Aircraft Company disclosed on 24 June 2009 that the project to produce 
the world's largest amphibious airplane "Jiaolong-600" had already been 
approved, and its research and development has officially started. 
"Jiaolong-600," a single-hull comprehensive rescue airplane with a 
four-turbine propeller, is similar in size to the Airbus A320. It will 
become the world's largest amphibious airplane. The airplane's maximum 
take-off weight is 60 tons. It can take off and land on both ground and 
water. </span></div>

 In the civil aviation sector, "Jiaolong-600" has a strong capacity to 
carry out various special tasks including emergency rescue, forest 
firefighting and sea surveillance, and therefore it has great market 
potential. The 'Dragon 600' will be used for tasks such as emergency 
rescue and fighting forest fires. It will be able to take off on land or
 water and is expected to hold about 3,000 gallons of water or up to 50 
passengers. Supposedly, it will be able to take off with waves up to 
three meters high. Its maximum speed will be about 348 mph and a range 
of of 3,200 miles. It will be a "scooper" and can be refilled in 20 
seconds while skimming along on the surface of a lake.<br />

 It is a replacement for the Shui Yung 5, the 30 year old aircraft, of 
which only five were actually built. Four of them were delivered to the 
PLA Navy in the North Sea Fleet. The fifth aircraft in that fleet was 
actually sent off to do other civilian tasks, like emergency rescue and 
firefighting. The Shui Yung 5 was a poorly performing aircraft - it was 
underpowered. The Beriev A-40, officially in development, and currently 
existing in the form of a couple of flying prototypes, has a take off 
weight over 85 tons. It is the largest amphibian in the world now.<br />

 Hu Haiyin, deputy general manager of the 
company, said that market research indicated a domestic market for 60 
such craft in the next 15 years.</span><br />

 <span style="color: black;">The aircraft can also be used for ocean area surveillance. The JL-600 
could perform rapid direct logistics and personnel support missions to 
distant South China Sea outposts that are usually surrounded by shallow 
waters. This requirement would increase should China expand number and 
size of its island outposts. The JL-600 could also perform long-range 
patrol, anti-submarine, anti-ship and mine-laying missions. </span></span></span><br />

On December 18, 2014, the 6th J-20 stealth fighter prototype took off 
from the Chengdu Aviation Corporation factory.  At six airframes, that 
makes the J-20 the most numerous non-American stealth fighter in the 
world (the Russian T-50 PAK-FA has only four airworthy examples, after 
an accident in June 2014 destroyed the fifth model).  So far, 2014 has 
seen the debut flights of four J-20 fighters (2011, 2012, 2013 and 
2015).<br />

    This fan made comparison shows the Tu-204 "769" airliner modified
 for use as the J-20's radar testbed, along with its American Boeing 757
 counterpart which tested the F-22A's radar.  The grey panels beneath 
769's cockpit could be smaller side and rear mounted radars for the 
J-20, to provide 360 degree coverage.  Like the F-22, the J-20 will have
 an AESA radar capable not only of detecting enemy radars and guiding 
missiles, but also it can jam enemy electronics, communications, as well
 as conduct intelligence gathering and processing.<br />

Fifth generation fighters are commonly accepted to have a stealthy 
airframe, an active electronically scanned radar, networked sensors and 
supercruise engines (supercruise engines provide enough velocity by 
themselves to reach supersonic speeds, without using fuel thirsty 
afterburners).  Currently, the J-20 uses an advanced version of the 
Russian Al-31F, which is unlikely to be fast enough to supercruise (to 
be fair, the F-35 doesn't supercruise either).<br />

    "2015" sits on a runway in Chengdu, China.  The fighter is 
expected to leave for further testing at the CFTE base in Xian, China, 
nearly a thousand miles away.  The main difference between "2015" and 
the earlier "2011" and "2012" seem to so far be the modified tail boom 
stingers, which likely house rear facing radar.<br />

2015 features slight improvements to the airframe, compared to 2011 and 
2012, with changed tail booms around the engine nozzles.  The changes to
 the stingers are likely to accommodate rearwards facing radar, similar 
to the secondary radar arrangements on the T-50 PAK-FA.  Having 
secondary radar arrays located on the rear and side will give a fighter 
360 degree radar coverage, allowing for greater situational awareness 
and the ability to shoot long ranged radar guided missiles against 
pursuing aircraft.  2013 and 2015 both have retractable inflight 
refueling probes located alongside the cockpit, to extend their 
operational range.<br />

    2015 made its first flight on December 19, 2014.  At this point 
in the J-20's development, the design is essentially fixed, though the 
AL-31 engines are likely to be swapped for more powerful WS-15 
turbofans by 2019.<br />

Coming less than three weeks after the fifth prototype, "2013", first 
flew on November 29, 2014, the rapid production of J-20 stealth fighters
 suggests that China's flagship fighter program is entering Low Rate 
Initial Production (LRIP). LRIP is the stage in the development of 
military platforms where the design is essentially frozen, thus allowing
 the manufacturing to begin gaining experience by producing small 
numbers of the finished design (the F-35 is currently on LRIP Batch 8). 
 The rapid production of four similar fighters within a year suggests 
that China has settled on the final design of the J-20, and it is likely
 that production of the first squadron could happen in 2015.  The first 
squadron of 20-24 fighters would be produced in 2015 and early 2016, 
going to the China Flight Test Evaluation Regiment to develop tactics 
for the J-20's advanced capabilities.  Assuming things go to schedule, 
the first J-20 squadron would be ready for combat in 2017.<br />

the Russian PAK-FA fighter, as well as the USMC F-35B and USAF F-35A.  
More importantly, the J-20 would make the PLAAF the first Asian air 
force to have a fifth generation fighter, definitively shifting the 
balance of indigenous Asian air superiority to China for the first time 
in history.  Future iterations of the J-20 would be equipped with the 
supercruise capable WS-15 turbofan engine, and possibly advanced
 systems like directed energy weapons (lasers) and networked UAVs.<br />

but it's actually for a peaceful purpose.  This Chinese astronomical 
laser in Mianyang is firing into the nightsky to support calibrating the
 International Thirty Meter Telescope.  This laser, using a sodium based
 gain medium, fired 90 kilometers into the atmosphere, within. an 
accuracy of two picometers.</div>

The $1 billion telescope is a highlight of international cooperation, 
with American, Canadian, Chinese, Indian and Japanese scientists all 
involved in its construction and operation.</div>

ranged laser, one of which was suspected of disrupting a U.S. spy 
satellite several years ago.<br />

The Mianyang laser's critical support role is to provide an accurate 
reference point in the sky during the telescope's construction.  This 
laser is certainly an example of Chinese contributions to space science 
that include space x-ray telescopes and lunar rovers.  However, its 
accuracy and power could theoretically be applied to military purposes, 
such as anti-satellite and missile defense purposes.</div>

Forces.  The bolt action for loading the 20mm smart grenade is located 
just behind the scope, which also contains a ballistic computer.<br />

ZH-05 integrated assault rifle has proliferated in PLA service. 
 The ZH-05 has already seen service with the Chinese Marines during 
anti-piracy patrols around the Gulf of Aden.  Since then, this 
futuristic assault rifle has been fielded with elite PLA units and 
special forces; the ultimate goal is apparently to give each marksman in
 a PLA infantry fireteam (two fireteams a squad) a ZH-05. </div>

    This February 2014 picture shows PLA personnel testing the ZH-05 
smart rifle (the rifles have been pixelated for security reasons).  
Notice helmet mounted cameras, which are likely to be linked to the 
ZH-05's scope and fire control computer.  While it is unlikely that 
every member of an infantry squad would get a ZH-05, the marksman in a 
four person fireteam would likely be equipped with one, to replace the 
QBZ-95 assault rifle with underslung grenade launcher.<br />

What makes the system so appealing is how it combines the rapid fire 
action of an assault rifle with a programmable, multipurpose 20mm 
grenade launcher. While the computerized targeting system, underslung 
assault rifle and the 20 mm “smart” grenade launcher gives the ZH-05 a 
passing resemblance the cancelled American XM-29 and South Korean K-11 
smart grenade launchers, it’s actually a whole different beast.  For 
starters, the ZH-05 weighs at about 5 kg, compared to the K-11, which 
weighs 7.2kg.  The ZH-05 uses a simple digital camera for targeting, 
though it would be a simple matter to switch in a night vision capable 
infrared scope.  A 5.8mm assault rifle is based off of the QBZ-03 
assault rifle, while the grenade launcher has a 700m range.</div>

features, including the laser rangefinder (the two lens built in between
 the grenade launcher barrel and scope), as well as the 5.8mm assault 
rifle/carbine, which would be used in closer ranged engagements.<br />

Using the laser rangefinder and digital sights, the operator programs 
the 20mm grenade to explode at a certain distance, such as airbursting 
over enemy foxholes. Unlike its magazine fed American and Korean 
doppelgangers, the ZH-05's lighter single shotgrenade launcher makes it 
easy to switch between mission specific ammunition during a firefight.  
That's the same idea behind the ubiquitous M203 grenade launcher slung 
under American M-16 rifles. More importantly, Chinese 20mm smart 
grenades are superior to their American and Korean counterparts, since 
the single purpose grenades have smaller electronics, and thus more 
payload space.  Currently, there are three 20mm grenades for the ZH-05; 
an anti-personnel airburst grenade, a shotgun style canister grenade and
 an anti-material impact grenade.  The canister grenade, which directs a
 spray of lethal pellets, has received praise from Chinese troops as a 
"long range shotgun".  The canister grenade could also be a nifty way to
 shoot down small enemy quadcopters and UAVs.</div>

itself is in the upper right of the case.  There are two scopes, one for
 daytime usage, and the other presumably a thermal or night vision scope
 for nighttime operations. The ZH-05's firing computer is built into the

The ZH-05's current success shows the ability of China's defense 
industry to develop innovative solutions to problem plagued high tech 
equipment.  While the XM-29 and K-11 have been plagued by high weights 
that make them expensive and difficult to carry, the 5kg ZH-05 weighs 
less than a 6.5kg M40 sniper rifle.</div>

including significant testing.  Changes made in development included 
changing the magazine feed grenade launcher to its innovative single 
shot iteration, as well as weight savings from using lighter polymers 
for the assault rifle casing.<br />

The ZH-05's simplicity, ease of use and flexibility could make it the 
AK-47 of smart rifles. At the very least, the ZH-05 could give Chinese 
soldiers the edge in future urban combat and special operations.
