<br />
The project goes ahead, the 1st step will involve picking a foreign 
development partner, and the next step will involve choosing between 1 
of 2 competing designs. The C103 design’s conventional fighter layout 
would look somewhat like the F-35, while the C203 design follows the 
European approach and uses forward canards in a stealth-shaped airframe.
 It’s likely that the choice of their foreign development partner will 
determine the design choice pursued.<br />
<br />
<b>KF-X Block 1</b><br />
Either aircraft would be a twin-engine fighter weighing around 10.4 
tonnes, with stealth shaping. In order to keep ambitions within the 
bounds of realism, KFX Block 1 fighters would only have to meet the 
radar cross-section of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet or Eurofighter 
Typhoon. Sources have used figures of 0.1 – 1.0 square meters.<br />

Note that even this specification amounts to developing a plane similar 
to or more advanced than the JAS-39E/F Gripen, from a lower 
technological base, with less international help on key components, all 
for less development money than a more experienced firm needed to spend.
 South Korea’s own KIDA takes a similar view, questioning the country’s 
technical readiness for something this complicated, and noting an 
overall cost per aircraft that’s twice as much as similar imported 
fighters.<br />

<b>KF-X Block 2</b><br />
KFX Block 2 would add internal weapon bays. Present plans call for Block
 1 would be compatible with the bays, and hence upgradeable to Block 2 
status, but Block 1 planes wouldn’t begin with internal bays. The 
fighter’s size and twin-engine design offer added space compared to a 
plan like the Gripen, but this feature will still be a notable design 
challenge. Additional tolerance and coating improvements are envisioned 
to reduce stealth to the level of an F-117: about 0.025 square meters.<br />
<br /><b>
KF-X Block 3</b><br />
KFX Block 3 would aim for further stealth improvements to the level of the B-2 bomber or F-35.<br />
No timeline has been discussed for Block 2 and Block 3 improvements. At 
this stage of the program, any dates given would be wildly unreliable 
anyway.<br />

The ROK Agency for Defense Development says that if full-scale 
development begins in October 2014, the 1st KF-X Block 1 prototype 
flight wouldn’t take place until September 2020. Based on the history of
 other programs, the new plane would be hard pressed to enter service

"At this point, there is almost no difference between KF-X and IF-X shapes," says the official.<br />

Still, the South Korean and Indonesian examples are likely to be 
different. Previously, officials have said that a Block I configuration 
without stealth coatings and the ability to carry weapons internally 
will go to Indonesia. South Korea will have a Block II aircraft, with 
stealth coatings and weapons bays.<br />

Seoul will also develop indigenous capabilities in key areas where it 
failed to obtain export licences from the US, an early stumbling block 
for the programme. These include the jet's active electronically scanned
 array (AESA), which will be developed with Israeli assistance, infrared
 search & track (IRST), electro-optical targeting, and the 
aircraft's electronic warfare suite.<br />

The United States was naive to believe that the emergence of joint 
attack fighter planes would reduce opportunities for other fighters, but
 the fact is that more and more competitors, <br />
F-35 become dominant global
 demand for military aircraft farther and farther.<br />
<br />
But in recent 
years, countries around the world have renewed interest in fighter 
aircraft substitutes, many of which may not be able to invest in the 
five generation of American warplanes.<br />
<br />
According to <b>AvascentAnalytics</b> 
data, the total number of ongoing or potential competition fighter 
models, bombers and attack aircraft, a total of 54.<br />
There are 21 
competitors with only a certain strength, including 7 in Asia, 4 in the 
Americas, 8 in Europe, 2 in the Middle East and North africa.<br />
Overall, 
the total value of the aircraft development projects in these areas 
between 2011 and 2027 was $106 billion 700 million.<br />

<strong>Still mysterious American air force future bomber</strong><br />
Details
 of the American air force long-range strike bomber (known as the B 21 
bomber) are few and far between, but there is no doubt that the next ten
 years will have huge amounts of money to invest in the program.<br /><br />In
 October 2015, the air force awarded Northrop Grumman B-21 contract 
design. Most of the details of the plan are confidential, rarely 
disclosed details, but should progress more smoothly, Northrop recently 
quietly reached a milepost, end of the preliminary design review.<br />
<br />
<strong>Japan outlook for future technology</strong><br />More
 interesting work has taken place in Japan, where they are struggling to
 cope with China's fifth generation fighter aircraft and other advanced 
platforms in the region.<br />

"Earlier,
 F-2's programs were expensive, and they didn't get very good airplanes,
 but they did help technology innovation in the business sector," says 
Avascent, a market analyst at AaronLin.<br />
<br />
"The government has 
recognized the commercial value of the project and is now hoping that 
ATD-X (once X-2 is handed over to the government as MHI) serves as the 
fifth generation of technology platforms". The 2018 milestone is to 
determine whether Japan will acquire its fifth generation fighter 
through full domestic development, joint development with foreign 
partners or foreign "off the shelf" platforms.<br />
<br />
Of course, Japan's 
sixth generation fighter is another independent project, and is still in
 the conceptual stage. The sixth generation plan will draw some lessons 
from the fifth generation program, but, like other countries, Japan is 
still trying to figure out what defines the details of a sixth 
generation fighter.<br />
In accordance with Japan's defense ministry 
2010 project document, the concept of the sixth generation aircraft 
requires all the technology until about 2030-2050 years.<br />

Concerns are growing that the KF-X project to develop indigenous fighter
 jets may not go forward as scheduled due to the failure to receive four
 core technologies on F-35 stealth fighters from Lockheed Martin.<br />
<br />
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said that the 
nation will push for cooperation with other foreign firms or 
autonomously develop the technologies.<br />
<br />
However, a DAPA official said Thursday that this would consequently delay the 8.5 trillion won project, codenamed KF-X.<br />
<br />
Lawmakers on the National Assembly Defense Committee and defense 
watchers said the failure to receive the four would cause a rise in 
production costs as well, and a problem in interoperability with other 
equipment, which will be mainly based on American technology.<br />
<br />
The KF-X project calls for developing fighter jets of the F-16 plus 
class to replace an aging fleet of F-4s and F-5s by 2025. Some 120 jets 
are to be built.<br />
<br />
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) started the project in March with a 
plan to secure technological assistance from the U.S. defense giant. 
When the DAPA signed a 7.3 trillion won deal with Lockheed in September 
last year to purchase 40 F-35s, it said Korea would receive a total of 
25 F-35 related technologies under the offset program.<br />
<br />
In less than a year, however, the KF-X program encountered difficulties 
as the four ― the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, 
infrared search and track (IRST), electronic optics targeting pod 
(EOTGP) and RF jammer ― are at the heart of the jet development.<br />
<br />
"It depends on the performance of the radar, but developing an AESA 
radar will take 20 to 30 years if you currently have no technology about
 it," said a military official asking not to be named.<br />
<br />
Rep. Ahn Gyu-baek of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for 
Democracy (NPAD) noted, "Even if Korea develops the core technologies, 
there would be a compatibility problem with the U.S.," referring to the 
21 other technologies.<br />
<br />
Defense observers said a possible interoperability problem also applies 
if the nation receives the technologies from other foreign companies.<br />
<br />
They added even if Korea completes the development of the four, there 
remain further questions as to how to integrate them with aircraft.<br />
<br />
"Consequently, the failure to receive them from the U.S. could deal a 
setback to the KF-X project," said Hong Sung-pyo, KBS's defense news 
commentator. "How to secure the four technologies is a mission that 
absolutely needs to be addressed."<br />
<br />
Rep. Yoo Seong-min of the ruling Saenuri Party called the technology 
transfers to be included on the agenda of the Seoul-Washington summit or
 the two countries' defense ministers' talks.<br />
<br />
The DAPA official said, "We will utilize technologies accumulated while 
developing the KT-1, T-50 and KUH. We will prepare countermeasures to 
secure technologies that the U.S. refused to hand over."<br />
