China’s top university for
 defence research, is developing a bird drone with a large wingspan and
the ability to operate in the thin air found on high plateaus.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
But China is not alone in developing robotic birds</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
In 2013, the US Army bought more than 30 drones
from Florida-based Prioria Robotics that were designed to look like
birds of prey.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Their likeness to raptors was only cosmetic, however, as they were propelled by turbofans and their wings did not move.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
A far more convincing robotic raptor,
appropriately named “Robird”, has been developed by Dutch tech firm
Clear Flight Solutions. Although it looks and flies like a real bird,
the drone, which is currently available only for demonstration purposes,
 requires an operator for take-off and landing, and its battery lasts
less than 10 minutes.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
According to the company’s website, the device’s primary use is scaring birds away from airports and crops.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">

<div class="v2-processed">
In 2011, Germany’s Festo Corporation developed
“SmartBird”, a robotic herring gull that had the ability to take-off,
fly and land without the need for human intervention.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Although it was one of the most lifelike robotic
 birds ever built, it was never released to the market and the company
was cited by <i>Science</i> magazine as saying it had no interest in making the technology available for military applications.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
According to a recent government document seen by the <i>Post</i>, China’s military has tested the Dove system and is impressed with it.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
An evaluation of the system by an unspecified
military research centre concluded that the drone, with its ability to
stay in the air for more than 20 minutes and travel 5km, had “practical
value”.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Gan Xiaohua, chief engineer at the PLA Air Force
 Equipment Research Institute in Beijing, said Dove’s unique design
meant it could convert electrical power into mechanical force with “high
 efficiency”.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
It is “the world’s only bionic micro drone

<div class="v2-processed">
Although the <i>Post</i> was unable to reach project leader Song for comment, in an April interview with the Chinese academic journal <i>Aeronautical Manufacturing Technology</i>, he confirmed that Dove and other devices had been deployed in Xinjiang and other provinces.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
“The products … have stimulated change and
development in sectors including environmental protection, land planning
 … and border patrol,” he was quoted as saying.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Despite the technological advances made on the Dove project, China’s bird-like drones were still far from perfect, Song said.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Besides being unable to travel long distances or
 maintain course in strong winds, their performance could be badly
hampered by heavy rain or snow, he said.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
Also, the absence of an anti-collision mechanism
 meant the drones were prone to crash into things when flying at low
altitude, while their electronic circuitry was vulnerable to
electromagnetic disturbance.</div>

<div class="v2-processed">
Nevertheless, researchers were working hard to resolve these problems, and with advancements in <a href="https://www.scmp.com/topics/artificial-intelligence" shape="rect" target="_self">artificial intelligence</a>
 technology, such as deep learning, Song said he hoped the next
generation of robotic birds would be able to fly in complex formations
and make independent decisions in the air.</div>
<div class="v2-processed">
When that day comes, the Doves would be able to “match or surpass the intelligence of creatures found in nature”, he said.</div>

Boston Dynamics Robots can now open doors and escape

<br />
Boston Dynamics <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUyU3lKzoio" target="_blank">posted a video</a><span style="margin-left: 5px; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></span> of its <a href="https://www.bostondynamics.com/spot-mini" target="_blank">SpotMini</a>
 quadruped robot extending an arm out of its head to turn a handle. With
 the dexterity of a tray-carrying butler, it uses its foot to prop the
door ajar, then elbows it all the way open for its (armless) SpotMini
friend to walk through. At face value, it's a pretty incredible feat.
But it's also an interesting twist in the quest to make robots that get
along with a world built by and for humans. Maybe the Darpa Robotics
Challenge had it wrong with humanoids after all, and the best robots for
 rescue operations will look nothing like humans—or any other animal,
for that matter.<br />
<br />
<div class="paywall">
At the moment, humanoids are
great at two things: Looking like humans and falling on their faces, as
the Robotics Challenge showed so well. (Though one particular humanoid,
Cassie, does much better in part because it doesn't yet have an <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/want-a-robot-to-walk-like-you-dont-expect-it-to-look-human/">upper body to worry about yet</a>.)
 Walking on two legs is a monumental challenge; that’s why Chimp, a
vaguely humanoid machine that rolled on treads instead of lumbering on
two legs, <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/the-legend-of-chimp-the-vaguely-humanoid-robot/">did so well</a>.</div>
<div class="paywall">
  </div>
<div class="paywall">
<img alt="" class="u-block" data-src="https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/963334213914251264/9IG10rX0?format=jpg&name=600x314" height="334" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/963334213914251264/9IG10rX0?format=jpg&name=600x314" width="640" /></div>
<div class="paywall">
<br /></div>
<div class="paywall">
And
 also why SpotMini has such promise. Humanoids should be inherently
well-equipped to explore environments built for humans, what with all
the stairs and such. But SpotMini has a leg up (sorry) here because four
 limbs are inherently more stable than two. Not to mention that it’s
more energy efficient if you don’t have to constantly balance your
machine to not fall on its face.</div>
<div class="paywall">
Plus, well, this bot <em>technically</em>
 has five limbs. This newest version of SpotMini marries the stability
of a quadruped with the dexterity of a human. It’s a hybrid creature
that shows the awesome power of robotics: Human engineers are inventing
an incredible array of new species because they’re not bound by the rules of nature, just physics.
 Want to put an extra arm on a four-legged robot? Go ahead. And why not
make Chimp roll instead of step, if that makes it more stable?</div>
<div class="paywall">
SpotMini
 is but one species in a robotic kingdom that is exploding with
diversity. And it’s thanks in large part to door handles. <em>Finally</em>, a technology whose time has come.</div>

Technology of the future: Robots use foresight to imagine actions

<div class="article__summary summary ">
        Scientists have developed new technology that allows robots to
imagine their future actions, enabling them to maneuver objects they
have they have never encountered before – all without human assistance. </div>
<div class="article__summary summary ">
 </div><br />
Using a
 technology called ‘visual foresight,’ robots can imagine what their
camera’s will see if they move objects in a certain way. Though the
robot, called ‘Vestri,’ currently can only use its powers of foresight
to imagine a few seconds into the future, it is thought that the
technology will one day be used in self-driving cars and produce more
intelligent home assistants.<br />
<br />
Researchers at UC Berkeley in
California are at the forefront of this breakthrough, which allows the
robots to learn how to perform these tasks without any prior knowledge
about the objects, physics or its environment. Vestri’s visual
imagination is learned entirely from scratch. Much like a child, the
machine simply plays with the objects. In fact, the researchers took
inspiration from what they call babies’ <em>“motor babbling,”</em>
programing that kind of learning into the robot. When playtime is over,
it builds a predictive model of the world and then uses it to manipulate
 objects, and all without the help of mom and dad.<br />
<br />
Using its cameras, the machine produces a variety of scenarios which
haven’t yet happened, it imagines what will happen, and then chooses the
 most effective way of moving an object from one place to another.<br />
<br />

<br />
<em>“In the same way that we can imagine how our actions will move
the objects in our environment, this method can enable a robot to
visualize how different behaviors will affect the world around it,”</em> Sergey Levine, an assistant professor at Berkley,<a href="http://news.berkeley.edu/2017/12/04/robots-see-into-their-future/"> said</a> in a university press release. <em>“This can enable intelligent planning of highly flexible skills in complex real-world situations,”</em> he added.<br />
<br />
The
 method relies solely on autonomously collected information, unlike
conventional computer-vision methods in which thousands or even millions
 of images must be painstakingly labeled and programed into a machine.
For this reason, researchers say the technology is <em>“general and broadly applicable.”</em><br />
<br />
The
 team will demonstrate Vestri’s abilities at the Neural Information
Processing Systems conference in Long Beach, California, on December 5.<br />

Next generation ‘robot dog’ moves just like real life pooch

<br />
<br />
It may move like a cheery family dog, but as a first look at the latest
creation from Boston Dynamic reveals, the SpotMini is anything but. <br />
<br />
The robotics firm posted a sneak preview of the newest version of its
SpotMini robot to YouTube Monday. The robot appears a sleeker and more
agile upgrade on the rather less sure-footed prototype unveiled in June
last year.<br />
<br />
The new teaser video finishes on the caption ‘coming soon,’ but it’s
unclear whether Boston Dynamics is referring to the release of a retail
version or simply a longer video of its robot dog scampering about on
the lawn.<br />

Once
 owned by Google’s Alphabet Inc, Boston Dynamics was sold to Japanese
telecoms and technology firm SoftBank earlier this year. In February,
Boston Dynamics showed off its parkour robot Handle, demonstrating some
impressive jumps and also showing it could be put to practical use
moving boxes.<br />
<br />
The development of the firm’s humanoid Atlas robot has also caused
further alarm among those already deeply troubled by the rate at which
robots are getting better at human tasks. A <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/1705.08807.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">study</a>
 from Oxford and Yale University, based on responses from more than 300
AI experts, said AI could automate all human tasks by 2053.<br />

United Arab Emirates policing is entering an even more advanced
futuristic phase, after the city of Dubai signed a deal that will see
mini, self-driving cop cars deployed to fight street crime.
Dubai has already experimented with android policing, with the deployment of its first robotic officer of the law in May.<br />
Now an agreement has been reached by UAE vice president Sheikh Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum and a Singapore firm over an autonomous security
vehicle known as O-R3.<br />
<br />
The sleek robot by Otsaw Digital has four wheels and can navigate its
surroundings using a series of sensors attached to its bodywork. <br />
According to its makers, the O-R3 comes equipped with a range of cameras that will enable it to carry out “<i>facial and license plate recognition.”</i><br />

When faced with an obstacle that it cannot overcome, the O-R3 also has
the ability to send out a surveillance drone in order to keep tabs on a
fleeing suspect, footage of the vehicle reveals. <br />
Meanwhile, human monitors have the ability to take over control of the robot from a centralized location. <br />
<br />
<i>“In
 an industry plagued with high turnover, OR-3 ensures fulfilment of 24/7
 security shifts that keeps premises secure at all time and reduces the
reliance on human guards,”</i> the Otsaw Digital website states.<br />
<i>“No off days… OR-3 performs its security duties with machine driven efficiency, 24/7, 365.”</i><br />
<br />
The new deal was signed Wednesday and later announced on the Dubai Police website. <br />
<i>“Dubai Police are keen to get the latest technology to fight crime,</i>” said Dubai police commander, Major General Abdullah Al-Marri. <br />
<br />
He added: <i>“The
 self-driving robot is the latest addition to intelligent forces of the
Dubai Police, and it has been specifically designed to be used on the
streets of the city. </i><br />
<i>“It will also help to combat crime, maintain safety and enhance people’s happiness.”</i><br />
<br />
The
 OR-3 is expected to appear at the Gitex technology fair in Dubai this
October and should be ready for full deployment to the police force
before 2021.<br />
