<b>Chinese sources claim that the DWL002 passive radar system will render the F-22 and F-35 “obsolete.”</b><br />
According to <a class="externalLink" href="http://m.huanqiu.com/website/11353.html?cid=4" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">recent reports</span></a>
 in the Chinese media, China is betting that its new DWL002 passive 
detection radar system will grant its armed forces a massive boost in 
countering the United States’ advanced stealth fighters. According to a report in <i>Defense News</i>,
 Chinese sources claim that the radar will render systems like the 
advanced F-22 fighter and the upcoming F-35 “obsolete” — a strong claim 
to be sure.<br />
<br />
The DWL002 came to light in recent years and has been pitched by Chinese
 sources repeatedly as a credible counter to conventional stealth 
military aviation. The DWL002 is an emitter locating system (ELS) which 
partially iterates on innovations found in older Russian designs, 
including the KRTP Tamara series and ERA Vera-E. The DWL002 is a more 
advanced ELS compared to China’s YLC-20 system (which is itself based on
 the KRTP-91 Tamara). The United States and other Western European 
countries have abandoned the use and development of passive-detection 
radar systems, citing poor accuracy. China and Russia continue to use 
the systems. The DWL002 itself will have a likely range of around 
400-500 kilometers and is comprised of three stations that operate in 
tandem, placed kilometers apart. According to <i>Defense News</i>, the 
DWL002′s range would allow it “cover all of Taiwan and the disputed 
Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, but [it] is not within range of 
U.S. military bases on Okinawa. Nor can it reach the Philippines.”<br />
<br />
The DWL002, if it lives up to its touted capabilities, would severely 
hamper stealth fighter-based attempts at establishing aerial control 
over Chinese territory provided Chinese air defense systems are 
operational. Anti-stealth radar technology would play an important role 
in allowing the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to effectively 
counter parts of the United States AirSea Battle operational concept, 
for example. <a class="externalLink" href="http://defensetech.org/2010/05/18/csba-releases-its-airsea-battle-concept/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Part of the effectiveness of AirSea Battle</span></a>
 relies on the U.S. Air Force and Navy deploying long-range 
stealth-based air platforms. With the DWL002 ESL, Chinese air defense 
systems would be significantly more effective at detecting hostile 
stealth aircraft. Another feature of the DWL002 that has drawn some 
attention from the Chinese media — notably the <i>Global Times</i>, <i>according to WantChinaTimes </i>–
 is its ability to track aircraft without notifying pilots that they 
have been detected by radar. Furthermore, according toVassily Kashin, 
senior research fellow at the Center for Analysis of Strategies and 
Technologies, a Moscow-based think tank, the DWL002′s capabilities are 
not being exaggerated and pose a serious threat to stealth platforms.<br />
<br />
Other sources are less convinced of the DWL002′s actual capabilities. According to <i>a technical report by Air Power Australia</i>,
 an independent defense think tank, the key innovation that sets the 
DWL002 apart from its other ELS predecessors is its use of “paired 
primary wideband apertures, displaced in elevation.” Based on the 
report, this seems to be extent of the DWL002′s capacity to impress. 
That report further emphasizes the DWL002′s height-finding capabilities 
more so than its explicit anti-stealth capabilities. The Air Power 
Australia report is widely skeptical of claims that the DWL002 and other
 variants on Soviet-era passive detection systems are technically 
capable of what is often touted, i.e. China hasn’t “solved” anti-stealth
 just yet. In general, however, passive detection radar systems will 
likely benefit from the increasingly signal-heavy nature of U.S. 
military aviation technologies — the systems work by constantly 
listening for and detecting electronic emissions. U.S. fighters — 
especially the upcoming F-35 — could have incoming and outgoing signal 
traffic detected by this system (although the more data-heavy Multi 
Function Advanced Datalink runs only when the aircraft is in <a class="externalLink" href="http://www.lockheedmartin.com/us/news/features/2014/f35-new-era-of-international-cooperation.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">low observable stealth mode</span></a>).<br />
<br />
Overall, the DWL002 is likely less of a threat to contemporary U.S. 
stealth aviation than recent reports would suggest. In the meantime, it 
should be noted that China isn’t putting all its eggs in the 
anti-stealth technology basket. In addition to defensive investments in 
anti-stealth, China has long been proactive about developing its own 
stealth aircraft. Recently, <a class="externalLink" href="http://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2014/10/01/is_china_sending_a_stealth_fighter_to_sea_107472.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">a full-scale model of China’s Shenyang J-31 stealth multirole fighter</span></a>
 appeared on a PLAN carrier mock-up, prompting speculation that China is
 looking to deploy its own stealth jets at sea. Additionally, the 
Chengdu-20, a stealth air superiority fighter, is also under development
 and is expected to be operational later this decade.<br />

<b>Type 032 submarine</b> (NATO code name <i>Qing</i> class) is a class 
of diesel-electric submarine currently undergoing testing in China's 
People's Liberation Army Navy. It is said to be the world's largest 
conventional submarine, at a submerged displacement of 6628 tons and is 
able to submerge for a maximum of 30 days. The Type 032 has a similar 
ventral "bay" to the Golf class submarine that protrudes downward.<br />
The submarine is a testbed for new technologies such as combustion 
powered torpedoes, compartments for special forces, underwater unmanned 
vehicles, <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">new SLBMs</a>, <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">new cruise missiles</a>, <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">new anti ship missiles</a>, new SAMs, and a new escape pod which are applied to the<a class="externalLink" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Type 095</a> and <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.blogger.com/null" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Type 096</a> submarines.

Hong Kong military commentator Leung Guo-liang says China's airborne 
early warning and control system is the world's most advanced radar 
system, according to Hong Kong's Ming Pao.<br />
<br />
Leung, deputy editor of Hong Kong's China-leaning magazine the Mirror, 
said the radar's role in large-scale air battles has become increasingly
 important for coordinating aircraft.<br />
<br />
Wang Xiaomo, one of the developers behind China's airborne early warning
 and control system, said the country has achieved nine breakthroughs in
 the development of the system that put it ahead of the United States. 
China's KJ-2000 early warning and control system is a multi-functional 
and sophisticated radar that has the longest and widest range in the 
world, Wang said.<br />

The Washington-based Jamestown Foundation was cited as saying China's 
early warning and control system with its Active Phased Array Radar is 
one generation ahead of the Boeing E-3C Sentry of the US, the most 
advanced of its kind in the US, with its rotating radar dome.<br />
<br />
Although the US development of Passive Phased Array Radar has matured 
and been used on Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, China has been focusing
 on developing the more advance Active Phased Array Radar from the 
beginning and sought to take advantage of its earlier entry to the 
sector.<br />
<br />
The state-run China News Service admitted that the Active Phased Array 
Radar has already been installed on the American fifth-generation F-22 
stealth fighter jet, but said that it does not qualify as an airborne 
early warning and control system, because the aircraft which houses it 
is too fragile for purpose. The KJ-2000 plane may not be able to monitor
 400 targets and guides attacks to 100 of them like the Boeing E-3C but 
the Chinese aircraft has updated its electronics.<br />
<br />
The KJ-2000 was a Russian-made military transport plane and is able to 
land on battle grounds, however, the US aircraft was remodeled from a 
passenger airplane. It has a more fragile body which can be affected by 
poor weather and can only carry out missions outside of battle grounds, 
which limits its early-warning and control capabilities.<br />
<br />
Wang has been exploring the possibilities of giving all Chinese 
early-warning and control systems the capability to detect the US F-22 
stealth fighter jet.<br />

China’s military has conducted the first flight test of a new variant of
 one of its road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles in a sign 
that Beijing is increasing its strategic strike capability against the 
United States.<br />
The test of a new DF-31B missile was conducted Sept. 25 from a missile test range in central China.<br />
A Pentagon spokeswoman declined to provide details of the test.<br />
“We continue to monitor China’s military modernization, including its 
missile tests,” Cynthia O. Smith, the spokeswoman, told the<i>Washington Free Beacon</i>.<br />
No details of the missile test could be learned, but the test was 
believed to have been carried out from China’s Wuzhai test facility.<br />
Nongovernment military analysts said the new missile likely is an 
increased-range or improved performance weapon, and possibly a 
multi-warhead version of the ICBM.<br />
A Chinese military enthusiast website has identified the DF-31B as a 
mobile missile variant designed specifically for travel on rugged 
terrain or other difficult road conditions.<br />
Mobile missiles are considered a greater strategic threat because 
tracking their location and targeting them in a conflict is very 
difficult. The missiles can be hidden in garages or caves to avoid 
detection by satellites and other sensors.<br />
China has made clear in its state-run media that its nuclear forces are 
being developed for use against the United States. The Global Times 
reported Oct. 28 that a submarine-launched missile attack on the United 
States would kill between 5 million and 12 million Americans.<br />
The new DF-31B is the latest addition to China’s rapidly growing nuclear
 missile arsenal that includes older silo-based missiles and five other 
road-mobile missiles. They include the long-range DF-31, DF-31A and 
DF-41 ICBMs, intermediate-range DF-26Cs, and medium-range DF-21s—a 
missile the Chinese have developed into a dual, nuclear-conventional 
weapon that includes an anti-ship variant. A DF-21 variant also is 
believed to be used as China’s anti-satellite missile system.<br />
China has some 40 DF-31s and DF-31As, and the DF-41, which is expected 
to carry multiple-nuclear warheads, is said to be near deployment.<br />
China also has deployed new submarine-launched missiles called the JL-2 
that are based on new missile-firing nuclear-powered submarines that the
 U.S. Navy has said will begin their first sea patrols this year.<br />
China also is working a high-technology hypersonic strike vehicle that 
is launched atop a missile and travels at extremely high speeds along 
the edge of the earth’s atmosphere. The glide vehicle is being designed 
to deliver a nuclear warhead through U.S. strategic missile defenses.<br />
“They have an extraordinary selection of cruise missiles, and a 
ballistic missile force that they developed,” Adm. Jonathan Greenert, 
chief of Naval Operations, told a security forum in August, adding that 
in a future conflict, China’s missiles pose the most serious threat.<br />
“If [a conflict is] in their backyard, I’m a little worried about their 
ballistic missile [force] because of its reach,” Greenert said.<br />
China in late July conducted a flight test of a DF-31A, the fourth known flight test of that new missile in the past two years.<br />
The latest missile test, which was not announced by the Chinese 
government, highlights Beijing’s largely secret strategic nuclear forces
 buildup.<br />
Rick Fisher, an analyst who closely monitors the Chinese military, said 
the testing of a new DF-31 variant should be a worry for U.S. security 
officials.<br />
“The emergence of a third version of the DF-31 raises the question of 
whether there is a multiple warhead version,” said Fisher, with the 
International Assessment and Strategy Center.<br />
Fisher said the DF-31B also might be a silo-based missile or one 
designed specifically for China’s so-called “Great Underground Wall”—a 
network of 3,000 miles of tunnels and underground nuclear facilities 
that was first revealed several years ago.<br />
“China has a track record of using warhead systems on multiple missile 
programs,” he said. “The advent of multiple warheads on the DF-41 may 
indicate new versions of the DF-31 may be so equipped. If real, this 
would accelerate China’s warhead growth.”<br />
The testing of a third DF-31 variant, along with Moscow’s nuclear 
weapons modernization program “places greater pressure on Washington to 
proceed with modernizing America’s nuclear deterrent,” Fisher said.<br />
Mark Stokes, a specialist on Chinese strategic forces, said the new ICBM variant could be a technically improved weapon.<br />
“A DF-31B would most likely be an incremental, phased improvement on the DF-31A,” said Stokes, with the Project 2049 Institute.<br />
“As a matter of PLA defense industrial process, R&D on an improved 
variant would have begun after the DF-31A entered full rate production,”
 Stokes said.<br />
The Pentagon’s most recent annual report on the Chinese military states 
“The Second Artillery continues to modernize its nuclear forces by 
enhancing its silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and
 adding more survivable mobile delivery systems.”<br />
“In recent years, the road-mobile, solid-propellant [DF-31A] ICBM has 
entered service,” the report said, adding that “China also is developing
 a new road-mobile ICBM known as the Dong Feng-41 (DF-41), possibly 
capable of carrying multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles 
(MIRV).”<br />

According to sina.com.cn, China will adopt the following six new 
technologies in its 095 attack nuclear submarines: new water injection 
propulsion, super strong steel, mixed single and double-hull structure, 
new comprehensive vibration reduction floating raft and vertical launch 
tube for cruise missile. <br />

The website says that the new submarine has to have an underwater 
speed not less than 33 knots, silent cruise speed not less than 18 
knots, and maximum submerging depth not less than 600 meters.<br />

That means the submarine is better than US Virginia-class and comparable to US Seawolf-class attack nuclear submarine. <br />
