“We could have gone deeper, but we did not want to push it to the limit 
too early,” said Professor Yu Jiancheng, the lead scientist of the Haiyi
 project.<br />

at the University of Washington.</div>

Scarlet, another submersible glider developed at
 Rutgers University, in the United States, made history as the first 
robot to swim across the Atlantic Ocean in 2009.</div>

Both gliders were now being used by the US Navy.</div>

<a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/2012137/chinas-successful-test-deep-sea-underwater-glider-interests-peoples" target="_blank">Haiyi</a>, in Chinese, means “sea wings”. The 
underwater vessel is shaped like of a yellow torpedo with a pair of 
wings; its number denotes the maximum depth in metres to which it could 
dive.</div>

To travel so far underwater, Haiyi needs to shrink in size to increase its density.</div>

The vessel then inflates to increase its buoyancy in order to move upwards.</div>

During each rise and fall, Haiyi’s wings drive the vehicle to move forwards, the same way that a glider travels through the air.</div>

It can cruise noiselessly beneath the surface of
 an entire ocean without human intervention for days, months, or a year –
 all the while collecting data for scientific research and monitoring 
environment in vast areas. </div>

When necessary,an underwater glider could also switch into action against a designated target, such as submarine.</div>

It can be let loose individually, or as part of a group of hundreds like a pack of wolves roaming over a steppe for prey.</div>

China’s underwater glider experiment was carried
 out on board Tansuo-1, the academy’s new 94-metre long ship, which is 
part of China’s rapidly expanding scientific research fleet.</div>

The ship completed its first voyage – returning 
to harbour in Sanya on August 12 – after carrying other advanced 
deep-sea exploration equipment developed by Chinese researchers.</div>

It also transported a deep-sea robot, called 
Haidou, which is able to operate below a depth of 10,000 metres while 
collecting mineral and marine life samples on the world’s deepest sea 
beds.</div>

Haiyi carried on board the maiden 
voyage of China’s submersible mother ship, Tansuo-1 – was deployed above
 the Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific, an ocean trench with the 
greatest known ocean depth of 11,034 metres from late June to early 
August.<br />

“Going deep turned out to be easier than we previously thought,” he said.

“In very deep water you don’t need to worry about sharks or fish nets. It’s really peaceful and quiet down there.”</div>

Yu’s team was one of a number of research groups in China that have been developing underwater glider technology.</div>

Other gliders included the Haiyan, which was 
developed by researchers at Tianjin University, and several classified 
models that are currently being tested by the PLA Navy.</div>

Yu’s work started years ago, but up until 2014 
the maximum depth achieved by Haiyi and other Chinese underwater gliders
 was no greater than 1,500 metres. </div>
<div class="v2-processed">
To go deeper underwater, the scientists had to 
overcome the challenge of building a glider using a lightweight material
 that was also extremely strong so that it could withstand tremendous 
pressures. Only a handful of nations are able to develop such 
technologies.</div>

The Chinese researchers were also working under a
 time pressure because of demand to create deep-sea exploration vehicles
 from the government.</div>

In recent years, the nation had significantly 
increased its scientific activities in the oceans, where much of the 
world’s untapped energy and mineral resources can be found.</div>

The demand for such vehicles was also to meet military requirements.</div>

The relatively simple sensors on the current 
version of Haiyi were able to measure the temperature and salinity of 
sea water at various depth, but this information was also of interest to
 the PLA as valuable intelligence, Yu said.</div>

“The military can use the temperature and 
salt-level data from the deep to build a complete, precise model of the 
physical ocean,” Yu said.</div>

dangerous areas and predict the occurrence of deathtrap currents, which 
might jeopardise a naval operation.”</div>

Yu refused to confirm when and whether the Haiyi-7000 would serve the PLA Navy.</div>

According to an article on the website of the 
Chinese Academy of Sciences, a 1,000-metre version of Haiyi has already 
been deployed in the western areas of the South China Sea, where China 
and Vietnam have territorial disputes.</div>

At the moment, the cost of an underwater glider 
was about 100 million yuan (HK$116 million) on the international market,
 but Yu said he expected the price would drop sharply once mass 
production started.</div>

With improved technology, the vessel would also 
be able to carry a greater variety of sensors – perhaps even weapons 
with the capability of damaging or destroying a military target.</div>

“An underwater glider comes with a structure that is much less sophisticated than that of a car,” Yu said.</div>

“A small car in China can be sold for only 
30,000 to 40,000 yuan. I think the glider won’t be more expensive than 
that if the annual production runs to hundreds of thousands,” he said.</div>

Yu declined to reveal more technical details 
about Haiyi, such as how long it could operate after being deployment 
and how far it could travel.</div>

The glider carries a high-density lithium 
battery, which provides energy for its sensors. It also needs power when
 beaming data to satellites.</div>

One area where unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) and 
unmanned surface vehicles (USV) would make a splash is in Chinese 
anti-submarine warfare (ASW) efforts.<br />
The China State 
Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which builds virtually all PLAN 
warships, has proposed an "Underwater Great Wall" of sensors, positioned
 on the seabed floor, to listen for enemy submarines. (The US had a 
similar system on the Atlantic Ocean floor to listen for Soviet 
submarines.) Such underwater listening posts may already have been 
installed near the giant PLAN base at Sanya, Hainan Island in the South 
China Sea. On a more optimistic note, CSSC suggested that an Underwater 
Great Wall would be useful for warning against natural disasters like 
tsunami, and could be used to collect research data on marine life and 
geology.<br />

3,000 meters underwater, the Underwater Great Wall will be supported by a
 wide range of USVs. Chinese researchers intend that these autonomous 
USVs will be able to work in conjunction with the seabed sensor picket 
line, and autonomously locate and track enemy submarines.<br />

The  Semi-Autonomous Robotic Vehicle can be launched from torpedo
 tubes and racks on submarines, surface ships, missiles and aircraft, 
which would extend the situational awareness of Chinese submarines, 
while reducing risk from hostile ASW forces.</div>

For example, one USV is the torpedo shaped 
Semi-Autonomous Robotic Vehicle (SARV). It has ports on its front for 
sensor installation, and a dorsal (top) side detachable sensor pod 
(possibly passive sonar). It can be launched out of a submarine's 
torpedo tube, enabling it to act as a force multiplier for Chinese 
submarines, in addition to its underwater great wall duties.<br />

Double Bodied UUV</div>

This innovative double bodied unmanned underwater vehicle allows 
for more sensitive sensors (especially passive sonar to listen for other
 submarines) in the smaller upper body, and a lighter mass compared to a
 larger UUV with similar performance.</div>

Another type of USV are dual bodied USVs. The main 
propulsion hull has another, smaller hull attached to its top, which can
 carry a wide range of sensitive ASW equipment (the smaller hull can 
even come with its own sensor pods). Additionally, there are more 
conventional underwater gliders which manipulate their buoyancy and 
wings in order to glide between seawater layers of different temperature
 and densities.<br />

The 5-10 ton Autonomous Robotic Vehicle (ARV), which is 
similar to USN's LDUUV in size and shape, is intended for long endurance
 missions and hauling larger payloads than your average torpedo-like 
UUV.  The ARV can be deployed submarines and surface ships, and likely 
has a modular payload capacity for surveillance, intelligence 
collection, mine countermeasure and anti-submarine warfare missions.<br />

To fully unlock the potential of UUVs, Chinese scientists
 will have to master autonomous intelligence for these underwater 
robots, not just individually but also to teach them to 'swarm', in 
working together with one another with little or no human oversight, as

Technological advances in maritime drones will make the ocean 
‘transparent,’ meaning weapons such as Britain’s Trident nuclear 
submarines will be unable to hide from enemy detection, according to a 
top academic.

Professor Paul Rogers, who
 teaches security at Bradford University, made the comments in an 
analysis piece for Open Democracy on Thursday.<br />

“<em>One issue in particular is of deep concern to the authorities: whether the oceans are in the process of becoming transparent</em>,” he warned.<br />
“<em>If the submarines which carry the missiles become detectable, they will no longer constitute a secure nuclear force.</em>”</div>

Technologies
 designed for civil maritime exploration such as Underwater Unmanned 
Vehicles (UUV), which are effectively sea drones, are likely to make 
the seas “<em>transparent</em>” in a way they had not previously been, said Rogers.<br />
He accepted the climate of debate in the UK around Trident nuclear weapons is extremely tense.<br />

“<em>In
 Britain at the present time, any suggestion that the Trident 
replacement system may prove to be a non-starter is met with 
considerable opposition from defense sources, and not a little anger at 
the way the issue keeps surfacing, so to speak,</em>” he said.<br />
Apart from strategic concerns about obsolescence, campaigners recently highlighted the spiraling costs of Trident.<br />

Campaign
 for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) warned on May 12 that replacing Britain’s
 aging Trident nuclear deterrent will likely cost £205 billion (US$296 
billion), more than doubling initial estimates in 2014.<br />
They 
calculated the figure using the latest publicly available data, answers 
to parliamentary questions and previous costs of relevant items 
including warheads.<br />
CND noted the figure did not take into account the fact Ministry of Defence (MoD) projects typically go over budget.<br />

This year, the Pentagon’s advanced research projects 
department will start testing their new “submarine” drone, which can lie
 in wait on the ocean floor for years before ever being launched into 
the skies.<br />
The new drones, being developed by the Defense Advanced Research
  Projects Agency (DARPA), are part of a new focus by the US
  military in developing and improving technology for emerging
  threats.<br />
<br />
These deployable, unmanned systems and sensors can theoretically
  lie on the deep-ocean floor for years at time in anticipation of
  the US Navy’s need for non-lethal assistance. When needed, the
  deep-sea nodes can be activated remotely and recalled to the
  surface.<br />

DARPA will specifically be testing whether the drones can survive
  for years under extreme pressure before being triggered from a
  distance, and whether they can rise through a water column and
  relay information. The tests are part of DARPA’s two phases under
  its Upward Falling Payloads (UFP) program.

The UFP’s would be equipped with electronic and low-power laser
  attack capabilities, surveillance sensors, and airborne and
  aquatic drones that would have the ability to act as decoys or
  offer intelligence and targeting data.<br />

Much of the testing will be done in the Western Pacific. Nearly
  50 percent of the world’s oceans are deeper than 2.5 miles (4km),
  which provides areas of concealment and storage so assets can
  remain undetected for long periods of time and still be recalled
  when needed. The vastness also allows for simultaneous operation
  across great distances.<br />

“<i>Today, the US Navy puts capability on the ocean floor using
  very capable but fairly expensive submarine platforms,</i>” said
  Steven H. Walker, deputy director of DARPA. “<i>What we’d like
  to do in this program is preposition capability on the ocean
  floor and have it available to be triggered [in] real time.”</i><br />

The US Navy already uses ocean-faring drones called Slocum
  Gliders to scan the sea and transmit information – mostly weather
  and surveillance data – to ships. These drones don’t need fuel to
  operate, but use ocean currents for propulsion and buoyancy to
  shift direction.

DARPA released a biennial report last week summarizing its
  evolving focus to maintain America’s strategic position in the
  world.<br />
<br />
“<i>DARPA’s mission and philosophy have held steady for decades,
  but the world around DARPA has changed dramatically,</i>” the
  report says. <i>“Those changes include some remarkable and even
  astonishing scientific and technological advances … at the same
  time, the world is experiencing some deeply disturbing technical,
  economic and geopolitical shifts that pose threats to US
  preeminence and stability.”</i>

DARPA is seeking a 59 percent increase in the UFP budget, from
  $11.9 million to 19 million, it was reported in March. But
  overall, President Barack Obama requested a $3 billion budget for
  DARPA for the fiscal year 2016, a slight increase over previous
  years. This would enable the agency to carry out ambitious
  project in four areas outlined in its biennial report – Rethink
  Complex Military Systems; Master the Information Explosion;
  Harness Biology as Technology; and Expand the Technological
  Frontier.<br />

“<i>The reason we’re able to have this big impact is because we
  work with and tap the resources of a vast technological
  ecosystem,</i>” DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar said in a press
  briefing. “<i>Much is done with universities and companies of
  every stripe – defense contractors, but also commercial companies
  as small as startups and as big as major firms.”</i>
