During the military parade in Beijing,
China, which was held during the celebrations marking 70 years of the
founding of the People's Republic of China, military unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAV) of China were showcased among other miliary equipment in a
 parade. Here is the complete list and analysis of Air Recognition
editorial team of these UAVs and drones shown during the military parade
 in order of appearance, on October 1, 2019.</div>

<hr class="line" />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The weaponry includes reconnaissance drones in multi-range and multi-altitude areas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Among them, a high-altitude high-speed
reconnaissance drone, the only all black-coating UAV in the parade, made
 public appearance for the first time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The phalanx showcases the new-type
combat force in the future warfare and all these aerial armaments
reviewed are domestically-developed, said Dang Dongxing, a military
official of one of the phalanxes, noting that China's unmanned combat
armaments are close to or have reached the world-leading level in some
aspects.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hypersonic  WZ-8 "Dark Sword" UAV
was unveiled. It could likely be able to fly at a high-supersonic speed
and have stealth capabilities, military analysts said. They added that
the new drone has small wings and is shaped like a dagger. It is meant
to be launched in the air via a bomber or transport aircraft.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The drone could provide more reliable
reconnaissance data than satellites. The biggest advantage of the drone
is that it can effectively gather intelligence in real-time in a
controllable way compared to other platforms like satellites, Wu Jian,
editor of Defense Weekly under Shanghai-based Xinmin Evening News, was
quoted as saying by Global Times.</div>

or helicopter. JY-203 system can keep constant imaging resolution within
 the entire effective detection area, and has certain penetration
characteristics, under the influence of light, dust, smoke, fog, cloud
and temperature. It is featured with a large detection area and long
detection range.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another new drone on display in Beijing
was the GJ-11 "Sharp Sword" long-range stealth attack drone, which is
based on the American-made B-2 strategic bomber, and is designed to
strike targets deep in enemy territory without being detected.<br /><br />The
 design of the Chinese-made GJ-11 "Sharp Sword" seems very similar to
the American-made X-47B from Northrop Grumann and the
Russian-made Okhotnik (Hunter) which has performed its first successful
maiden flight on July 2019.<br /><br />The GJ-11 is part of a unmanned
aerial vehicle program launched in China by Shenyang Aircraft Design
Institute (SYADI) of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and
Shenyang Aerospace University. The Sharp Sword is jet-powered and has a
wingspan of 14 meters. It's not yet known the precise mission Sharp
Sword is assigned, but possible missions would including reconnaissance
and eventually combat missions. On Nov 21 2013, Sharp Sword conducted a
20-minute long maiden flight from HAIG's airfield.</div>

 is a delta-wing aircraft with a pusher propeller that looks virtually
identical to the Harpy. It is designed to fly into hostile airspace and
loiter until it detects a radar, at which point it homes in on the
target and destroys it. The ASN-301 has a flying time of 4 hours and a
range of 280 km. Rather than holding a separate high-explosive warhead,
the drone itself is the main ammunition. The warhead contains a total of
 7,000 fragment and has a destructive range of 20 m.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It can either operate fully
autonomously, or it can be controlled by a remote operator. It is
designed to attack radar systems and is optimized for the SEAD
(Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) role.</div>

    Dark Sword/Anjian<br />
<br />
Images of a remotely piloted fighter jet designed by Chinese aircraft makers caused immediate paranoia on Tuesday at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.sg/chinas-dark-sword-fighter-jet-is-a-nightmare-for-the-us-military-2018-6/?r=US&IR=T" target="_blank">Business Insider</a>, which dubbed the aircraft a “nightmare for the US.”<br />
<br />
The Dark Sword jet brings several threats to the table, BI reported. For
 example, the aircraft has supersonic flight performance, as indicated
by "F-22-style vertical stabilizers," air combat expert Justin Bronk of
British think tank Royal United Services told the outlet.<br />
<br />
The US Navy initiated an unmanned combat aircraft program in the early
2000s, but it was eventually terminated. Northrop Grumman's X-47B
aircraft demonstrator conducted flight tests in 2013 from an aircraft
carrier, but the Navy decided to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW_O2nbii7c" target="_blank">develop a drone</a> to perform aerial
refueling missions for carrier operations instead. That program, now
known as the MQ-25A Stingray, aims to put drone tankers onto carriers by
 the mid-2020s.<br />
<br />
<img alt="This is what the US wants its new drones to do. Not as exciting, is it?" class="bi_image size-medium wp-image-1051337 td-animation-stack-type0-2" id="image-5ac658fafc23b32d008b4725" src="https://static.businessinsider.sg/2018/06/06/5ac658fafc23b32d008b4725.jpg" /><br />
<br />
In addition to its speed, Dark Sword could give China an edge by
relieving Beijing from having to train so many pilots, Bronk said,
especially if the fighter-style drones can be mass produced. Large
numbers of Dark Swords could "at the very least soak up missiles from US
 fighters," he said. "If you can produce lots of them, quantity has a
quality of its own."<br />

<br />
"At the very best," the supersonic plane would become a viable fighter
aircraft in its own right, Bronk noted, in which case the US could be
confronting a massive force of remotely piloted supersonic aircraft that
 might even exhibit greater maneuverability than manned adversaries
since there is no pilot physically inside the plane whose vitals must be
 protected, BI reports. Piloted aircraft are limited in their
maneuverability by g-forces exerted on the pilots inside, as too sharp a
 turn can force blood out of the pilot's head and cause loss of
consciousness.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, the expert said that since "we only see what the Chinese
want us to see," the plane's specifications on paper don't imply its
actual fighting capabilities.

Jiang Taiyu, one of the chief designers of AV500W, said the aircraft fired weapons during its maiden flight test in August.<br />
“The helicopter is able to take off and land on almost any landform
including plateaus and canyons. It can operate in cold and tropical
environments. It will be useful in border patrols, counterterrorism
operations and low-intensity conflicts because it can carry out
very-low-altitude penetration and keep hovering for a while,” he said.<br />
<br />
Mr. Jiang said that all of the helicopter’s tests will be finished
before the end of this year and it will be ready for mass production in
2018.<br />
“Several nations have told us that they are interested in this aircraft.
 This is because there are a very small number of unmanned helicopters
in the world that can perform strikes, while demand for such types is
not small,” Mr. Jiang said.<br />
He said only the U.S. and Israel have developed unmanned armed
helicopters such as the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout in the U.S.<br />
<br />
<b>Numerous capabilities</b><br />
An armed AV500W typically carries four air-to-ground missiles, which use
 radar homing technology for guidance. Each missile weighs eight
kilograms and can hit a target five kilometres away, the report quoted
AVIC officials as saying. It also can carry bombs or a machine-gun pod.<br />
<br />
More than 400 helicopter producers and parts suppliers from 22 nations
and regions — including the US, Russia and France — are taking part in
the <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/china-displays-its-first-unmanned-attack-helicopter/article19689895.ece?homepage=true" target="_blank">helicopter expo</a>. They brought 98 aircraft to the event. <br />

The Sharp Sword is the first non-NATO stealthy unmanned combat aerial
vehicle (UCAV). Built by Aviation Industry Corporation of China, with
much of the work done by the Hongdu Aviation Industry Group, the Sharp
Sword first flew in November 2013. Looking a bit like a mini-B-2 flying
wing bomber, the UCAV has two internal bomb bays and a likely payload of
 about 4,400 pounds. Its engine is a non-afterburning WS-13 turbofan
engine, with inlet serpentine to hide the engine from enemy radars (the
first Sharp Sword does not use a stealthy nozzle due to its technology
demonstrator status). It has a length of about 33 feet, and a wingspan
of about 46 feet. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
 </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
Other similar foreign systems include the American X-47B, the British
Taranis, and the French Neuron. Stealthy UCAVs have a number of
advantages over their manned counterparts: they can fit the same
internal payload onto a smaller airframe, and have much longer ranges,
in addition to the typical advantages of unmanned aerial vehicles, like
longer flight times.<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
 </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
Reporting from the Chinese Internet suggests that a second, even
stealthier Sharp Sword began flying last year (with a stealthy engine).
If flight testing with the prototypes goes as well as the initial flight
 tests did with the first airframe, the Sharp Sword could enter service
as early as 2019-2020.<br />
<br />

Initially, it's believed that the Sharp Sword will be used for
reconnaissance in areas with dense air defense networks, as well as
tailing foreign warships. As the Chinese develops a familiarity with the
 Sharp Sword, it could be used for combat operations as a "first through
 the door" weapon against highly defended, high-value targets, as well
as an aerial tanker for other drones and carrier aircraft (akin to plans
 for the U.S. MQ-25). There is even the possibility of carrier version
for China's planned next generation of catapult equipped aircraft
carriers.<br />
<br />

Eventually, advances in distributed systems and artificial
intelligence could help the Sharp Sword be a robotic wingman to manned
aircraft in an unmanned/manned operational concept. It could even take
on autonomous missions of its own.<br />
<br />
<div class="mol-para-with-font">

<span style="font-size: 18px;"><b>AVIC report: China's Taihang engine widely deployed in military</b></span><br />
By Jiang Jie (<a class="externalLink" href="http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">People's Daily Online</a>) 14:45, July 07, 2016<br />
<br />
China’s Taihang engines have become a significant, large-scale presence
in the military, making China the third country in the world that has
mass deployment of domestically-produced high-thrust engines for
military use, according to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China
(AVIC) annual report.<br />
<br />
AVIC's social responsibility report showed that the company is capable
of independently conducting research and development on the next
generation of high-thrust aerial engines, along with advanced drones
such as Wing Loong, which have also been deployed in the military.<br />
<br />
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force has deployed no less than
400 Taihang engines in five air force regiments. Various types of
fighter jets are equipped with the engine, including the J-11B and J-15
carrier-based fighter jets, reported China Science Communication, a news
 site under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. So far there have been no
crashes due to engine failure among Taihang engine-equipped fighter
jets, the news site also noted.<br />
<br />
Some doubts have been voiced about the originality of the Taihang
engine, as there are people who believe the Chinese-made engine is a
copy of its Western counterparts. However, according to China Science
Communication, the development of the Taihang engine was based on
accumulated experience and technological advances gathered since 1978.
The engine was also based partially on its predecessor, WS-6, which
spent some 20 years in development.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the engine also took inspiration from the control system of
Russia's AL-31F aircraft turbofan engine, China Science Communication
admitted, calling the Taihang engine a result of “independent
development combined with technology from the Soviet Union and the U.S.”<br />
<br />
“China has become the fourth country in the world to independently
design and produce large transportation aircraft, as well as the third
country to independently develop stealth fighter jets,” the AVIC report
said, adding that China has advanced its air-to-air and air-to-ground
missiles to the fourth generation.

 Aug. 25 report in Beijing-based newspaper China Aviation News praised
the engine division of Xi'an-based aeronautic and aerospace firm AVIC
Qingan Group.</a> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">

<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
The report mentions a planned project which would see the development of China's first domestically-made <span style="color: red;">turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine</span>,
 designed for an unnamed aircraft. The description of this engine
suggests something resembling the Pratt and Whitney J58 variable cycle
engine used by the SR-71 Blackbird.<br />
<br />
A source close to the PLA Air Force was cited by New Outlook as stating that this is <span style="color: red;">part of a project to develop a manned supersonic aircraft</span>,
 currently in the preparation stages at a domestic research institute.
The aircraft is expected to have a top speed faster than the Blackbird
on completion, according to the source, although the project is yet to
be formally launched.<br />
<br />
The China Aviation News report stated that in the first half of 2015,
the engine division of AVIC Qingan Group finished the design process for
 three engine products and gained approval for them in May and July.<br />
<br />
The article went on to list descriptions of the three engines as China's
 first domestically developed turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine
designed for an unnamed aircraft, a classic model engine and a classic
model engine with a medium bypass ratio. This suggests the latter two
are improved versions of the WS-10 and WS-18 turbofan engines.<br />
<br />
The turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine project, however, has never
before been made public. The article stated that there is no precedent
for the project and that China currently has no suitable heat-resistant
materials for the project and therefore will have to contract overseas
suppliers, adding that without the appropriate tools, they will have to
go about making them from scratch.<br />
<br />
A PLA Air Force source told New Outlook that the aircraft that <span style="color: red;">will use this engine has been in experimental development for several years by an aircraft institute in the southwest.</span> The aim of the project is to surpass the SR-71 Blackbird with a plane that can reach<span style="color: red;"> speeds of almost five-times the speed of sound,</span>
 which is the upper limit of a ramjet engine. For higher speeds, a
supersonic combusting ramjet (scramjet) engine is necessary. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
The <span style="color: red;">aircraft is said to be a large manned plane, with a similar design to Mikoyan's mysterious Project 301 hypersonic aircraft.</span></div>

DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle<br />
<br />
New DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle is a nuclear strike weapon, according
 to the Pentagon.<br />
Has conducted five tests of the DF-ZF since last
 year, an indication it is a high-priority weapons system. China’s
Defense Ministry has confirmed tests of the weapon, saying only it is an
 experimental system.<br />
The glide vehicle, launched atop a missile, travels along the edge of
space at Mach 10, or nearly 8,000 miles an hour. Yet the vehicle is
agile enough to overcome the effects of high-speed travel to maneuver –
both to avoid missile defenses and for zeroing in on targets.<br />
The DF-ZF can also be armed with a conventional warhead, making it
third missile outfitted with precision guidance that is accurate
 enough to attack ships at sea.<br />
