 from Chinese military issue websites indicate the Kongjing 500 (KJ-500)
 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft has started to 
enter service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).<br />
While images of the KJ-500 in the PLAAF paint scheme first appeared in 
late 2014, the first image of one with an official serial number 
(30471), confirming its service entry, did not appear until 18 March.<br />
<br />
First seen in early 2013, the KJ-500 is based on the Shaanxi Aircraft 
Corporation (SAC) Y-9 four-turboprop transport combined with a fixed 
phased-array radar developed by the Nanjing Research Institute of 
Electronic Technology (NRIET, or 14th Institute).<br />
<br />
Chinese internet sources suggest that while the KJ-500 is smaller in 
size, electronic advances enable its radar to be as capable as NRIET's 
fixed array for the KJ-2000 AEW&C system that is fitted to an 
Ilyushin Il-76 platform.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'arial';"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: 15px;"><i><b> In January 2013 Chinese television reported 
this radar could track 60 to 100 targets simultaneously out to 470 km.</b></i><br />
<br />
The KJ-500 radar's three arrays are apparently the same size and 
contained in a saucer-shaped dome with an apparent satellite 
communications antenna in the middle. Other imagery indicates SAC 
considered but rejected a teardrop-shaped dome that would have allowed 
for larger side-looking arrays. The KJ-500 also features two passive 
electronic intelligence arrays.</span><br />

system, which uses a linear phased-array radar that is strikingly

As China invests in its space warfare programme, its ability to target 
incoming ballistic missiles or enemy satellites becomes ever more 
potent. Richard D Fisher Jr and Sean O'Connor examine the programme and 
its growing capabilities.<br />
<br />
Interest in China's space programme is at an all-time high. In June, the
 secretive Chinese militarylinked hacker group Unit 61398 was accused by
 US security technology group Crowdstrike of systematically attacking 
the computer systems of US and European government partners in the space
 and satellite industry in order to steal information.<br />
<br />
This came just weeks after a tense stand-off between China and the 
United States, after US authorities charged five Chinese military 
officers from Unit 61398 with hacking into US firms to steal trade 
secrets. China summoned the US ambassador in Beijing and warned the 
affair would damage "mutual trust".<br />

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Historical precedents </span><br />
<br />
Taking place across two distinct historic phases, China's ambitions to 
conduct low earth orbit warfare have been intertwined with its ambitions
 to develop ballistic missile defence capabilities. The first phase 
began as a likely response to Soviet and US anti-ballistic missile (ABM)
 programmes; on 6 February 1964, then Chinese leader Mao Zedong ordered 
the country's chief strategic missile engineer Qian Xuesen to begin 
developing missile defence, later named Project 640.<br />
<br />
Project 640 saw the development of prototypes of the 80-kilometre range 
10-tonne two-stage FanJi1 (FJ-1: Counter Strike-1), which was 
successfully tested in September 1978. Prototype test models of a higher
 altitude FJ-2 also occurred, before it was cancelled in 1973, while 
development work on a more capable three-stage FJ-3, for anti-satellite 
(ASAT) missions, also took place.<br />
<br />
Although initial tests with associated large phased array radars 
(LPARs), ABM systems, and other components achieved varying degrees of 
success throughout the 1970s, Project 640 was cancelled by then leader 
Deng Xiaoping on 9 March 1980 for economic reasons.<br />
<br />
Almost a decade later, a second Chinese effort to develop an ASAT system
 began. Originally under the aegis of the research and 
development-focused 863 Programme for high-technology development, 
leadership is likely to have passed to the People's Liberation Army's 
(PLA) General Armaments Department (GAD) of the Central Military 
Commission (CMC), which controls China's space programme.<br />

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Defensive, offensive </span><br />
<br />
To support space-based intercepts, China has invested heavily in ground-
 and space-based sensors. Currently, China operates four identified LPAR
 installations, near Huian, Korla, Longgangzhen, and Shuangyashan, 
although the system designators are unknown. The Korla, Longgangzhen, 
and Shuangyashan LPARs employ slanted octagonal arrays to provide a 
greater field of view. Unlike the others, the Korla array is mounted on a
 turntable and supports several areas.<br />

LPARs support offensive and defensive capabilities, via their ASAT or 
ballistic missile early warning (BMEW) functions, respectively. They can
 also support the development of offensive systems, and space tracking 
is an additional possibility for the LPAR network.<br />
<br />
On the eastern coast, the Longgangzhen and Huian LPARs are situated to 
monitor the Taiwan Strait region, and depending on system capabilities, 
high-altitude activity as far afield as the Second Island Chain.<br />
Alternatively, with an over-the-horizon-surface wave network in place as
 well as emerging Radar Ocean Reconnaissance Satellite and 
ocean-monitoring capabilities, the Longgangzhen LPAR could represent a 
possible system designed to track outbound DF-21D anti-ship ballistic 
missiles, and provide them with midcourse guidance commands. Such a 
capability would increase the potency of China's assertion over vital 
shipping lanes, which it contests with several neighbours including the 
Philippines.<br />
<br />
The Huian LPAR may represent an electronic attack device rather than a 
true LPAR, as in June 2014 IHS Jane's reported on its potential role in 
directing electronic interference directed at Taiwan's BMEW capability, 
the Surveillance Radar Programme.<br />
<br />
In contrast with Project 640, the revived ASAT/ABM programme of the late
 1980s has stressed complementary development of ASAT and ABM 
technologies but with a likely emphasis on early fielding of ASAT 
weapons.<br />
<br />
ASAT and ABM technologies are similar in that dual-role systems may 
perform intercepts outside the atmosphere for both missions. 
Single-purpose ABM systems, however, are orientated towards different 
classes of threat systems and do not all possess this exoatmospheric 
capability. ABM systems tailored to intercept slower moving, 
shorter-range missile classes are designated as antitactical ballistic 
missile (ATBM) systems to denote their inability to engage faster 
moving, longer range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).<br />
<br />
Midcourse or terminal-phase ABM systems are designed to intercept 
ballistic missiles during midcourse flight while outside the atmosphere,
 or during the terminal phase following atmospheric re-entry in the 
vicinity of their target.<br />
<br />
Information on Chinese military capabilities is rarely published by 
official Chinese sources, and much comes from individuals on the Chinese
 internet. The famous Chinese blogger KKTT, who has a good track record 
of revealing many new details about Chinese strategic systems, notes 
that under the 863 Programme, the 863-409 sub-programme stressed missile
 interceptors, while the 863-805 subprogramme focused on sensors and a 
kinetic kill vehicle (KKV). One result has been the China Aerospace 
Science and Industry Corporation <b>(CASIC) 35-kg KKV, which forms the payload for the dual-role interceptor missile, designated "SC-19"</b> by the US Department of Defense.<br />

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Testing systems </span><br />
<br />
Currently only two countries have operational ABM systems: Russia and 
the US, with India pursuing the capability and China quickly closing the
 gap. ABM systems have the potential to alter the strategic balance as 
they could render an opposing country's attack capability redundant. If 
fewer missiles are likely to penetrate the missile shield, then 
opponents may be tempted to develop more destructive warheads or 
sophisticated counter measures.<br />

In addition to its 2007 ASAT mission, the SC-19 was used in <b>two confirmed anti-missile tests in 11 January 2010 and 27 January 2013</b>.
 In both tests the interceptor missile appears to have been launched 
from the Korla Missile Test Complex, with target missiles launched from 
Jiuquan Space Launch Centre.<br />
A later US Department of State cable published by Wikileaks described 
the 2010 test, noting that a CSS-X-11 ballistic missile launched from 
the Jiuquan Space Launch Centre was intercepted at approximately 240 km 
in altitude, suggesting an exoatmospheric midcourse intercept that 
"furthered Chinese ASAT and ballistic missile defence technologies". The
 January 2013 test appeared to mirror the 2010 test, although some have 
suggested that an ASAT system test also occurred on the same date.<br />
<br />
<b>The SC-19 is not the only system under development</b>. In September 2010, an <b>unsuccessful terminal phase test involved an HQ-9</b>
 air defence missile or one of its derivatives. A document published in 
2000 by CASIC describing solid-propellant engine development for various
 missile programmes gave the HQ-9B ATBM variant designation.<br />
<br />
The 64N6E-derived battle management radar for the HQ-9, identified in 
September 2013 by IHS Jane's , would increase ATBM search-and-track 
capabilities of the HQ-9B by introducing new search modes and a 
dedicated ATBM operating mode. Additionally, the US Department of 
Defense credits China with developing the <b>HQ-19 system, described by Chinese sources as equivalent to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ATBM system</b> deployed by the US.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, the 2000 CASIC document refers to the development of the <b>HQ-26, an ABM said to be similar to the US Raytheon SM-3, which demonstrated an ASAT interception on 21 February 2008</b>; and the <b>HQ-29, a suspected analogue to the PAC-3 Patriot missile system's Extended Range Intercept Technology ATBM</b>, which is intended to intercept shorter-range ballistic missiles with lower velocities.<br />
<br />
Chinese ABM development is on par with US efforts technologically, only 
lagging behind in deployment. China could meet or exceed US ABM 
deployment levels within the next decade, but ATBM deployment remains 
harder to evaluate without more information regarding ATBM capabilities 
built into Chinese surface-to air missile systems such as the HQ-9.<br />
<br />
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Laser weapons </span><br />
<br />
In addition to missiles, China has pursued laser weapon systems since 
the 1960s. Project 640 included a sub-programme designated Project 
640-3. According to a 1998 Defense International report, Project 640-3 
researched lasers in an ABM capacity and was overseen by the Shanghai 
Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics.<br />
<br />
After Project 640 was discontinued, laser weapons research continued, 
eventually falling under the 863 Programme. Research efforts regarding 
high-energy lasers increased in the 1980s, although a transition to an 
ASAT rather than an ABM system is likely as research efforts included 
free-electron lasers and chemical oxygen-iodine lasers, whose potential 
outputs would satisfy the requirements for an ASAT system.<br />
Laser systems can perform three functions: dazzling, blinding, or 
destruction. Most require precision and sophisticated deformable optics 
that minimise power loss due to atmospheric transit.<br />
<br />
Dazzling is commonly associated with imaging satellites: ASAT lasers 
target a satellite's sensor apparatus temporarily preventing normal 
operation. Blinding focuses energy onto a sensor or component to cause 
permanent damage, and destruction requires the most technologically 
advanced systems and the largest power outputs. Laser ranging to support
 other kill systems is also a possibility.<br />
<br />
On 28 September 2006, Defense News reported that China had fired a "high
 power laser at a US spy satellite" as a "test of the Chinese ability to
 blind the spacecraft". US officials downplayed suggestions that 
satellites had been damaged, with some analysts simply suggesting that 
the Chinese were simply laser "range finding". Despite this, the 
Department of Defense consistently claims that China is pursuing 
directed-energy weapons for the ASAT and/or ABM role in its annual 
reports to Congress.<br />

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Space combat platforms </span><br />
<br />
As well as these air- and ground-based platforms, China may also be 
developing co-orbital weapons. These "assassin" satellites would reside 
in orbit awaiting orders to attack other satellites. International 
oversight regarding the weaponisation of space is currently weak, with 
the Outer Space Treaty primarily focusing on the basing of nuclear 
weapons, or other forms of weapons of mass destruction, in space.<br />
<br />
In a 21 November 2009 report on PLAAF strategy development, Chinese 
academic Jiang Feng, of the China Strategy Institute, told Hong Kong 
newspaper Wen Wei Po that the PLAAF was developing "assassin satellites,
 laser interceptor satellites …[and]… a new model orbital bomber".<br />
<br />
A dual use co-orbital "assassin" or repair satellite was tested during 
the last week of September 2013. Following its launch on 20 July 2013, a
 satellite equipped with a space robotic arm - either the Shiyan-7 
(SY-7: Experiment-7) or the SJ-15 manoeuvred close to a third payload, 
the Chuangxin-3 (CX-3: Innovation-3), and then to a separate satellite, 
the Shijian-7. The robot-arm-equipped satellite probably made contact 
with one of the target satellites, demonstrating its "dual use" 
potential; the ability to manoeuvre and contact a satellite could be 
used to damage critical components.<br />
<br />
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Outlook <br />
</span><br />
The introduction of BMEW, ASAT, and ABM capabilities represents a 
significant change to Beijing's military capabilities. Despite the 
potential to negate US missile threats, few capabilities offer a 
substantial threat to US forces, and the largest impact will be felt 
regionally through the potential interference with Taiwanese BMEW 
systems, or the increasing Chinese assertion over shipping lanes.<br />
<br />
A limited ABM force is capable of protecting the industrial and 
population centres in eastern China from attack by longer-range Indian 
systems that are currently under development. If China is able to 
effectively negate the Indian missile threat, one regional impact may be
 that it feels emboldened to greater assist its own allies or Indian 
adversaries, such as Pakistan, in times of regional tension.<br />
<br />
Advances in Chinese ABM technology are unlikely to pose a significant 
threat to US or Russian ICBMs, although the deterrence environment is 
somewhat altered as a single ICBM or a limited strike involving a small 
number of weapons is no longer guaranteed success. Rather, a much larger
 engagement will be required.<br />
<br />
The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, signed in 201o, has limits of 
700 deployed missiles and bombers, meaning that such an engagement 
remains within Russian and US capabilities. A larger engagement, 
detected by Chinese BMEW LPARs, would probably signal the beginning of a
 major nuclear exchange. Dispersed and silo-based missile forces, likely
 on alert due to increased tensions, could be used in a 
launch-on-warning posture to ensure retaliation.<br />

<br />
<span style="text-decoration: underline;">DUAL-USE PLATFORMS</span><br />
<br />
China's future spaceplanes are historically rooted in military 
requirements dating back to the shortlived 863-204 programme, which 
proposed spaceplanes to meet China's initial manned space access 
requirements. Although quickly superseded by what would become the 
Shenzhou manned SLV, space plane development continued. First revealed 
in 2007, Russian sources have told IHS Jane's that China has tested its 
Shenlong small spaceplane. This was most likely a sub-orbital test in 
late 2011 or early 2012. Shenlong is similar in size to the US Boeing 
X-37B and could be developed into a slightly larger space plane that 
could carry passive or active military payloads.<br />

Y-8 / Y-9 Aircraft have 19 different versions of Special Purposes

Starting from the 1980s, based on a Chinese cargo plane Y-8 (a localized
 version of the Soviet An-12 production Shaanxi Aircraft Industry 
Corporation) and its radically improved version of Y-9 was created 19 
different versions of special aircraft, including 11 types of aircraft 
series "Gaoxin" (GX, 高新) for the Air Force and Air Force PLA Navy.<br />
 "Gaoxin" - a designation for the aircraft carriers of special electronic
 equipment, in this family include aircraft EW, AWACS, electronic 
intelligence, psychological warfare and basic patrol.<br />
Older types of 
patrol and other special aircraft, which were created in the 1980s - 
1990s, as well as the test platform used in the aviation industry, this 
designation does not carry.<br />
Also, refer to "Gaoxin" have no special 
plane on the basis of other platforms, such as AWACS aircraft KJ-2000 
and electronic reconnaissance aircraft based on the Tu-154 (Tu-154D).<br />

    The Chinese Naval Air Force gets its first operational Y-8Q heavy
 submarine hunting aircraft, after several years of flight testing.  
Painted in the standard PLANAF grey as opposed to the bright yellow 
primer seen on the pair of prototypes, the Y-8Q will likely show up all 
around East Asian waters after the Chinese flight crews learn how to 
fully exploit the limits of their new technology.<br />

China is making serious efforts to correct its longstanding 
deficiency in aerial Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), introducing the 
Shaanxi Y-8Q (also designated as the Y-8GX6) aircraft painted in the 
blue-gray People's Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF) colors into 
operation. Previously, two Y-8Q prototypes had been flying for the past 
several years as part of a rigorous testing and training regimen.  Until
 this month, China's only long-range aerial ASW capability came from 
three Harbin SH-5 seaplanes, which are nearly thirty years old.<br />

The Y-8Q is designed to overcome Chinese ASW deficiencies that would 
cripple Chinese naval and civilian maritime activity in war. Some of its
 technology, at least on the surface, compares favorably to the U.S. 
P-3C Orion and P-8 Poseidon, and the Japanese P-1. The Y-8Q's most 
distinctive feature is its seven-meter-long Magnetic Anomaly Detector 
(MAD) boom, which detects the magnetic signature of enemy submarines' 
metal hulls as the Y-8Q flies over them.  Since MAD performance 
correlates to size, and it's seven-meter MAD boom is arguably the 
largest of its kind among airplanes, the PLAN would have a fine weapon 
for hunting otherwise stealthy submarines.<br />

    The Y-8Q's MAD boom on its tail is possibly the largest one 
mounted on an aircraft.  The MAD is located on a boom in order to 
minimize electromagnetic interference from the Y-8Q itself, as the MAD 
detects any magnetic signatures from the metallic hulls of submarines 
lurking beneath the waves.<br />

The Y-8Q also has an electro-optical turret forward of its bomb bay, 
which has day, night and infrared cameras to hunt the heat signatures 
and wakes of small watercraft, unmanned vehicles, and submarines 
(especially snorkels and periscopes).  Right under cockpit is a large 
radome that, in addition to detecting submarine periscopes and wakes, 
can provide targeting data via satellite link to Chinese aircraft and 
warships when the Y-8Q finds enemy warships.  The Y-8Q can also drop a 
hundred sonobuoys to provide real time sonar coverage of seawater 
expanses.<br />

blanket sensor coverage over a patch of ocean the size of Rhode Island. 
Other Chinese ASW platforms, like the Z-18 helicopter, also carry these

The exact weapons capacity of the plane's internal bomb bay is not 
yet public, but one estimate is that the Y-8Q can carry probably over 10
 tons. (By comparison, the Y-8 transport carries 20 tons of cargo.)  
Likely weapons loadouts include torpedoes like the Yu-7, sea mines and 
anti-ship missiles.  The Y-8Q's large size and sensors could also allow 
it to be a command center for underwater unmanned vehicles (UUVs) like 
the Haiyan glider that would guard sectors of the ocean floor while the 
Y-8Q flies off elsewhere.<br />

    The Haiyan UUV is an underwater glider, which can dive under 
1,500m below the ocean surface, for up to 30 days.  These 70kg drones 
(or future militarized versions) could be deployed enmass by Y-8Qs to 
provide a quick but long-term sensor solution, in areas like the Taiwan 
Straits, against enemy submarines during war time.<br />

Since the Y-8Q is extending Anti-Access/Area Denial operations 
underwater, it is almost a given that China is going to invest in future
 ASW methods.  In the future, the Y-8Q may be equipped with more exotic 
technologies like LIDAR (which uses laser beams to penetrate water to 
detect objects), hard kill anti-torpedo systems, acoustic signals 
intelligence and radiation detection (identify radiation from nuclear 
reactors) that Chinese scientists are already beginning to research.<br />

    This long range anti-submarine rocket is a proposal by Poly 
Technologies, a Chinese industrial conglomerate, that was first unveiled
 in September 2014 at a South African arms show.  The ASW rocket uses a 
heavy WS series artillery rocket to fire a light torpedo (possibly a 
500kg Yu-7) over 100 km away at enemy submarines that have been detected
 by a sensor network.  A Y-8Q could act as a command center for Chinese 
UUVs and long range anti-submarine rockets to effectively deny large 
areas of water to enemy submarines without placing Chinese submarines or
 warships in danger.<br />

The Y-8Q will become a significant part of China's emerging ASW 
operations.  Its 5,000km range, wide sensor and weapon range and massive
 payload will exponentially increase Chinese security against enemy 
submarines off its coasts and into the East and South China Seas.  When 
combined with other ASW assets, such as underwater drones, missile 
launched torpedoes and sonar towing Type 056 corvettes and Type 54A Frigatte, it could make 
current and planned regional investment into submarines by China's 
neighbors more of a risky proposition.<br />

DWL002 Emitter Locating System (ELS) is a big evolutionary leap beyond 
the original Russian Tamara and improved Vera ELS systems.<br />
<br />
The key feature is the addition of a second receiver. This provides the DWL002 ELS with two important advantages.<br />
<br />
Firstly, a single DWL002 unit can use triangulation to pinpoint the 
exact location of an enemy aircraft. In contrast, a single Russian 
receiver can only identify the direction but not the precise location of
 an enemy aircraft.<br />
<br />
Secondly, DWL002 has two receivers that permit interferometry. 
Though this does not increase the range, the resolution/sensitivity is 
equivalent to a receiver that is almost the length of the mast.<br />
<br />
I have included two citations below to show that China has researched interferometry, including X-band radar.<br />

If two Chinese DWL002 are linked via tight wireless transmission or 
fiber-optic cables to create a super-interferometer, the resolution 
would be incredible. If multiple DWL002 are interconnected and the data 
is processed by computers, the result is an interferometer of 
unimaginable sensitivity.<br />

YLC-20 is
intended to detect, locate and identify:<br />

Stated band coverage is 380 MHz
to 12
GHz. Deployment time is claimed to be 1
hr, with all system components on 8x8 or 6x6 trucks. At the time of
writing no good quality imagery of production equipment was available
through open
sources. This limits current assessments of the system's capabilities.
It is likely that DTOA techniques are used for target acquisition and
coarse tracking, and DF techniques used for precision tracking, using
DTOA derived coordinates to cue an interferometric DF antenna.
Avaliable material does not state whether a heightfinding capability is
provided, if so this would likely be performed using interferometric
techniques with the DF subsystem. Once better quality imagery of the
antenna arrangement becomes available, a more precise definition of
capabilities and limitations will be possible.

<span style="font-size: 18px;">IT'S GOING TO HUNT STEALTH BOMBERS</span>  </b><br />

New images of testing materials have emerged of China's largest ever 
UAV, the secretive Divine Eagle. Compared to other Chinese aviation 
projects like the J-20 stealth fighter and Y-20 heavy transport 
aircraft, the lack of publicly available photos of the Divine Eagle 
suggests that like the American RQ-180, this giant drone is a strategic 
and sensitive asset. Given the presence of official diagrams and wind 
tunnel testing, the Divine Eagle is likely to be a real Chinese project,
 built by the "black project" division of the venerable Shenyang 
Aircraft Corporation. Reliable Internet sources also indicate that the 
Divine Eagle conducted its first flight in December 2014 or early 2015.<br />

 These computer simulations show the aerodynamic performance of the 
Divine Eagle, the bottom image shows its performance at Mach 0.8 speed, 
at a 25 km altitude (though the Divine Eagle may not be always operating
 at such flight parameters).<br />
<br />
The Divine Eagle has a very unique design, similar to the World War II 
U.S. P-38 Lightning fighter. It has a forward fuselage attached to twin 
booms, which are also attached to a large, inverted Pelican tail rear 
wing that houses the twin turbofan engines. Wind tunnel tests indicate 
that the Divine Eagle has been tested in simulated conditions of Mach 
0.8 speed and 25 km altitude, which would likely indicate its top speed 
and flight ceiling (the RQ-4 Global Hawk's flight ceiling is about 18 
km). Assuming that the satellite communications disk on the blueprint 
has a 1 meter diameter, the Divine Eagle would have a length of 25 
meters and a 50 meter wingspan. This would indicate that the Divine 
Eagle is likely to have a maximum takeoff weight of between 15-20 tons, 
which would make it one of the world's largest UAVs.<br />

 The 7 radars include a X/UHF AMTI Active Electronically Scanned Array 
(AESA) radar on the front, two X/UHF AMTI/SAR/GMTI AESA radars on the 
twin booms, two X/UHF AMTI AESA radars on either side of the engine 
nozzles, and two more radars on the end of the booms. AMTI and GMTI 
radars are used for tracking air and surface targets, respectively, 
while SAR is used to provide detailed imagines of ground targets like 
bases and infrastructure.<br />

 The JY-26 "Skywatch" AESA Radar, operates in the long wave band to 
detect stealth aircraft, which are often optimized against detection by 
shorter wavelenghts. The JY-26 is claimed to have a range of 500km and 
Chinese media claimed it detected F-22 Raptor fighters off the South 
Korean coast in mid 2014. The Divine Eagle is likely to have similar 
radar technology to detect stealth bomber and fighters at long range.<br />
<br />
The Divine Eagle design has seven radars that provide it with complete 
360 coverage, including a X/UHF AMTI Active Electronically Scanned Array
 (AESA) radar on the front, two X/UHF AMTI/SAR/GMTI AESA radars on the 
twin booms, two X/UHF AMTI AESA radars on either side of the engine 
nozzles, and two more radars on the end of the booms. Airborne Moving 
Target Indicator (AMTI) radar types are used to track airborne targets, 
like enemy fighters and cruise missiles. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) 
provides high resolution of slow moving ground vehicles and enemy bases.
 Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) radars are ideal for identifying 
and tracking ships, such as aircraft carriers. X/UHF band radars, which 
include the "F-22 killer" JY-26 that debuted at Zhuhai 2014, have raised
 concerns in the American military that they could track stealth 
aircraft like the F-35 fighter and B-2 bomber at long ranges.<br />

Compared to its stealthy American counterpart, the RQ-180, the Divine 
Eagle is designed more for operational reconnaissance rather than 
strategic intelligence, direct flights over denied territory. While it 
has a very stealthy design, the Divine Dragon's high flight ceiling 
means that enemy fighters would have difficulty engaging it, and its 
long range radar would allow it to stay away from air defenses like the 
AEGIS when guiding Chinese anti-ship missiles at carriers. The Divine 
Eagle's could datalink with Chinese SAMs on land and sea to shoot down 
low flying cruise missiles. The Divine Eagle would even have a role in 
striking down enemy A2/AD networks, by locating enemy surface to air 
missiles (SAM) launchers to be destroyed by Chinese smart bombs. At the 
same time, the Divine Eagle can locate enemy stealth bombers, fighters, 
drones and cruise missiles, and then summon Chinese fighters to defend 
the Mainland.<br />

 The Divine Eagle, in its initial design phase, underwent an analysis of
 potential airframe configurations. The consideration of a conic design,
 boxed wing and twin boom fuselage indicate that the General Armaments 
Department (the PLA's procurement arm) wanted a very high altitude UAV 
capable of long duration flights.<br />
<br />
That Chinese Internet censors are allowing Divine Eagle technical 
descriptions to proliferate online is notable. It could be a 
psychological response to U.S. interest in Third Offset systems like 
drone swarms and the Long Range Strike Bomber. The Divine Eagle's 
ability to protect large areas of Chinese airspace against stealth 
aircraft makes any air raid against China a much more dangerous and 
difficult task. In turn, the Divine Eagle's airborne surveillance 
capabilities would increase the lethality of Chinese offensives by 
improving the quality of targeting information about enemy warships, 
bunkers, airfields and missile launchers. Finally, just as American UAS 
are used in intelligence gathering and surveillance roles for everything
 from earthquake response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Divine 
Eagle would presents a great leap forward for Chinese expeditionary 
capabilities.<br />

Chinese state-owned defence equipment firm China Electronics Technology 
Group Corporation (CETC) revealed that it has entered into an agreement 
with Austrian light aircraft constructor Diamond Aircraft Industries 
GmbH to indigenously develop and manufacture special mission aircraft 
based on the DA42 Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP) for the domestic and 
export market. The collaboration was showcased at the 2014 Airshow exhibition held in Zhuhai from 11 to 16 November.<br />
<br />
According to CETC, its Chengdu-based Special Mission Aircraft System 
Engineering Co Ltd (CETC SMA) business unit will offer fully-equipped 
aircraft, as well as an extensive range of avionics and electronic 
mission systems to cater to specific customer requirements.<br />
<br />
The lightweight DA42 MPP Guardian - which has an overall length, height 
and wingspan of 8.7 m, 2.49 m, and 13.42 m respectively - is a multirole
 platform capable of operating from short runways with a minimum 
take-off and landing distance of 700 m and 570 m. It can accommodate 
four personnel - a pilot and up to three mission system operators - 
although seating can be reduced to two for additional payload capacity.<br />
<br />
CETC said it will be offering its DA42 MPP Guardian in at least four 
configurations. A maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) variant, called the 
Ocean Hawk, features a nose-mounted electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) 
sensor turret, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and an automatic 
identification system (AIS). The Scout, an electronic intelligence 
(ELINT) platform, can carry a mission payload comprising a digital 
direction finder, wideband radio and satellite monitoring receiver, as 
well as a signal analysis system with real-time data processing 
capabilities. The company will also produce the Trident Eye and Star of 
Aerial Surveying variants, which are designed for airborne environmental
 surveying and precision mapping missions.<br />

Speaking to IHS Jane's in Zhuhai, CETC deputy general manager and senior
 engineer Hong Yuning said the company will: "initially source some of 
its avionics and equipment from third-party suppliers", but asserted 
that it will be capable of producing the full range of mission systems 
"in the near future".<br />
<br />
IHS Jane's understands from Hong that the DA42 MPP Guardian will be 
manufactured at a new 60 km 2 purpose-built facility in Wuhu city - 
located in the eastern province of Anhui - by a newly established 
business unit called the CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacture Co Ltd. 
The new facility will also produce DV20E Katana two-seat light aircraft 
for civilian and government purposes.<br />
<br />
According to Hong, the new business unit was incorporated in December 2013 under a joint venture between the CETC and Wuhu city.<br />
<br />
"The new plant will be ready by 2015, and we expect production of the 
new aircraft to commence by 2016," he said. "We are also aiming to 
produce up to 400 aircraft annually."<br />
<br />
He also revealed that the company has also teamed up with Austrian 
aero-engine producer Austro Engine GmbH to produce a range of propulsion
 systems, including the 168 hp AE300 turboprop engines for the DA42 MPP 
Guardian, under licence at its Wuhu plant.<br />

 is a signals intelligence system detecting RF emitting targets beyond 
visual range. The system can be used as a single unit or a network of 
several sensors. According to the Chinese developers, it operates over a
 wide frequency range and delivers high location accuracy and powerful 
signal analysis capabilities. </div>
