<br />
The military channel of people.com.cn carried a report on CCTV’s
interview with Chinese military expert Real Admiral Yin Zhuo about the 3
 new nuclear submarines.
<br />
As CCTV is China’s top official TV media and Real Admiral is a navy
insider, we believe, the report provides rare official information about
 China’s nuclear submarines.<br />
<br />

First, Real Admiral Yin told the reporter that the design standards
of China’s nuclear submarines are in the main equal to usual world
standards.<br />

When CCTV quotes media report that as 093G has Vertical Launch Systerm (VLS), it is better by
far than Russia’s Oscar-class nuclear submarine and a real “aircraft
carrier killer”. Yin said that was not a scientific view. <br />

He said judging by the photo, the displacement of a 093G was but a
few thousand tons but that of Russia’s Oscar-class is 20,000 tons.<br />
 It
can carry 24 missiles 4 tons each with a large range and supersonic
speed. That is formidable fire power. A 093G is better in its VLS that
enable it to attack targets in all direction.<br />
<br />

Yin said: the initial design of 093G meant to give 093G powerful
anti-ship and defense-breaking capabilities. The capabilities of land
attack and relatively strong anti-submarine capabilities were added to
the design later.<br />
<br />

In addition, Yin revealed that a submarine was only able to detect
surface ships within a distance of several dozen of kilometers, but the
range of its anti-ship missile has a range of a few hundred kilometers
while its anti-ground cruise missile has a range exceeding 1,000
kilometers.<br />
Therefore, the submarine relies on the information provided
by satellite and aircraft, which transmit the information to the
submarine through land-based long-wave radio station.<br />
<br />

He said, “A submarine needs a full set of external communication
system to ensure its combat capabilities. At present, we have complete
capabilities to safeguard our Type 093G nuclear submarines. We can
provide such protection no matter where they have sailed to for battle
operation.<br />
<br />

<i>people.com.cn “Type 093G nuclear submarine threatens large
warships and can be installed with anti-ground cruise missiles</i>”<br />

Citing Taiwan's Defence Interntional magazine <i>wantchinatimes</i>, the report said the manufacturing of two Type 093G nuclear subs — upgraded versions of the Type 093 — were completed by the Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co in December, with another resting in a dry dock.</div>

The primary difference between Type 093G subs and Type 093 subs is that the former added a vertical launcher capable of firing cruise missiles and the YJ-18 anti-ship missil, the report said.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 16.4830207824707px; margin: 0.5em 0px 1em; orphans: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
Based on available photos, the Type 093G also has a traditional teardrop shape similar to foreign modern nuclear subs, with a wing-shaped cross-section designed to improve speed and mobility as well as reduce noise. Together with the ability to equip YJ-18 missiles.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 16.4830207824707px; margin: 0.5em 0px 1em; orphans: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
.Taking cost and price into consideration, Sina Military believes the YJ-18 is powered by a turbojet engine as well as a solid-fuel rocket similar to that used by Russia's 3M-54E missile, guaranteeing warhead acceleration to at least 2.9 Mach.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 16.4830207824707px; margin: 0.5em 0px 1em; orphans: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
In addition to being an anti-ship missile, the YJ-18 serializes and universalizes the PLA Navy's missile systems through its compatibility with vertical launchers, laying a solid foundation for building surface warships with greater stealth capabilities.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 16.4830207824707px; margin: 0.5em 0px 1em; orphans: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
Foreign media estimates that the PLA Navy curently has 3-4 strategic nuclear subs, 5-6 attack nuclear subs and 2-3 Han-class nuclear subs in service. </div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 16.4830207824707px; margin: 0.5em 0px 1em; orphans: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
The addition of the Type 093G sub, which has a missile attack range of 300km, means it can provide strong support in taking on enemy aircraft carriers along with long-range bombers and surface warships. The Type 093 sub can also use long-range missiles to attack targets on foreign soil, laying a solid foundation for the development of the next-gen Type 095 sub.</div>

<br />
A computer-generated image of a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine (SSN)
has recently appeared on both news and social media websites. It
illustrates a variant of the Type 093/Shang-class SSN carrying a docking
 hangar for a special forces swimmer delivery vehicle (SDV).<br />
<br />
The accompanying text indicates the hangar can accommodate only about
2/3 of the length of the SDV (which it compares with the US Mk VIII SDV)
 and so remains flooded when the vehicle is docked. Consequently, as
transfer of personnel to the SDV cannot easily be achieved with the
submarine dived, the graphic shows SF personnel being transferred to the
 submarine by helicopter. The article refers to this as a wet-deck
system and the SSN variant as a Type 093T.<br />
<br />
The illustration also shows four panels on the side of the submarine
that appear to represent sonar flank arrays and also a deployment tube
above the upper rudder that would be used for streaming a towed array,
as in Russian submarines.<br />
<br />
The accompanying text also highlights that a six-bladed conventional
propeller is illustrated rather than one with seven blades, which it
states is fitted to the Type 093 and 093A, or the shrouded propulsor,
which it claims is fitted to the Type 093B.<br />
<br />
The explanation given is that the Type 093T is designed to operate in
coastal waters where there is likely to be a high level of fishing
vessel activity, and ingested trawl wires are easier to clear from a
conventional propeller than a propulsor. It also states that the
seven-bladed propellers were too thin and susceptible to damage.<br />

<br />
<br />
Some information
about China’s nuclear submarines based on a report in a pro-Beijing Hong
 Kong magazine.<br />
The magazine says that third generation of
nuclear submarines had long been in service and gives the submarines the
 codenames of Types 095 and 096.
<br />
Those codenames are certainly not official as so far there has not been any official news about them.<br />
This blogger published at his websites quite a few posts on China’s
nuclear submarines later including a piece of news on China’s success in
 developing its fourth-generation nuclear submarine based on the speech
of a Chinese provincial-level official.<br />
However, there has never been official revelation of the codenames of China’s advanced nuclear submarines.<br />
Recently, Taiwan’s Defense International magazine published a
satellite photo of two China’s newest nuclear submarines taken by Google
 map. The photo shows that by December 2014, Hulu Island
Shipyard has completed the construction of 2 Type 093G2 nuclear
submarines. Yesterday, the website of Taiwan’s Defense Ministry confirms
 Defense International’s report in its website.<br />
The website says that the three new submarines are the second
modified version of Type 093 installed with a new generation of nuclear
reactors that lag only a little behind the best of US counterparts. It
gives the submarine the codename 093G2 as there has been a preceding
modified version that it refers to as 093G1 with low noise that the US
cannot trace. The two are perhaps the Type 095 mentioned in the
above-mentioned post of mine that the US has failed to detect. Type
093G2 will be even harder to detect and trace. According to Western
standards, 093G2 can be regarded as a three and half generation nuclear
submarine. The new reactor will be more powerful to enhance the
submarine’s maneuverability.<br />
The great new development in 093G2 is its vertical launch system
(VLS). From the photo of Google map, only 3 units of VSL can be seen
behind the sail hull of the submarine.<br />
There may be 12 to 24 VLS tubes for launching YJ-18 anti-ship
missiles and anti-ground cruise missiles. Coordinated with other cruise
missiles from aircrafts and warships, the YJ-18s can be launched
simultaneously for saturate attack at an aircraft carrier.<br />
The installation of VLS makes the submarine a multifunctional one with anti-submarine, anti-ship and ground attack capabilities.<br />

In the 1960s, China made G-class submarine no. 200 with relatively
large saile hull. It originally carried 3 missiles but later reduced to
two. For a long time, the submarine was used for submarine launch of
missiles. According to Major Colonel Peng Tianhua’s analysis, there are
some advantages in the design of G-class submarine. It is a conventional
 submarine very quiet and better concealed. The working environment for
its crew is better than a nuclear submarine.<br />
According to media reports, China has already mastered AIP technology
 so that its submarines can sail far away quietly. Judging by the size
of its missiles show in China’s National Day parade, its missiles are
small enough to be carried by a G-class submarine. If China produces
submarines similar to G-class one that are able to carry three missiles
with a range of 1,000 nautical mile. Their combat capabilities are quite
 great even if a missile has only a single warhead. Another advantage of
 such a submarine is that its technology is quite mature so that it can
be exported to other countries such as Pakistan.<br />
<br />
US military has failed to get data about China’s Type 093 submarine.<br />
According to Pentagon, the submarine uses pressurized water reactor. It
was not until recently that the US learnt that China is leader in the
technology of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. It concludes that the
 comprehensive capabilities of 093 submarine is enough to counter the
improved version of Los Angelis-class submarine while its noise level
and attack capabilities are close to US Seawolf- and Virginia-class
submarines.<br />
What is most shocking to the US is that Type 093 surpasses
US nuclear submarines in its high speed and depth of submergence.<br />
