<a href="http://www.popsci.com/china-stealth-fighter-new-engine" target="blank">There
 is a new online picture which shows that China has made progress on its
 domestically built engine for its J-20 stealth fighter.</a><br />
<br />
The engines are distinguished by their serrated afterburner nozzles and interior flaps for manipulating the exhaust flow.<br />
Once these new J-20s enter service, China will have comprehensively 
mastered the major parts of fighter technology, including radars, 
stealthy fuselage, missiles, computers, and engines. <br />
<br />
The WS-10X (possibly officially designated WS-10G or WS-10IPE) has 
sawtoothed serrations on the edges of its afterburning nozzles, like the
 F-35’s F119 engine. The sawtooth edges provide a gain in stealthiness, 
as they redirect radar waves away from the nozzles. The straight edges 
on non-stealthy engines like the current Russian supplied AL-31 engines 
are major contributors to the radar cross section of a fighter.<br />

<b>China’s new engine compared to Europe and American fighter jet engine</b><br />
<br />
The WS-10X is believed to provide about 14-15 tons of thrust. This 
may be enough power to allow the J-20 to engage in low supersonic 
supercruise at Mach 1-1.2 speeds. The Eurofighter Typhoon has a similar 
low supercruise capability, which means it can hit supersonic speeds 
without using fuel-thirsty afterburners.<br />
<br />
The current F135 engines generates 28,000 lbs of thrust normally, but
 produces over 43,000 lbs of thrust with the afterburner engaged. 
Although no service has issued a requirement for an upgraded engine, 
Pratt and Whitney is cooperating with the US Navy on a two-block 
improvement plan for the F135 engine. The goals of Block 1 are a 7-10% 
increase in thrust and a 5-7% lower fuel burn. Technology to better cool
 turbine blades is included in the plans, which would increase the 
longevity of the engine and substantially reduce maintenance costs. The 
goal of Block 2 is to work with the US Air Force’s Adaptive Engine 
Transition Program, with the intention of introducing technology for an 
engine rated at 45,000 lb of thrust, to be used in a sixth-generation 
fighter.<br />

China’s gains in engine connect to broader news in materials. The 
Chengdu Aerospace Superalloy Technology Company, a privately held 
corporation, made a major breakthrough in superalloy research.  CASTC, 
according to the Global Times and People’s Daily, is producing world 
class single crystal turbine blades from rhenium-nickel superalloys; 
adding rhenium to nickel increases the superalloy’s melting point, 
allowing for a hotter and more efficient engine.  High rhenium content 
superalloys are used in light weight, high thrust engines like the F-22 
Raptor’s F109 turbofan.  Previously, the development of Chinese engines 
like the WS-10 were delayed as they suffered from quality control issues
 regarding single crystal turbine blades.   <br />

<a href="http://news.ifeng.com/a/20160622/49214461_0.shtml" target="_blank">A report on June 22</a>, Professor Chen Guang’s success in developing an 
aircraft engine material much better than US best alloy for aircraft 
engine.<br />
<br />
It seems that the new alloy will allow an engine built with it to operate at 150-200 degrees celsius higher temperature. <br />
<br />
Chen has achieved the success through long-term research with 
the funding from Nanjing Polytechnic University and the state’s Program 
973.<br />
<br />
Prof. Chen’s achievement, Polysynthetic twinned TiAl (PST TiAl) 
single crystals for high-temperature applications, was published on the 
Internet at <a href="http://www.nature.com/nmat/journal/v15/n8/full/nmat4677.html" target="_blank">Natural Materials</a> on June 20.<br />

General Electric development of the Titanium alloy Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb 
(Alloy 4822) as a critical technology for the GEnx engine used in the 
Boeing 787.<br />
Alloy 4822 was hailed as a sensational success in the development of 
aircraft engine materials as it reduces the weight of an aircraft engine
 by 200 pounds, fuel consumption by 20% and discharge of NOx by 80% and 
significantly lowered engine noise.<br />

At room temperature, PST TiAl has high tensile ductility of 6.9%, 
yield strength of 708 MPa and tensile strength of 978 MPa, a wonderful 
combination of ductility and strength.<br />
<br />
What is more important for aircraft engine alloy, at the high 
temperature of 900℃ its yield and tensile strength is still as high as 
637MPa and it has wonderful creep resistance. Its minimum creep rate and
 lasting life are <a href="http://www.nature.com/articles/nmat4677.epdf?shared_access_token=xf4x1O7evy7hllqZgMXkBdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0M_PZh_tPhR4KvGgIaM2O8xYaOPsST-H6ZQHzSgjpYlHE16Bcymx4aK9QiHHfQ4GSSNyFEKZwoZ34gcy_Gr6uKoPKnuQqffMsx9FUvB8ECV5uuHwsef-gXOBo3sWNTdsDs%3D" target="_blank">better than Alloy 4822 by one to two magnitudes</a>.<br />
It is
 hopeful that the allow may be used above 900℃ much higher that the 
650~750℃ for Alloy 4822.<br />

Taihang engine really capable? Standing next to Taihang turbojet engine 
WS-10  Mr. Dong said that <b>WS-10 engine is now fully operational  and 
matured.</b><br />

WS-10 engine is Chinese Aviation Research Institute 606's product, 
Mr.Dong is exhibitor of China aviation research 606 institute, these 
days every day he stood in the hall, elaborate WS-10 engine story to 
professional and non professional vistors. Mr.Dong said, he graduated 
from Nanjing University majoring in Aeronautics & Astronautics and 
started to participate in the development of WS-10 engine since his 
graduation.<br />

WS10 pre-study started from year 1978,  project set up in year 1987. 
Mr.Dong said, <b>WS10 had been massively mounted on the J-10 B and J-11B 
fighters</b>.<br />
<br />
Online some articles reveal, Taihang engine outer culvert box, using  
the composite, which greatly reduce the weight, also improves the 
strength and the  ability of resistance to high temperature. Mr. Dong 
with a reporter standing besides Taihang engine, pointing to the black 
pitch appearance of the engine that said: ‘this is our unique 
characteristics,previously used here is steel or titanium alloy. Now 
with this newly developed composite material, which is much 
lighter/higher temperature resistance/higher strength’.<br />

Mr.Dong said <b>WS-10 thrust to weight ratio at about 8</b> (the ratio of thrust 
to weight refers to the Trust power per unitary weight). The fourth 
generation engines, are all around 8 TW ratio. He also revealed, several
 China aviation research insitutes now are jointly developing the 5th 
generation fighter turbojet engine with TW ratio 10. The Chinese 
military fans called it the  WS-15 峨眉 ,which fugures stealthy layout.<br />

The J-10B as a lightweight fighter capable of carrying nearly 8 tons of 
weapons and excellent mobility performance, all credit to having a 
strong China 'heart' of WS-10 series.<br />

The WS-10A so far has a good track record. With more than 100 J-11B 
being deployed and most PLAAF pilots being regularly trained around 200 
hours annually. So far there is no single accident being involved with 
the WS-10A.<br />
Its overhaul lifespan is well over 1000 hours, which means the whole lifespan is over 3000 hours.<br />
The only problem we are facing now is the production rate, since we still don't have enough skillful assembly workers.
