Building 50,000-ton amphibious warship” by Hong Kong military
commentator Liang Tianren.<br />
Liang says that he wrote a long article three years ago that
disclosed development of a 40,000-ton amphibious attack worship
or helicopter carrier. In November that year, Real Admiral Yin Zhuo
disclosed at CCTV that was developing a 40,000-ton amphibious
attack warship. Later in 2013, a official website revealed a
list of 18 kinds of equipment Navy is to develop during China’s
twelfth five-year plan (2011-2015), in which homegrown aircraft
carrier no. 001 is item 7 while 50,000-ton amphibious attack warship is
item 10.<br />
China has built three Type 071 landing platform dock with quite
strong landing capabilities, but they have the shortcomings of
insufficient fire power and command hardware and limited air support and
 cannot serve as the cores of Chinese fleets far away from shore. <br />
Has an urgent need for a large amphibious attack warship that
carries advanced VTOL aircrafts to dominate the air and helicopters and
landing crafts to send ground troops in to protect its investment.<br />
According to the article, 50,000 amphibious attack warship
will be 265 meters long and carry six fixed-wing aircrafts and four
large helicopters on its deck. It will be accompanied by two Zubr LCACs.<br />
Liang said that is developing stealth VTOL J-10 fighter jets.
The amphibious attack warship will carry 12 J-10s.<br />
It will, in addition, carry 10 to 20
helicopters of various types, drones and other New-concept flying
vehicles. As a result, it is comparable in capabilities to Britain’s
Queen Elizebeth aircraft carrier.<br />
Shanghai’s Jiangnan Changxing Shipyard is building such a warship
quickly section by section. It is expected that the sections will be
assembled into one warship to be launched next year the latest. The
shipyard will build 3 more such warships.<br />
The shipyard is, in addition, building a 12,000-ton large destroyer.
Shanghai is to build three more Type 071 large LDPs and conduct series
production of Type 052D destroyers. Due to such heavy workload, it will
not build any aircraft carrier.<br />

Type-055 Destroyer may be armed with an electromagnetic gun and laser weapon

It is said that the destroyer has a displacement of 12,000 tons, second only to DDG-1000 that the US is building.<br />

According to US media, 055 destroyer carries 128 anti-ship and
surface-to-ground cruise missiles and air defense missiles and may even
be armed with an electromagnetic gun and laser weapon. Such a large
warship is in fact a cruiser rather than a destroyer.<br />

In the US, a cruiser is the major defense warship of an aircraft
carrier battle group. In Soviet Union which has no aircraft carrier, a
cruiser is the core of a fleet.<br />

Some people may find it wield that there is so much speculation since
 no one knows whether the picture is true. However, Wuhan Shipyard does
have built and tested the upper structure of the destroyer. As such
construction and tests are usual procedures in building a new warship,
it’s natural that the picture has drawn much attention. <br />

Chinese military expert Yin Zhuo said in an interview with CCTV
(Chinese government’s major TV media) that he believed that there must
be great innovation in the destroyer by using digital complete electric
propulsion so that there will be enough electric power for laser weapons
 and electromagnetic gun.<br />

Judging by the model of the upper structure of Type 055 destroyer in
Wuhan, the destroyer is perhaps 180 meters long and 20 meters wide with a
 displacement exceeding 10,000 tons.<br />

Yin believes that the destroyer will serve as the core of a Chinese fleet before China has commissioned more aircraft carriers.<br />

<div class="graf--p" id="fa4c" name="fa4c">
The
 combination of a new submarine—and a stand for testing sea-based
ballistic missiles—could mean a number of things. First, North Korea
might be bluffing.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="09ed" name="09ed">
The
submarine could be a fake. A Potemkin warship put on display for
orbiting spy satellites. If so, this means Pyongyang wants to trick the
United States, South Korea and Japan into pouring resources to counter a
 so-called “boomer” the North has no intention of actually developing.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="e51a" name="e51a">
Although
 possible, this is unlikely. Sea-based missiles would be a useful asset
for the DPRK. Pyongyang may bluster and threaten to use nuclear weapons,
 but it’s never conducted such an elaborate disinformation campaign.</div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">When it comes to nuclear weapons and capabilities, North Korea doesn’t bluff.</span></b></blockquote>
<div class="graf--p" id="ae3a" name="ae3a">
Another possibility is that Pyongyang intends for the submarine to carry non-nuclear, <em class="markup--em markup--p-em">anti-ship</em> cruise missiles. Russian Kh-35 anti-ship missiles, similar to the American Harpoon missile, have <a class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" data-href="http://38north.org/2014/06/jlewis061714/" href="http://38north.org/2014/06/jlewis061714/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">recently appeared</a> in North Korean propaganda videos.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="cd81" name="cd81">
The
 problem with this theory is that building a whole new submarine around a
 new, non-nuclear missile system is an expensive way for the DPRK to
sink enemy ships. North Korea can—and has—done that with regular
torpedoes.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="8200" name="8200">
The third, and worst-case scenario is that the warship may be a test platform for a future ballistic missile submarine.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="c4fe" name="c4fe">
That’s the most likely scenario. Here’s why.</div>

 occasional threats to nuke America, Kim and the rest of the country’s

devastating response. A nuclear war will end the regime and almost

This makes North Korea’s nuclear arsenal—usually assessed at between four to seven devices—vital for <em class="markup--em markup--p-em">deterring</em> an American attack. If the U.S. invades to unseat the regime, as it did in Iraq, the regime will respond with nukes.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="f93c" name="f93c">
And that’s not the only threat the North wants to deter.</div>

Northern provocations such as the torpedo attack on the South Korean frigate <em class="markup--em markup--p-em">Cheonan—</em>which
 claimed the lives of 46 sailors—and the bombardment of Yeongpyeong
Island prompted Seoul to develop the Hyunmoo-3 conventionally-armed

 an unsubtle threat to conduct a so-called decapitation strike, killing

 putting nuclear missiles to sea, Kim would create his own life

"North Korea's capabilities of miniaturizing nuclear weapons
appear to have reached a significant level," the paper said. "North
Korea is presumed to have secured some 40 kilograms of weapons-grade
plutonium by reprocessing spent nuclear fuel roads multiple times, and
it is evaluated to have been working on the highly enriched uranium
program."<br />     Pyongyang has yet to demonstrate the
miniaturization capability, though officials and experts from South
Korea and the U.S. have said the communist country is believed to have
the technology to build nuclear-tipped missiles.<br />
   "We don't have
 any intelligence that North Korea completed the miniaturization. In
consideration of the fact that acquiring such technology takes around
two to seven years in general and eight years have passed since the
North conducted its first nuclear test, however, its capability for
small nuclear warheads would have reached a significant level," a
ministry official said, requesting anonymity.<br />
   In the paper,
South Korea also assessed that North Korea is "presumed to have
(missiles) capabilities that could threaten the U.S. mainland, having
fired off long-range missiles five times."<br />     The evaluation
was based upon the North's successful sending of a satellite into orbit
on an Unha-3 long-range rocket in December 2012, according to the
official, noting that its Taepodong-2 long-range rocket is believed to
have a range of 10,000 kilometers.<br />

But it’s a good question whether or not the KN-08 can fit on a warship
as small as the one sighted at Sinpo.</div>
<blockquote class="graf--pullquote pullquote" id="2a0a" name="2a0a">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">This means Pyongyang may need to make the missile smaller, the submarine bigger … or both.</span></b></blockquote>

The
 third problem is launch capability and submarine design. North Korea is
 trying to strap giant, nuclear-tipped missiles on a tiny 1,000-ton

Whether or not the North <em class="markup--em markup--p-em">can</em> transform such a vessel remains to be seen.</div>

Still,
 as numerous as these challenges are, none of them are insurmountable.
The U.S. first fielded a ballistic missile submarine in the late 1950s,
and even China was able to construct a similar warship in the late
1970s.</div>

North
 Korea is taking a huge gamble in attempting to build a nuclear missile
submarine. A county with an economy one third the size of Ethiopia’s, it
 has extremely limited funds and a large, aging military to maintain.</div>
<div class="graf--p" id="21da" name="21da">
As
 the project grows more complex, it will gobble up an increasing share
of resources. Even then, the project might not actually work. “An effort
 by Pyongyang to develop an operational, missile-carrying submarine
would be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor with no guarantee of
success,” Bermudez states.</div>

But credit where it’s due. The North has spotted a crack in South Korea’s defenses and is moving to exploit it.</div>

Photographs surface of ship-mounted electromagnetic weapon that could
one day supersede traditional explosives with greater power, speed, range and accuracy.  <br />
<br />
China is believed to be testing the world’s first ship-mounted rail gun,
 a technology that military experts say has the potential to fire shells
 with enough force to destroy a warship and precision to shoot down a
satellite.<br />
The controversial development comes as China seeks to transform its navy
 into a blue-water force capable of rivalling the United States and
projecting power far from home shores.<br />
Photographs of a rail gun mounted on a warship docked in Wuhan, Hubei
province, have surfaced on Chinese military websites in the last week,
indicating the People’s Liberation Army Navy is testing the
electromagnetic weapon and has been able to make it more compact.<br />

Rail guns fire shells using electromagnetic force rather than
traditional explosive propulsion systems. They are designed to fire the
projectiles with more accuracy and power and over a longer range, but
are also extremely expensive.<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="https://cdn3.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/02/06/b87fa562-0a53-11e8-a09e-8861893b1b1a_1320x770_214826.jpeg" src="https://cdn3.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/02/06/b87fa562-0a53-11e8-a09e-8861893b1b1a_1320x770_214826.jpeg" /><br />
<br />
The US has researched and tested rail guns for years, with prototypes
firing projectiles at up to 7,800km/hour over a 150km range. The cost of
 the projectiles was reportedly US$1 million per round.<br />
But the Chinese device appears to be the first mounted on a ship.<br />
The rail gun uses electromagnetic technology known as IEPS that state
media confirmed last year would power China’s first home-grown aircraft
carrier.<br />
The system was developed by a team headed by decorated PLA naval
engineer Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, who told state broadcaster CCTV in
July that his ultimate goal was to install weapons such as rail guns on
the carrier.<br />
<br />
China’s state-run <i>Science and Technology Daily</i> reported on Monday
 that the cutting-edge technology would be deployed on the Type-055, the
 country’s biggest guided-missile destroyer designed as part of future
aircraft carrier battle groups.<br />
But sources close to Chinese military told the <i>South China Morning Post</i> that the destroyer’s propulsion system and internal design were not suited for the rail gun.<br />
The gun in the photographs was installed on a Type-072 landing ship refitted to house the bulky electrical equipment.<br />
<br />
Song Zhongping, military commentator and former member of the PLA’s
Second Artillery Corps, said future generations of the destroyer could
be fitted with the weapon down the track.<br />
Song said China was closing the gap with the US and it was possible that
 China could eventually abandon explosives in favour of electromagnetic
systems.<br />
“China has spared no effort to catch up the US’ electromagnetic
technology, to turn the new technology into an all-purpose propulsion
system for wide use in ship-mounted weapons and maglev trains and even
to replace rockets to launch satellites into the space,” he said.<br />
“The leaked photos show China is now not only catching up to the US in
ship-borne rail gun technology, but may surpass the US in next five to
10 years. This is because the US needs more time to approve budgets
while China’s political system allows it to put more funding into
special projects.”<br />
<br />
The US Naval Institute reported last month that the US Navy scrapped
plans in 2016 to buy 2,000 rail gun projectiles but would continue to
monitor new technologies that could be incorporated into its existing
systems.<br />
<br />
<img alt="[IMG]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="https://cdn4.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/02/06/f34c9de4-0a53-11e8-a09e-8861893b1b1a_1320x770_214826.JPG" src="https://cdn4.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/images/methode/2018/02/06/f34c9de4-0a53-11e8-a09e-8861893b1b1a_1320x770_214826.JPG" /><br />Photographs surface of ship-mounted electromagnetic weapon that could
one day supersede traditional explosives with greater power, speed, range and accuracy   <br />
<br />
Beijing-based military analyst Zhou Chenming said the purchase stalled
because of the expensive technology’s low return on investment.<br />
“The US is hesitating because the cost of the new weapon’s development
is huge, while its practicability is debatable,” Zhou said.<br />
“Proponents argue that [rail guns] can hit targets several thousand
kilometres away guided by the space-based Global Positioning System. But
 [the US] air force can hit long-range targets easily by dropping cruise
 missiles from their stealth bombers or fighters, something that is much
 more cost-effective.”<br />
<br />
Military insiders said the high cost of and Ma’s involvement in the Chinese rail gun project also made it contentious.<br />
“The decision to develop the costly electromagnetic rail gun also
provoked debate because so far only Ma and his team are the only
electromagnetic experts developing it,” one insider said.<br />
“But Ma’s team has the backing of the leadership and that is also the
reason why the electromagnetic technology has been developed so fast in
China.”<br />
Last year Chinese President Xi Jinping awarded Ma, 57, the country’s highest military honour, the Order of August 1.<br />

AL-31 engines are likely to be swapped for more powerful Chinese WS-15
turbofans by 2019.<br />

Current version HJ-9 anti-tank missile with a range of 5,000 meters beyond the range of the gun of enemy tank. HJ-9 missile is not for beyond visual range (BVR) attack.<br />
<br />
In 2011,
China completed its research and development of HJ-10 BVR antitank
missile with range of 10 and 25 km.<br />
The missile is for hitting enemy
tank found by drone or satellite but as a tank moves quite fast, GPS
information cannot guide an antitank missile in hitting a tank beyond
visual range.<br />
The optical sensor in the warhead of HJ-10 missile sends back the
image of enemy tank back to its launch vehicle, where an operator guides
 the missile like a drone to hit the tank.<br />
<br />
The launch system of the missile weighs 150 kg and is installed on an
 armored vehicle.<br />
The missile is 185 cm long with a warhead of 43 kg. It
 is a powerful BVR weapon to hit enemy troops far away whether it has
tanks or not. <br />
China, in addition, is developing a warship version of HJ-10 so that
its warship will be able to destroy an enemy tank on land 25 km away
from it.<br />

As HJ-73 antitank missile is outdated due to exposure of the
missile operator, China has developed its new third-generation portable
antitank missile HJ-12 (Red Arrow-12).<br />
It is a fire-and-forget missile with infrared imaging guidance, which makes it expensive.<br />
Due to its soft launch system, it can be fired within buildings and
bunkers and allows its operator time to hide after firing as the missile
 leaves its launcher at a slow speed to avoid generating too much smoke
and flame and then gain speed with more smoke and flame to hit its
target.<br />
Though HJ-12 can pierce armor 1100 mm thick, but is designed to hit
the top of its target, the vulnerable point of a tank. Therefore, it can
 destroy such advanced main battle tank as M1A2 and T90S though it is a
light portable missile.<br />
It can also be used to hit targets other than tanks and armored vehicles<br />
