<div class="body-text">
A new high definition radar system that could
change the nature of warfare has been demonstrated for the first time.
The result, quantum radar, is a high definition detection system that
provides a much more detailed image of targets while itself remaining
difficult to detect. Quantum radars could provide users with enough
detail to identify aircraft, missiles, and other aerial targets by
specific model. </div>
<div class="body-text">
According to the <em>MIT Technology Review</em>, researchers at Austria’s Institute of Science and Technology used entangled microwaves to <a class="body-link" data-vars-ga-outbound-link="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614160/quantum-radar-has-been-demonstrated-for-the-first-time/" href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614160/quantum-radar-has-been-demonstrated-for-the-first-time/"><u>create the world’s first quantum radar system</u></a>. </div>
<br />
<div class="body-text">
Under a principle known as quantum entanglement,
two particles can be linked together regardless of distance, forming
what scientists call a quantum entangled pair. When something happens to
 one particle it can be noticed in the other particle. This in turn
leads to a process called quantum illumination, where information about
one particle’s environment can be inferred by studying the other
particle.</div>
<div class="body-text">
Quantum radars involve pairing photon
particles together, shooting one downrange while keeping the second
captive for observation. The downrange particle will act in a certain
manner as it bounces off certain objects, behavior that can be observed
in the captive particle. The result is much more detailed information
about the target than seen in previous radars. </div>
<div class="body-text">
Today’s
 radars can detect targets very well, but provide little detail. Radars
can detect an object and note it's altitude, bearing, and distance, but
otherwise the target is a big, featureless blob. Air defenders must rely
 on other things, such identifying radar and other electromagnetic
signals emanating from the target, to discern whether the blob is an
enemy fighter, bomber, or even a commercial civilian aircraft. </div>
<div class="body-text">
Quantum
 radars, on the other hand, could provide enough detail for radar
systems to identify the object based on physical characteristics. A
Su-35 Flanker-E fighter, for example, could be identified by the sweep
of its wings, the shape of its nose, and the number of engines. </div>
<div class="embed embed-editorial-links embed-left" data-align="left">
<br /></div>
<div class="body-text">
Another benefit of quantum radars: they emit very
little energy and are thus difficult to detect. All contemporary radars
emit electromagnetic radiation to detect objects. This radiation makes
the radar itself detectable. It’s a lot like having lots of people
holding flashlights in a dark room: turning on your flashlight allows
you to find other people but the flashlight beam leads straight back to
you, giving away your presence and location. </div>
<div class="body-text">
A
lack of detectability offers a distinct tactical advantage in warfare. A
 friendly quantum radar could detect a flight of enemy aircraft without
revealing its own presence. This could cause the enemy warplanes to put
off defensively jamming local radars and radio signals—which itself is
noticeable to the defenders. Their guard down, they could then be
ambushed by friendly air defense missiles and fighters waiting for them.
 </div>
<div class="body-text">
Quantum radars has been billed as a means for detecting stealth aircraft, with <a class="body-link" data-vars-ga-outbound-link="https://phys.org/news/2018-04-quantum-radar-expose-stealth-aircraft.html" href="https://phys.org/news/2018-04-quantum-radar-expose-stealth-aircraft.html"><u>claims</u></a> that it renders efforts to make aircraft invisible to radar useless. According to three experts polled by<a class="body-link" data-vars-ga-outbound-link="https://eandt.theiet.org/content/articles/2019/04/could-quantum-radars-expose-stealth-planes/" href="https://eandt.theiet.org/content/articles/2019/04/could-quantum-radars-expose-stealth-planes/"> <em><u>Engineering and Technology</u></em></a>, anti-stealth claims are a “gross oversimplication” and the main advantage of quantum radar is the high definition aspect. </div>

 Will China’s new laser satellite become the ‘Death Star’ for submarines?<br />
The team has come up with an innovative approach
 that has not been tried before.
The device is designed to generate high-power
laser beam pulses in different colours, or frequencies, that allow
sensitive receivers to pick up more information from various depths. <br />
The main target for the satellite was the thermocline – a
 thin layer of water where the temperature changes abruptly. The thermocline is known to be
important for submarine captains because it can reflect active sonar and
 other acoustic signals. That means a vessel could potentially avoid
detection in the thermocline, but not by a laser beam. <br />
<br />
New spy satellite 'Project Guanlan' could use lasers to spot submarines up to 1,600ft (500m) below the ocean's surface.<br />

the US in research funded by Nasa and the Defence Advanced Research

metres, detecting targets as small as sea mines.</div>

<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.bestchinanews.com/Military/9294.html" target="_blank">New materials</a> will increase the radar detection range by 50 times </b> <br />
Modern
 combat is a war based on electronic technology.<br />
Whoever has the
advantage of electronic equipment can seize the electromagnetic power
and seize it. The dominance of battlefield information. In the case of
 one-way transparency, the enemy is attacked. The performance of the
electronic device is closely related to the material.<br />
<br />
For example, the
F-16 and F-22 use active phased array radar, but the materials are
completely different and the performance is very different. .<br />
The
material mentioned here refers to the semiconductor material, which
measures the main index power/mass ratio and reaction sensitivity of the
 semiconductor material. The former describes how much the device power
is at a certain quality, and the latter describes the device's working
state conversion and small signal detection capability.<br />
<br />
The US F-22 airborne radar AN/APG-77
uses a semiconductor based on gallium nitride, and its electron mobility
 and mass-to-power ratio are improved relative to conventional GaAs
radar, 5 to 10 times. This means that in the same radar and the same
quality, the target can be detected more than 1.5 times the opponent's
distance, which will inevitably bring great tactical advantages.<br />
<br />
A paper published by Professor
Xu Yuzhen entitled "Interfacial Solution Method for Synthesizing
Semiconductor Two-Dimensional Polymers" is very noteworthy, indicating
that China has the ability to prepare two-dimensional semiconductor
materials in the laboratory, and the power of this material will be
large. Amplitude improves the performance of electronic devices.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.bestchinanews.com/1ydzximg/0JhzCPyWca" /><br />
<br />
The
 so-called two-dimensional semiconductor is relatively three-dimensional
 semiconductor, this semiconductor is very thin, only one by thickness
The atomic composition of electrons in such semiconductors is very fast
compared to bulk three-dimensional semiconductors.<br />
This is because,
limited to the three-dimensional space environment, after the voltage is
 applied, although the electrons in the semiconductor partially move in a
 substantially certain direction, the whole will fly in a
three-dimensional space, and most of the motion energy is consumed. In a
 two-dimensional semiconductor, electrons cannot move to the third
dimension, which greatly increases the current. How much is this
performance increase?<br />
<br />
The conclusion of the National Nanoscience Center
 paper is that the power quality ratio is 1000 times! Reaction
sensitivity exceeds 6000 times!<br />
What does this mean? I will give you
the calculation of this account.<br />
<br />
The detection range of the
radar is proportional to the power of the fourth power of the
sensitivity. After using this material, the same volumetric radar will
be able to achieve 50 times the existing radar!<br />
Taking the F-22 as an
example, the RCS minimum value is 0.0001m2, which can reduce the
detection distance of the existing radar to the normal fighter by 13
times.<br />
An airborne radar capable of detecting 150 kilometers can only
find F-22 near 10 kilometers, but when the radar uses two-dimensional
 semiconductor materials, it can find the F-22 at 576km.<br />
<br />
Considering
that the stealth capability of the stealth aircraft is almost at the
limit, especially it is difficult to reduce the minimum value, so it can
 be said that once the species.<br />
When the radar is put into production,
the myth of the stealth plane can no longer be reproduced.<br />
<br />
 In addition,
 it should be noted that this new material has the advantages of
softness and plasticity. Under the influence of this feature, it is also
 possible to study the conformal radar antenna array that can be
attached to the surface of the aircraft. <br />
<img src="http://www.bestchinanews.com/1ydzximg/0JhzCPHB1Z" /><br />
<br />
Two-dimensional
 semiconductor materials generally have thermal stability, which makes
it possible to control by chemical methods, the general method It is a
chemical vapor phase transport method that first synthesizes a
semiconductor alloy block and then uses a mechanical lift-off method for
 preparation.<br />
<br />
In the case of dichalcogenide, the chemical vapor
transport method refers to placing a single component powder material
and a certain amount of transport reagent in a vacuum quartz tube, and
the quartz tube is placed in a certain amount.<br />
The temperature gradient
 of the reaction tube, and finally placed one end in a high temperature
environment, one end placed in a low temperature environment, in the low
 temperature area will grow alloy monomer ingots.<br />
By repeated
mechanical stripping, a two-dimensional disulfide material can be
produced on a substrate of about 30 nm, but this method is rough, time
consuming, and difficult to mass produce.<br />
 Later, scientists invented
physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.bestchinanews.com/1ydzximg/0JhzCPfbfa" /><br />
<br />
Physical
 vapor deposition refers to the direct evaporation of a single component
 powder source at high temperatures and the deposition of condensation
at low temperatures.  A single-layer two-dimensional semiconductor
material is obtained, and the temperature gradient in the deposition
zone is extremely critical. If the operation is normal, a
two-dimensional semiconductor film is finally obtained.<br />
 Chemical vapor
deposition refers to the use of an oxide and a material to be prepared
as a reaction source, which is volatilized at a specific high
temperature and undergoes a chemical reaction, and finally a film of a
two-dimensional semiconductor material is deposited in the vicinity of
the container.<br />
<br />
The research group of Professor Xu Yuzhen is to
improve the chemical vapor deposition method, using 1,4-trisonitrile to
synthesize nitrile trimerization at the interface between
dichloromethane and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.  Two-dimensional
containing triazine polymer, this two-dimensional polymer has excellent
dispersibility in organic solvents.<br />
<br />
This makes it possible to form a
flexible polymer film with a fixed size by simply filtering, and even
more magically, it can be suitably fabricated into a field effect
transistor device and directly used for various electronic semiconductor
 components.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.bestchinanews.com/1ydzximg/0JhzCPYtNW" /><br />
<br />
However, we should also see that the idea of developing this material
 is good, but it is still very practical. The road to the far is going.
  Two-dimensional semiconductor materials can only exist in a small part
 of the laboratory, which is costly, and there is currently no way to
solve the problem of large-scale manufacturing.<br />
<br />
If you can make a few
millimeters at a time, it is already at the top of the world. Moreover,
 the manufacture of a few millimeters has been to concentrate all the
human and material resources of the entire laboratory for a long time.<br />
However, two-dimensional semiconductor materials are the development
direction of future radar electronic systems, both China and the United
States are engaged, but now they are just in their infancy. <br />

   <span style="color: blue;"> <b>KJ-600 </b></span><a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2130247/why-americas-stealth-jet-forces-should-fear-chinas-new" target="_blank">first building carrier-borne early-warning plane.</a><br />
<br />
KJ-600 would be fitted an advanced active electronically scanned
array, or AESA, radar which could enable it to spot stealth aircraft
such as US F-22s and F-35s.<br />
<br />
Beijing-based military expert Li Jie said the new surveillance plane could also become a command centre in the air.<br />

“AESA can detect stealth fighters at a very long range,” Li said.<br />
<br />
US-based military website Eastern Arsenal reported last year that the
 KJ-600 was being built by Xi’an Aircraft Corporation, weighed 25-30
tonnes, was powered by twin turboprop engines, and had a large AESA
radar on its fuselage.<br />
<br />
AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, which emits
separate radio waves on different frequencies, on Navy ships. By rapidly
 changing frequencies, the radar is more difficult to fool. The system
are apparently capable of locating a stealth aircraft within 220 miles.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://ndupress.ndu.edu/portals/68/Documents/jfq/jfq-55.pdf" target="blank">“It is the physics of longer wavelength and resonance that enables VHF and UHF radar to detect stealth aircraft,”</a> Westra wrote in his article, titled “Radar vs. Stealth.”<br />
<br />
<a href="http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/northrop-grummans-e-2d-advanced-hawkeye-the-us-navys-eyes-18794?pUHF-band%20radars" target="blank">operate
 at frequencies between 300 MHz and one GHz, which results in
wavelengths that are between 10 centimeters and one meter long.</a>
Typically, due to the physical characteristics of fighter-sized stealth
aircraft, they must be optimized to defeat higher frequencies in the Ka,
 Ku, X, C and parts of the S-bands.<br />
<br />
There is a resonance effect that occurs when a feature on an
aircraft — such as a tail-fin tip — is less than eight times the size of
 a particular frequency wavelength. That omnidirectional resonance
effect produces a “step change” in an aircraft’s radar cross-section.<br />

Effectively, what that means is that small stealth aircraft that do
not have the size or weight allowances for two feet or more of radar
absorbent material coatings on every surface are forced to make trades
as to which frequency bands they are optimized for.<br />

<br />
Military analysts said photographs of the KJ-600 suggested it was
very similar to the E-2 Hawkeye, the US’ all-weather, carrier-capable
tactical airborne early-warning aircraft.<br />

Military analyst Zhou Chenming, also based in Beijing, said the
KJ-600 radar system would put the plane on a par with US early-warning
aircraft.<br />

“The biggest advantage of the KJ-600 is it’s equipped with a more
sophisticated radar and communication system allowing it to monitor a
wider range of signals and even detect stealth fighters in a certain
angle,” Zhou said.<br />

<a href="http://www.defenseworld.net/news/20792/Chinese_Scientists_Developing_Powerful_Radar_Device_To_Detect_Traces_Of_Stealth_Aircraft#.Wc4GHqjTTIU" target="_blank">Chinese scientists have reportedly</a> tested a new military radar device that can generate powerful terahertz radiation capable of tracking concealed weapons in a crowd from hundreds of metres away.<br />
<br />
According to a report by <a class="externalLink" href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2113113/china-powers-new-radar-tech-unmask-stealth-fighters" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">South China Morning Post</a>,
 China North Industries Group Corporation tested a device that produces
terahertz radiation last week at a military research facility in
Chengdu, Sichuan province.<br />
<br />
Terahertz radiation, or T-rays, can theoretically see through the
composite materials that help hide stealthy jets and is widely used in
industrial plants to spot product defects. The report says China’s
biggest arms manufacturer is currently developing more powerful version
of T-rays producing device to put on an early warning aircraft or
satellite to identify and track military aircraft, including the US’
F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters.<br />
<br />
Science and Technology Daily reported on Monday that this new device
could generate stable, continuous radiation at an average level up to 18
 watts, and terahertz pulses with peak power close to one megawatt, on
par with some military radars.<br />
<br />
“The radar-absorbent coatings on the F-35 will look as thin and
transparent as stockings if [the Chinese radar] is as powerful as they
claim,” a technical executive told the Post. The reported power of the
radars is “more than a million times higher” than other terahertz
machines — dubbed T-rays — that have tried to measure the physical
specifications of stealth coatings on F-35s, the executive added.<br />
<br />
The new instrument was developed by the China Academy of Engineering
Physics in Mianyang, the nation’s largest research institute for the
development and production of nuclear weapons. <br />

<br />
China has been marketing a number of advanced air defense radars capable
 of detecting stealth combat aircraft, such as the United States' F-22
and F-35, at the ongoing 52nd International Paris Air Show.<br />
<br />
China Electronics Technology Group Corp, one of the major defense
contractors of the Chinese military, has models of three large
anti-stealth aircraft radars on display at the show, which will run
until Sunday at Paris-Le Bourget Airport. It was the first time the
State-owned defense giant took part in the show, which is said to be the
 largest and most influential of its kind in the world.<br />
<br />
The three radar types - <a href="http://www.ecns.cn/2017/06-22/262499.shtml" target="_blank">YLC-8B, SLC-7 and SLC-12 </a>- all developed by the
company's Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology in Jiangsu
 province, integrate the traditional detection method of mechanical
scanning with two-dimensional active phased-array technology, making
them capable of detecting virtually any aerial target including stealth
fighters, unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and
rockets, according to CETC. The company said the radars can also guide
air defense missiles to their targets.<br />

The research institute is the country's largest developer of military
surveillance radars. Its products have been sold to more than 20 nations
 in North Africa, Southeast Asia and western Asia, said Ni Guoxin,
deputy director of the institute.<br />
<br />
"Exhibits from my institute have the cutting-edge technologies in this
field and represent China's overall capability in electronics," he said.
 "Only a handful of nations, such as the United States, France and
Israel, are able to develop such technologies and make advanced radars.
It's fair to say we are a leader in this field."<br />
<br />
Wang Hongzhe, a senior designer at the institute, said the three radars
work on different microwave bands, so if they were all deployed together
 they would form a massive surveillance network that no stealth aircraft
 would be able to sneak through.<br />
<br />
"They are fourth-generation air surveillance radars - the latest and
most advanced of their kind. Compared with the third-generation models,
they have stronger capabilities and larger fields of detection and can
detect more types of targets, even some low-orbiting satellites," he
said.<br />
<br />
Moreover, all of these radars are mounted on ground vehicles, which
enables them to be deployed in a rapid, flexible manner, Wang said.<br />

    Quantum radar technology experiment<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>How many quantum radars are there?</b> <br />
Dianke fourteen
recently on the official <b>WeChat </b>revealed that <i>the quantum radar
principle prototype has been developed which can detect hundreds of
kilometers</i>, successfully passed the acceptance of a same type of radar
prototype, first breakthrough hundred kilometers power, Chinese

of the world.<br />
<br />
<b>Where's the quantum radar technology?</b><br />
<br />
Quantum
radar technology can be used to detect and identify the traditional
radio frequency stealth platforms and weapon systems. It provides <i>a new
technical approach for accurate detection of stealthy targets.</i> Faced
with the new information war, quantum radar may become a revolutionary
technology, as the emergence of radio frequency stealth technology at
the end of the last century, quantum radar will develop into "RF stealth
 technology" nemesis.<br />

<br />In
 fact, even the world's most advanced stealth aircraft can not disappear
 without a trace in front of the radar, and once locked, it will be
difficult to escape anti-aircraft missile strikes. In addition, <i>the
quantum beam used by quantum radar is independent of the transmission
medium, so it can detect the target of deep-sea submarine freely.</i><br />
<br />
The
 advent of quantum radar has become the terminator of stealth
aircraft Chinese announced that it has mastered the quantum radar
manufacturing technology, let us more is heavy-hearted, once Chinese
quantum radar is put into use, the U.S. F-22, F-35, B-21 <i>stealth
aircraft and stealth submarines will have no place to hide</i>. Its destiny
can be imagined... .<br />

F-22 stealth fighters<br />
<br />
According
 to the American air force lieutenant general Arnold bunche, in order to
 ensure the air leading position, being developed by B-21 may be the
only option to change the current situation. Considering the increasing
number of advanced air defense systems in some countries, plans to set
up more than 165 B-21 aircraft fleets in order to meet the future combat
 needs.<br />
<br />
According to The Pentagon data, the B-21 bomber will be priced
at $550 million. That is to say, if the requirements for the formation
of 165 scale clusters are met, about 90000000000 dollars will be
invested. If China's quantum radar technology once applied, or may allow
 the U.S. air force to invest about 90000000000 US dollars to build
B-21 fleet useless.<br />

<div style="text-align: start;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
From
 the above report to the analysis above, China's first high precision
microwave photon radar is 30 times higher than that of similar
international radar resolution, only some large parts of the aircraft's
details respectively, the similar estimation of radar imaging is just a
dot.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
In high precision microwave photon
radar 14 can work all-weather and penetrating, after breaking through
the imaging accuracy, slow processing speed and poor real-time
difficulties, you can quickly identify the target of fine structure and
characteristics, which not only can be used in the real-time
identification of combat platform for small target also, it can provide
accurate environmental information for unmanned intelligent equipment. </div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
This means that <b>the radar has the ability to detect, track and lock
targets, or to solve the current radar can find F-22, F-35 and other
stealth fighters can not track the locking problem</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
At
 present, the world's so-called stealth aircraft are not microwave,
photon, radar stealth. As China's independent research and development
of J-20, American B-2, F-22, F-35, <i>the stealth aircraft, under the radar
 detection of microwave photonic real no hide, in the detection of
microwave photonic radar airspace, the most advanced stealth aircraft
are in the class of naked state.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<img src="http://www.bestchinanews.com/1ydzximg/0GbzMyp3o3" /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
The
 emergence of a new generation of radar, the era of the fifth generation
 fighter system may end early. The sixth generation will probably no
longer boast what stealth capabilities are, but it will speed up, and
hypersonic vehicles are coming. </div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
The United States X series hypersonic
vehicle research and development is still in the forefront of the world,
 China also has mysterious Wu-14 project, and recent news also revealed
that China hypersonic engine research and development success.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
The
 most sad reminder may be that Russia, the fifth generation fighter T-50
 has not yet delivered, the era of the five generation aircraft will
soon be faced with an end. Yes, there are two, five generation aircraft
in India may also have an impact, but it should not be big, immediately
announced the development of the sixth generation of fighters, for
India, there is no difficulty.</div>

<br />
AWACS KJ-500 has the high level of modernization than KJ-200, achieved a
full glass cockpit, a liquid crystal display a large area. The crew is
five, namely, the driver, copilot, air mechanic, navigator, messenger.
In fact, with the improvement of the modernization level, only two
people who are driving together operate the aircraft.<br />
<br />
However, the mode of operation of the aircraft is still the steering
wheel operation, and there is no advanced telex operating system, and
further improvements in space are limited. <br />
<br />
From abroad similar models, the internal core cabin should be a number
of vertical layout of the integrated display console, all types of
operators at least more than ten, and its advanced level is the world's
leading level. KJ-500 is currently the best performance of
China air equipment, the highest price of the AWACS, the performance of
active phased array radar equipment more than KJ-2000
radar.<br />
<br />
KJ-500 aircraft platform still using Y-9 transport aircraft plane. The maximum takeoff weight of 77 tons, with 4 turboprop engines, a
cruising speed of 550 km/hour, due to the installation of a radar
system, the flight speed of the resistance increases, some of the
decline, but this is not a fatal flaw for early warning machine.<br />
For
 the carrier platform, the most important is the endurance time, the
longer the natural time is the better. The load of Y-9 volume reached
 more than 20 tons, a range of 5000 kilometers or more, so its life time
 is expected to more than 10 hours longer than about KJ-2000.<br />
<br />
However, if the aircraft can be replaced with jet transport aircraft,
especially jet aircraft, the comprehensive performance of the warning
aircraft will be significantly improved. At the same time, disk type
active phased array radar cover can provide 360 degree corner detection
coverage, but the large radar is located in the fuselage above the cover
 of air resistance is very large, the flight performance of the aircraft
 and flight safety will have a great impact. Therefore, the future
development direction of AWACS is the use of conformal phased array
radar radome and fuselage.<br />

Saab’s Barracuda <i>Mobile Camouflage System (MCS)</i>, provides constant protection to vehicles when stationary, while on the move, and during combat operations.<br />
<br />
The MCS provides wheeled-vehicle and combat vehicle platforms with
multi-spectral signature management properties that enable the platform
to blend in with environmental surroundings. It significantly reduces
the probability of detection visually and by sensors such as Near
Infrared (NIR), Short-wave Infrared (SWIR), Long-wave Infrared (LWIR),
Mid-wave Infrared (MWIR) and radar. Each system is engineered to fit
like a second skin to the vehicle and not interfere with operations,

 U.S. Army´s 2nd Cavalry Regiment, stationed in Vilsek, Germany, is now
evaluating Saab’s Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System (MCS)</a> on their Stryker fighting vehicles. This is the first field evaluation of the MCS conducted by the U.S. Army, during its operational training in Hohenfels, Germany. This training and
 evaluation, conducted alongside other NATO Allies is in support of
Operation Atlantic Resolve and the Enhanced Forward Presence missions.<br />
<br />
“Mobile camouflage and signature management is more important now than
at any time in the last 15 years, especially in the European theatre.
The fact that our systems are now being evaluated by the U.S. Army in
Europe is a testament to Saab’s dedication to support the soldier and
continued cooperation with the U.S. military”, says Scott Caldwell,
director of marketing and sales at Saab business unit Barracuda. <br />
<br />
“Current efforts to support U.S. Army Europe with MCS are ongoing and
could eliminate field-improvised vehicle camouflage and negate the need
to re-paint vehicles to match operational environments. The general
feedback from U.S. Army soldiers was that the MCS successfully reduces
the overall signature of their vehicles, is very durable and easy to
use. They also stated they enjoyed working hand-in-hand with Saab to
develop a signature management system given it helps to increase
survivability”, says Scott Caldwell. <br />

<span style="font-size: small;">From left to right: <b>YLC-2A, JY-26 and JH-18</b>. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Note that CETC
labelled the centre radar JY-26, even though it is completely different
to the design shown in 2014.</span><br />
<br />
Although exhibited in public, data on the performance characteristics to
 back up the cutting-edge claims is less forthcoming. Anti-stealth
radars typically operate at frequencies below 1GHz, because
low-observable aircraft are designed
 to minimise their cross section to radars operating within radio
spectrum covered by the IEEE S, C, and X bands (broadly 2-12 GHz).<br />
<br />
At lower frequencies, radar reflections increase as the wavelength
becomes closer to the physical size of parts of the aircraft and also
resonances may be induced in parts of the airframe by the radar pulse,
increasing the aircraft's susceptibility to detection and tracking. <br />
<br />

The<b> JY-26 Skywatcher-U</b>, an active electronically scanned array (AESA)
 radar operating in the VHF/UHF frequencies, debuted at the Zhuhai Air
Show in 2014. Developed by the 14th Institute (Nanjing Research
Institute of Electronics Technology, or NRIET), the trailer-mounted
radar allegedly has a 500km detection range and can track 500 targets
simultaneously.<br />

Whilst in development in Shandong, operators claimed that it detected
 USAF F-22 fighters flying over South Korea. CETC states, ‘The radar is
designed to meet air defence needs for decades to come,’ and that it is
robust against jamming and electronic counter-countermeasures.<br />

Oddly, in Zhuhai this year CETC showed a completely different JY-26
radar design without the distinctive ‘bubble wrap’ transmit receive
modules seen in the 2014 example. It is unclear whether this change
relates to mislabelling, disinformation or redesign, but the
manufacturer stated the JY-26 was ‘developed to be a mainstay radar in a
 national air defence system for long-range surveillance and tactical
missile defence’.<br />
<br />
The <b>YLC-2A</b> is a solid-state, L-band, 3-D long-range surveillance
radar mounted on an 8x8 truck. CETC stated, ‘It can be used as a
national-level backbone intelligence radar providing comprehensive
information…’ It can also serve as a target indication radar for air
defence weapons.<br />
<br />

The truck-mounted <b>JH-18</b> is a multifunction 3-D low-altitude
surveillance radar dedicated to detecting air and sea surface targets.
It is a phased-array system that fills gaps left by more powerful
surveillance radars.<br />

<br /><br />
 <b>JY-27A</b> 3-D long-range surveillance/guidance radar. Operating in the
VHF band, it adopts 2-D electronic scanning in azimuth and elevation. It
 is active phased array system, and it is stated to be
resistant to jamming and with ‘high measurement accuracy’. The
trailer-mounted radar is in service and has been spotted in Shigatse,
Tibet, for example.
<br />
There are unverified claims that the radar can pick up hostile
stealth fighters at ranges of up to 500km. If these reports are
accurate, such Chinese radars could swiftly nullify the advantages of
stealth aircraft. The JY-27A is also designed to address the ballistic
missile threat. <br />
<br />
The Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology (NRIET) is at
the forefront of CETC's programme and produced two of the units on
display at the Zhuhai air show, the YLC-8B and SLC-7.<br />
<br />
While the <b>YLC-8B</b>, a 3-D surveillance radar that operates in the IEEE UHF band (300 Mhz-1 GHz), had already been exhibited at Zhuhai in 2014, the SLC-7 made its debut at the show this year.<br />The long-range, early-warning
YLC-8B is a UHF-band 3-D radar that appeared in Zhuhai two years ago. It
 utilises full coherent digital-pulse compression and moving target
detection technology.<br />
<br />
The <b>SLC-7</b> operates in the IEEE L-band (1-2 GHz). According to NRIET, it with digital scanning
in azimuth and elevation, as well as mechanical scanning in azimuth.<br />
This was the first time this radar had been shown to the public.<br />

It was ‘mainly for medium- and high-altitude, medium-
and long-range target surveillance and indication tasks’. It is said to
be able to detect stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and air-to-ground
munitions out to a range of 300-400km.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
 A CETC official was <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2041912/zhuhai-air-show-opens-j-20-stealth-fighter-likely-steal" target="_blank">quoted by the <em>South China Morning Post</em></a>,
 ‘The SLC-7 is the export model. We are going to target potential
clients such as Pakistan, Egypt, Iran and some Middle East countries
that see the USAF as their enemy. Of course, the same model used by the
PLAAF is much more advanced than the SLC-7.’<br />

<br />

The <b>JY-50</b> is a 2-D passive radar for air surveillance and early warning in critical areas.<br />
<br />

Yet another radar system was the <b>JY-50</b>, this being a 2-D passive
system. It was ‘mainly for air surveillance and early
warning in silence of vital and critical areas’. This truck-mounted
digital radar is claimed to have an ‘excellent stealth target detection
capability’.<br />

China Electronics Corporation (CEC) is another radar manufacturer.
The REL-4 is a long-range 3-D radar that operates in the L-band. This
mechanically scanned system is used for target guidance and air
surveillance. CEC said, ‘It can integrate and manage information from
several radars to complete data fusion and to form an area network.’<br />
<br />
CETC reported in September that the country’s first single-photon
quantum radar system could detect stealthy aircraft at a 100km range
using quantum entanglement.<br />
Such quantum-based radars mounted on vehicles or aircraft could
detect stealthy aircraft at long ranges . <br />
DARPA and Lockheed Martin are investing in
similar radar technologies.<br />

CETC is working with scientists at the University of Science and
Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui province, which has achieved many
breakthroughs in quantum physics, including developing the world’s first
 quantum satellite.<br />
<br />

With regional countries such as India, Japan and South Korea joining
the US in inducting stealth fighters in coming years, China’s radar
capabilities, whether hyped up or not, will give them pause for
thought.<br />

The exhibition of these radars at the Zhuhai Air Show also shows what
 technology is also available to export clients. <br />
