 The new 125mm cannon tech demonstrator received a public and high

speeches from top CNU officials and interested onlookers. The shell
cartridge on the left side of the table is over 1 meter in length.<br />

<u><b>125mm  SHELLS GO AT MACH 6</b></u><br />
<br />
While new tanks like the Russian Armata and Turkish Altay are taking the
 spotlight in the world of armored vehicles, China has a new tank gun
that might just beat them all. The 127th Ordinance Institute, of the
Central Northern University, handed over a new 125mm cannon to PLA
officers at a June 10, 2015 ceremony. The Institute claims that the new
multipurpose cannon will have the highest range, velocity and
penetration power of any 120mm/125mm cannon in the world. Where the
story gets more interesting is that by June 14, all references to the
new 125mm cannon had been scrubbed from the University's website, which
suggests an official desire for secrecy during tests.<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/125mm_multipurpose_cannon.jpg?itok=NwUksFlJ" height="369" src="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/125mm_multipurpose_cannon.jpg?itok=NwUksFlJ" width="640" /><br />
<b>A New Multipurpose Cannon</b> <i><span style="color: blue;">sy_wsh at lt.cjdby.net</span></i>
 The 127th Ordinance Research Institute's news 125mm tank cannon is the
world' largest, with a barrel length over 7.5 meters and highly powerful
 shells.<br />
<br />
The multipurpose cannon achieves its high performance through a high
length to caliber ratio of at least 60:1 (the longest tank gun in
service is the German 120mm cannon, which has a ratio of 55:1), and a
larger cartridge, that stores more propellant explosives. While the
multipurpose cannon is currently mounted on a towed carriage, several
characteristics suggest that it is intended in use for enclosed spaces
(IE tank turrets).<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/one_big_gun.jpg?itok=31xyfAbi" height="370" src="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/one_big_gun.jpg?itok=31xyfAbi" width="640" /><br />
<b>One Big Gun</b> <i><span style="color: blue;">sy_wsh at lt.cjdby.net</span></i>
 Looking at the staff preparing the gun (just for the handover
ceremony), it's going to require a very big and tall turret to take
advantage of the gun's full elevation capabilities (though the
production model may have a lower maximum angle of fire), larger than
those found on current Chinese tanks. Also note the fume extractor (the
smooth bulge on the midsection of the barrel) that siphons off poisonous
 fumes and other propellant byproducts to avoid poisoning any turret
crew.<br />
<br />
Located on the middle of the barrel is a bore evacuator that aids in the
 release of combusted explosive fumes, to prevent those toxic gases from
 accumulating inside an enclosed space, which would otherwise poison
crew members and foul the gun. The multipurpose cannon's recoil system
is installed onto the top of the towed carriage frame and top of the
cannon breech block, which is optimized for horizontal firing (anti-tank
 and direct fire) as opposed to high angle artillery fire.<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/125mm_handover_2.jpg?itok=2e8bFUNb" height="425" src="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/125mm_handover_2.jpg?itok=2e8bFUNb" width="640" /><br />
<b>Big Hopes</b> <i><span style="color: blue;">Hongjian via China Defense Forum</span></i>
 The text on the red banner held up by PLA soldiers reads ""Central
North University, 127th Ordnance Institute's Research Result (125mm
multi-purpose gun) Handover Ceremony". If the multipurpose cannon is a
success, then it will be an example of the Chinese defense industry
moving into partnership with academic and academically based partners.<br />
<br />
This multipurpose cannon reportedly has a muzzle velocity of 2,000m per
second for armored piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS)
rounds, whose discarding sabot concentrates the kinetic energy from
propellant into frontal area of the penetrator rod, which is the size of
 a half dollar coin. For comparison, current Chinese 125mm APFSDS have a
 1700m/s muzzle velocity, the German L55 has a muzzle velocity of
1,750m/s, and the US's M829A3 APFSDS round has a muzzle velocity of only
 1,555m (but uses a larger penetrator with increased mass to increase
imparted kinetic energy).<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/cannon_on_the_move.jpg?itok=HOgHBgTV" height="479" src="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/cannon_on_the_move.jpg?itok=HOgHBgTV" width="640" /><br />
<b>Cannon on the Move</b> <i><span style="color: blue;">Weibo</span></i>
 The 125mm multipurpose cannon tech demonstrator will be delivered to a
PLA testing and proving ground. If successful, it will likely arm the
next generation of Chinese main battle tanks, possibly just in time for
the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic.<br />
<br />
Just as importantly, the new tank cannon uses one piece ammunition, in
contrast to the 125mm two piece ammunition used by current Chinese tanks
 such as the ZTZ-99 and ZTZ-96. The autoloader on those tanks are
limited to two piece 125mm ammunition due to size restrictions, which in
 turn results in a smaller APFSDS rod with less kinetic energy. The new
one piece 125mm ammunition will allow for larger APFSDS rods, while
keeping the caliber to 125mm to save weight, as opposed to scaling up to
 a larger caliber, such as 140mm.<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/old_125mm_ammo.jpg?itok=ZYT4DMyJ" height="497" src="http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/old_125mm_ammo.jpg?itok=ZYT4DMyJ" width="640" /><br />
<b>The Old Stuff</b> <span style="color: blue;"><i>Hongjian via China Defense Forum</i></span>
 This older two piece APFSDS 125mm ammunition's rod has a length of
about 650mm, which makes it much smaller than the maximum 1200mm length
for the new 125mm, one piece APFSDS shell. Its smaller rod has less mass
 (thus impacting enemy armor with less kinetic energy) because the hull
mounted autoloaders of the ZTZ-99 and ZTZ-96 tanks are only large enough
 to handle smaller pieces of ammunition.<br />

The 125mm multipurpose cannon is likely to be mounted on a new future
Chinese tank, which will have to move its autoloader into the rear
turret bustle, compared to the hull mounted ZTZ-99 autoloader. The long
length of the multipurpose cannon may also mean that such future Chinese
 tanks would have limited maneuver room in tight urban spaces.<br />

<b>Recoil Hydraulics</b> <i><span style="color: blue;">sy_wsh at lt.cjdby.net</span></i>
 The recoil hydraulic tubes are positioned to so that they're attached
to the top of the breech block (where the shell is loaded) and the top
of the towed carriage mount. The optimizes reduction of recoil on the
horizontal plane when conducting direct fire at enemy tanks, but raising
 the cannon to a higher elevation to fire at aircraft could damage the
recoil system.<br />
<br />
The multipurpose cannon's high velocity gives it enough energy and range
 to theoretically take on anti-aircraft roles (similar to 127mm and
130mm dual purpose naval cannons), though size constraints in a tank
turret would likely limit its firing rate and elevation when targeting
high flying aircraft. More plausibly, the multipurpose cannon could
provide indirect fire support with cannon launched missiles and shells
for Chinese forces, such as distant, networked infantry units calling in
 strikes on enemy positions (though again turret size and recoil
mechanisms means that the claimed maximum 40km range is likely
theoretical).<br />
<br />
Much as China is making high profile investments into new generation
technologies like battlefield robots, drones, infantry exoskeletons and
smart missiles, its also making great improvements to current military
technology like tanks. The new tank cannon is yet another example of how
 Chinese forces (and any foreign sales clients) will be far better
equipped on any battlefield of the future.<br />

A new underwater navigator is currently being tested by the Russian
Navy. The device can work in depths of over 80 meters (262 feet)
for more than 7 hours, providing underwater navigation and communication
 between groups of frogmen. The special feature of the device is
biometric sensors that measure the heart and breathing rates of divers

A new underwater rescue kit has been designed to save the lives
of pilots who crash land in water. The rescue kit allows the pilot
to escape from a sinking aircraft from depths of over 30 meters (100
feet). The kit consists of an oxygen bottle that starts automatically

Advanced Imaging for Professional Results<br />
Inspire 2 offers powerful capabilities and is easy to operate. The
nimble new magnesium-aluminum alloy body increases stiffness while
lowering weight. It has a top speed of 67 mph and takes only 4 seconds
to accelerate to 50 mph. With the new dual battery system, flight time
is up to 27 minutes. A new forward-facing camera offers the pilot the
best flight view for operating the master controller, while the camera
operator receives a separate feed from the professional Zenmuse camera
mounted on the main gimbal. The Inspire 2 supports the brand-new Zenmuse
 X4S and X5S cameras and will support additional cameras in the future.<br />
<br />
An entirely new image processing system, called CineCore 2.0, is
embedded into the airframe, which allows processing large files faster
than ever before. Inspire 2 captures 5.2K video at 4.2 Gbps for Adobe
CinemaDNG RAW videos and leverages a newly-designed, fast CINESSD
storage for a smooth work experience. A variety of video compression
formats are supported by CineCore 2.0, including Adobe CinemaDNG, Apple
ProRes 422 HQ (5.2K, 4K) and ProRes 4444 XQ (4K), H.264, and H.265. When
 recording 4K video in H.264 and H.265, the birate is up to 100Mbps.<br />
<br />
Inspire 2 offers professional capability and control suitable for many
scenarios. With optional high-altitude propellers, Inspire 2 can reach a
 maximum service ceiling of 16,404 feet above sea level, and the
self-heating dual battery redundancy system maintains good performance
of the battery to -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Through an optimized mode,
Inspire 2 streams smooth video at the widely used 1080i50/720p60
broadcast standard. Enhanced Lightbridge video transmission makes
smoother HDMI video possible.<br />
<br />
<b>High Performance and Professional Reliability</b><br />
The dual-battery system ensures that if one battery fails during a
flight, the other will be able to provide power for a safe return to
home. Stereo vision sensors have been included on the front and bottom
of Inspire 2 for obstacle detection, and upward facing infrared sensors
on top of the aircraft add protection when flying in enclosed spaces.<br />
<br />
The redesigned propulsion system can safely carry Inspire 2 through
incredible vertical camera moves, climbing at almost 20 feet/second and
descending at almost 30 feet/second. Redundant systems provide
reliability for the IMU, barometer, electronic speed controller
communication and satellite navigation modules. The master and slave
controller range now extends to 328 feet and users can switch between
2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequencies to cut through any noise for greater
signal stability.<br />
<br />
<b>Creative Freedom</b><br />
Inspire 2's new intelligent flight modes expand DJI's computer vision
technology to safely fly routes that give creators new ways to capture
what they envision. Spotlight Pro Mode locks onto a subject during
flight while the aircraft flies freely in another direction – and
automatically rotates the aircraft to stay on the shot if the gimbal
reaches its rotational limit. The forward-facing camera offers TapFly,
which directs Inspire 2 to any point on the screen while avoiding
obstacles along the way. ActiveTrack recognizes common subjects such as
people, cars and animals, sending Inspire 2 to follow behind, lead in
front, circle above or track alongside while always flying forward,
ensuring the forward-facing obstacle sensing system keeps the aircraft
safe.<br />
<br />
<b>New Zenmuse Cameras</b><br />
DJI is enhancing the imaging potential of the Inspire 2 by expanding its
 line of interchangeable Zenmuse cameras, which are designed for aerial
imaging and communicate directly with the aircraft's gimbal and flight
controllers. For situations that require a balance between weight and
image quality, the new Zenmuse X4S has a 1-inch, 20-megapixel sensor
with 11.6 stops of dynamic range and a 24 mm equivalent focal length.
The Zenmuse X4S offers aperture control (f2.8-11) and a mechanical
shutter that cancels rolling shutter distortion . The new Zenmuse X5S
has a larger Micro Four Thirds sensor with 20.8 megapixels and an
incredible 12.8 stops of dynamic range. The Zenmuse X5S camera now
supports 8 lenses from wide angles to zooms. It shoots 20fps continuous
burst DNG RAW (20.8 MP). In the future, a handheld mount will be
available for the Zenmuse X4S and X5S cameras, bringing those cameras
down to the ground for more flexible filmmaking.<br />
<br />
<b>Professional Accessories to Enhance Performance</b><br />
A series of powerful DJI accessories will meet the needs of operators
under various filming conditions. DJI Focus, a battery charging station,
 DJI CINESSD, CINESSD station and other optional accessories are
available.<br />
<br />
An optional DJI Crystalsky high-brightness IPS monitor features an
ultra-bright screen that is clearly visible in direct sunlight and ideal
 for outdoor shooting. It comes in 5.5-inch and 7.85-inch sizes, with
the highest brightness up to 1000 cd/m2 and 2000 cd/m2 respectively, and
 its dedicated system reduces video transmission latency. Dual Micro-SD
Card slots within the screen make it easy to back up footage and can
also be used to transfer and play back files. It operates in extreme
temperature conditions from -4 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Phantom 4 Pro</span><br />
<br />
<br />
The Chinese drone maker DJI already has a commanding position in the
market for both consumer and commercial drones, but the company isn’t
slowing down. In fact, it seems to be pushing out new product faster
than ever, putting its foot on the throat of competitors already
struggling to keep up.<br />
<br />
Today DJI released the Phantom 4 Pro, an update to the Phantom 4 unit
which came out just eight months ago, in March of this year. The Pro
boasts a better camera, more advanced obstacle avoidance, greater
battery life, and additional intelligent flight modes. It puts some
space between the top of the Phantom line and the new Mavic Pro — a
cheaper, smaller drone DJI released in October which, at least on paper,
 was just as powerful as its larger cousin.<br />
<br />
<br />
The sensor package on the Phantom 4 Pro has also gotten a big upgrade.
Prior to this, the DJI Phantom 4 and Mavic Pro had obstacle avoidance,
but it only worked when you were flying forward. The Phantom 4 Pro has
sensors on all four sides, meaning the drone can see and avoid obstacles
 while moving in any direction. This allows you to follow a subject
autonomously while flying backwards or sideways. Thanks to the new
sensors, top speed while in obstacle avoidance mode has been bumped from
 22 miles per hour to 31 mph.<br />
<br />
Another big change with the Phantom 4 Pro is that you can buy a remote
with a built-in display. This was something competitors like 3D
Robotics, Yuneec, and GoPro had all done, but DJI had always paired its
drones with remotes that needed a mobile device for a screen. The new
remote is much brighter than your average smartphone, and offers the
perk of allowing you to fly without burning the battery on your primary
communications device.<br />
  <br />
DJI says battery life on the Phantom 4 Pro has increased a touch, from
25 minutes to 30. And it built in a bunch of new bells and whistles to
its intelligent flight modes. The new drone will fly autonomously
through much tighter spaces and more complex environments. And you can
have it navigate to waypoints simply by drawing a line on your map with a
 finger.<br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Professional Imaging</b><br />
Phantom 4 Pro offers a powerful imaging system for professional photo
and video creators as well as non-professionals who demand excellence
from the camera and platform they use to pursue their creative visions.
  The camera now packs a 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor, and almost 12 stops
 of dynamic range bring out levels of detail and low-light performance
unprecedented in a flying camera of this size. Its mechanical shutter
eliminates rolling shutter distortion in fast-moving scenes. Phantom 4
Pro can capture slow-motion 4K video up to 60 fps at a maximum bitrate
of 100 mbps . In addition, the Phantom 4 Pro offers H.265 video
compression, which substantially improves video quality at the same
bitrate.<br />
<br />
<b>Reliable with Enhanced FlightAutonomy System</b><br />
Phantom 4 Pro builds on DJI's original obstacle avoidance system with
FlightAutonomy – three sets of visual systems that build a 3D map of
obstacles in front, behind and below the aircraft, as well as infrared
sensing systems on both sides. FlightAutonomy can position, navigate and
 plan routes for Phantom 4 Pro, enabling it to avoid obstacles in a
sensing range up to 98 feet at front and rear, even in complex 3D
environments. When returning to home and tapping to initiate auto
takeoff or landing, the Landing Protection function is able to detect
and help avoid landing on uneven ground or water. Phantom 4 Pro has
high-performance battery technology that provides up to 30 minutes of
flight time. The Phantom 4 Pro flies at 31 mph in P mode with obstacle
avoidance in effect, and has a 45 mph top speed in sport mode.<br />
<br />
<b>Professional Control with New Remote Controller</b><br />
Phantom 4 Pro's revolutionary new compact remote controller comes with
an optional high luminance display, providing a clear and vivid live HD
view from the main camera as well as essential telemetry data, even in
direct sunlight. The aircraft will automatically choose between 2.4GHz
and 5.8GHz once powering on to gain a clear signal in areas with high
radio interference. The new controller has a built-in GPS, compass,
Micro-SD card slot and HDMI port.<br />
<br />
<b>Intelligent Flight </b><br />
New intelligent flight modes make Phantom 4 Pro the smartest flying
camera of its size, opening new vistas for creators, such as the new
Draw Mode that allows operators to draw lines on the controller display
and direct the Phantom 4 Pro to fly that route.<br />
<br />
ActiveTrack recognizes common subjects such as people and bikes, then
follows them from any angle while maintaining camera focus, and includes
 three new modes – New Circle, Profile and Spotlight.<br />
<br />
Narrow sensing enhances obstacle avoidance sensitivity so the aircraft
can fly through complex environments like narrow doorways. TapFly now
works backwards and comes with a new Free mode that allows a pilot to
set the direction of flight, turn the Phantom 4 Pro or tilt the gimbal
without changing the direction of flight. With the new AR Route feature,
 operators will be able to tell the flight route on the screen.<br />
<br />
As an additional safety feature, within a minute of losing GPS signal,
the aircraft will automatically return to the last connected position
and hover there precisely to wait for the pilot's command. With the
enhanced return to home function, the aircraft knows where it should be
going from up to 984 feet away and avoids obstacles along the route.<br />
<br />
<b>Price and Availability</b><br />

Android phones
come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but within, they all run the
 same basic operating system. That Android code includes settings that
let you tailor your smartphone to your needs. In this guide, <a href="https://www.popsci.com/" target="_blank">we collected</a> 24 lesser-known customizations for you to toy with.<br />

Before we start, a quick caveat: Although the same Android code runs
all of these phones, manufacturers often modify the operating system by
slapping a software skin on top. Our instructions specifically apply to
the current stock version Android, 8.0 Oreo, which you'll find on
Google's latest Pixel phones.
 However if you own a phone that runs a different version of Android,
you can still apply these settings—you just have to rummage around a
little more to find them.<br />

</div>
<div class="st-block markdown  text-left  ">
<h2 class="in-content-skip">
1. Increase font size</h2>
You don't have to squint and strain your eyes when viewing Android screens: Open the Settings app and choose <strong>Display</strong>, followed by <strong>Font size</strong>,
 to make adjustments. Drag the pointer along the slider to make changes,
 and check the preview window to see what the end result will look like.
 Once you set the Android font size, most apps will apply it.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
2. Make sure you can find your phone</h2>
Worried about losing your phone? To maximize your chances of
recovering a missing device, make sure to activate Android's built-in
tracking system: Open Settings, go to <strong>Security & location</strong>, and tap <strong>Find My Device</strong>. After that, if you should misplace your phone, head to <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="https://www.google.com/android/find" target="_blank">this page</a>
 in any browser and log in to your Google account. You'll be able to
view your handset's location on a map, among other options. For more
details, check out our guide to finding a lost phone.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
3. Tweak the Quick Settings panel</h2>
Drag two fingers down from the top of the screen, and you'll open
Android's Quick Settings panel, which provides immediate access to
settings such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and flashlight mode. These shortcuts
are useful, but you can make them even handier by customizing which ones
 show up and the order in which they appear. Open the panel, tap the pen
 icon on the lower left, and you'll be able to add shortcuts and drag
the icons into a new arrangement.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
4. Reduce data usage</h2>
Android includes a built-in system to limit how much data background
apps can gobble up (at least when you're not connected to Wi-Fi). This
mode will affect different apps in various ways—for example, in a
browser, images might not show up unless you tap on them. To switch on
this handy feature, open Settings and pick <strong>Network & internet</strong>, then <strong>Data usage</strong>, then <strong>Data Saver</strong>.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
5. Stop new apps from creating shortcuts</h2>
By default, when you install an app, it automatically appears as a
shortcut on one of your phone's home screens. This allows you to quickly
 launch a new app, but it can also clutter up your interface. To disable
 this default, perform a long press on any blank part of a home screen.
When a menu pops up, choose <strong>Home Settings</strong> and turn off the <strong>Add icon to Home screen</strong>
 option. Note: This setting used to appear in the Play Store app, but in
 Android 8.0 Oreo, you can now access it from any home screen.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
6. Rotate the home screens</h2>
Within an app, you can turn your phone to switch the view from
portrait to landscape or vice versa. But the home screen doesn't come
with the same default—you have to turn this option on. Return to the <strong>Home Settings</strong> screen discussed in the previous tip. Here, you can choose whether or not the home screens rotate with the phone by turning <strong>Allow Homescreen rotation</strong>
 on or off. Note: You won't be able to access this option (it will
appear grayed out) if you've locked the orientation of your phone. To
restore this ability, you must unlock your screen orientation: Open
Settings, go to <strong>Display</strong>, and change the <strong>Auto-rotate screen</strong> option.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
7. Project your phone on a bigger screen</h2>
Android now comes with built-in casting, so you can mirror the screen on any monitor or television equipped with a <a class="linkTargets-processed" href="https://www.popsci.com/advanced-chromecast-tricks">Chromecast device</a>. Although many apps have their own Chromecast buttons, you can also project any screen or app from the Settings. Just go to <strong>Connected devices</strong> and select <strong>Cast</strong>.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
8. Change app permissions</h2>
How much of your personal information can any individual app access?
You can see exactly which permissions an app has been granted by going
to Settings, tapping <strong>Apps & notifications</strong>, and picking an app (or hitting <strong>See all</strong> to view the full list). Then, to view and edit that app's access, tap <strong>Permissions</strong>. For example, you might allow an app to access your contact list but not your location.<br />

</div>
<div class="st-block markdown  text-left  ">
<h2 class="in-content-skip">
9. Control battery use</h2>
Android now optimizes apps so they won't drain the battery as much.
For example, your email app can still run in the background, checking
for updates, but it does so less frequently. However, you can exempt
certain apps if you want them to always run at full throttle. Open
Settings and tap <strong>Battery</strong>, then the menu button on the top right, then <strong>Battery optimization</strong>. Next, hit the <strong>Not optimized</strong> link, then <strong>All apps</strong>. Finally, select an app and pick the <strong>Don't optimize</strong> option.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
10. Wake your phone with your voice</h2>
You don't have to touch your phone to gain access to Google
Assistant. You just need to adjust your settings. Open the Google app,
tap the menu button (three horizontal lines on the bottom right), and
then hit <strong>Settings</strong> followed by <strong>Voice</strong>. Choose <strong>Voice Match</strong>,
 and then the phrase "OK Google" will work at any time, even when your
device is locked. In fact, you can use voice recognition to unlock your
phone this way.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
11. Free up more memory</h2>
If you're running Android 7.0 Nougat or later, you can take advantage
 of Smart Storage. If your device is struggling for free space, this
feature will automatically delete local copies of photos and videos that
 have safely been transferred to Google Photos. To enable it, open
Settings, tap <strong>Storage</strong>, and turn on the <strong>Smart Storage</strong> toggle switch.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
12. Adjust lock screen timing</h2>
Why bother reducing the time your phone takes to automatically lock
the screen? Less down time makes it less likely someone will swipe your
handset before it locks itself. This will also reduce battery drain,
because the screen will stay lit for a shorter period. From Settings,
head to <strong>Display</strong>, tap <strong>Advanced</strong>, and choose <strong>Sleep</strong>. Then you can pick a time-out period that works for you.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
13. Customize notifications from specific contacts</h2>
To help you instantly identify who's calling—and to decide whether or
 not to pick up—you can assign certain contacts unique ringtones. Your
default ringtone will remain the same—change it in Settings, under
Sound, via the <strong>Phone ringtone option</strong>. To change
notification settings for individuals, launch the Contacts app, tap on a
 contact name, open the menu (three dots on the top right), and choose <strong>Set ringtone</strong>. Then you can select a specific sound from a list.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
14. Change volume levels separately</h2>
You might not want to play your podcasts at the same volume as your
ringtone. To adjust those separately, launch Settings and open the <strong>Sound</strong>
 menu. Here, you'll find volume sliders for media, alarms, and
ringtones. You can also access individual volume settings by pressing
the physical volume button, which will make one slider appear on screen,
 and then tapping the down-pointing arrow to the right. This will open a
 drop-down menu where you can see all three volume sliders.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
15. Unlock your phone in your car</h2>
Once you're securely seated in your car, you might want your phone to
 unlock itself. This would let you open a map without entering a code,
and would allow any passengers to put on your favorite tunes. Android
can do this by recognizing your car stereo as a "trusted" Bluetooth
device, one that proves you're in possession of your phone. From
Settings, head to <strong>Security & location</strong>, then <strong>Smart Lock</strong>, then <strong>Trusted device</strong>. Finally, work through the simple setup process, and then your phone will unlock when it's in the presence of your car stereo.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
16. Turn on Wi-Fi automatically</h2>
Keeping your Wi-Fi off
 while you're out and about increases your phone's security and
preserves its battery. But in the presence of a strong, trusted Wi-Fi
network, one that you've used in the past, Android 8.0 Oreo can
automatically turn your phone's Wi-Fi back on. From Settings, tap <strong>Network & Internet</strong>, then <strong>Wi-Fi</strong>, then <strong>Wi-Fi preferences</strong>. Finally, turn on the <strong>Turn on Wi-Fi automatically</strong> toggle switch.<br />

</div>
<h2 class="in-content-skip">
17. Change notification priorities</h2>
Oreo also lets you prioritize different types of notifications from a
 given app. In Gmail, for example, you might choose to receive a noisy
alert for important emails and a less obtrusive one for regular updates.
 Open Settings, tap <strong>Apps & notifications</strong>, and pick a specific app or tap <strong>See all</strong> to view a full list. Different apps will offer different categories of alerts, so choose <strong>App notifications</strong> to view them and configure different sounds for each.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
18. Quickly switch between apps</h2>
Jumping immediately from app to app is not, strictly speaking, a
setting—but it still makes a very useful shortcut. A single tap on the
Overview button, which is the square icon in the navigation bar, brings
up a view of all your open apps as tabs. However, if you double-tap on
the button, you'll immediately jump from your current app to the one you
 were previously using.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
19. Change emoji mode</h2>
You can view emojis on the default <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin" target="_blank">Google keyboard</a>
 for Android by tapping on the emoji button to the left of the space
bar. But did you know you can pull up emojis with different skin colors
or genders by pressing and holding on an individual icon? This works on
most emojis depicting people or body parts, such as a thumbs up.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
20. Show emergency information</h2>
If someone should discover your phone after you've been in an
accident, having your key medical information show up on the lock screen
 could save your life. To do this, open Settings, choose <strong>Users & accounts</strong>, then tap <strong>Emergency information</strong>. You can provide details like allergies and organ donor status, as well as emergency contacts.<br />

<h2 class="in-content-skip">
21. Move the cursor more delicately</h2>
Using only your clumsy fingers, you probably have a hard time
highlighting specific sections of text. If you're using the default
Google keyboard, then this neat trick will make it easier to move the
text cursor just one or two characters at a time. Launch any app where
you can write and edit text, such as your SMS program, and tap in a text
 box to pull up the keyboard on screen. Then, instead of moving the
cursor within the text box itself, place your finger on the space bar.
Tap and drag left or right on the spacebar to move the text-editing
cursor in the same direction.<br />

22. Tweak the color range</h2>
A phone's "color gamut" controls the range of colors that you see on
screen—a wider gamut means colors will appear more vibrant, but also
less natural. You can adjust the gamut in Settings by going to <strong>Display</strong>, choosing <strong>Colors</strong>, and choosing <strong>Natural</strong>, <strong>Boosted</strong>, or <strong>Saturated</strong>.
 Depending on the make and model of your phone, you may see different
options listed here. Play around with them to find the color scheme that
 works best for you.<br />

23. Snooze notifications</h2>
To clear a cluttered notification menu, you can drag individual
alerts to the left, and they'll disappear. But what if you want to clear
 those distractions now, but revisit them later, when you have time to
deal with them properly? Snoozing notifications is a fantastically
useful feature only available on phones that run Android 8.0 Oreo. Drag
any notification to the right, and a clock icon will appear. Tap the
clock, and you can choose to snooze the alert for 15 minutes, 30
minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours. Once the time has expired, the notification
 reappears as if it's come through for the first time.<br />

24. Get help from Cortana</h2>
When it comes to various AI assistants, everyone has a favorite. If
you prefer Microsoft's digital helper to Google Assistant or Bixby, you
can install <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.cortana" target="_blank">Cortana for Android</a>. You can even make it the default app that appears when you hold down the Home button: Open Settings, go to <strong>Apps & notifications</strong>, and then tap <strong>Advanced</strong>, <strong>Default apps</strong>, <strong>Assist & voice input</strong>, and <strong>Assist app</strong>.<br />
