Type 055 destroyer launches yesterday in the JNCX shipyard

Report have 113MW total power, is pretty insane (if accurate, a bit unbelievable),
If true this pretty much confirms
that the 055 is using integrated electric propulsion. The ship doesn't
require that much power for propulsion and conventional systems
considering the heavier (15,000t) Zumwalt produces 78MW and has a
similar top speed (33.5 knots).
The Zumwalt also produces 58 MW of
reserve power while moving at 20 knots, meaning the ship requires 20 MW
to move at 20 knots. The BAE 32 MJ rail gun requires 25 MW of power to
sustain fire at 10 rounds per minute thus giving DDG 1000 the ability to
accommodate 2 rail guns but the Zumwalt cannot sustain fire of even
one rail gun @10 rounds/min or other energy weapons when travelling at
full speed, there isn't enough power to be distributed.

If we assume 055 requires similar power as Zumwalt to cruise at 20 knots
(20MW) then it will have >90MW in reserve power @20 knots. Where is
all that energy going to? If the power figure for 055 is accurate then
it is most definitely designed to field rail guns and direct energy
weapons and other energy thirsty platforms. If not 055 then its
successor variants will.

The appearance of a picture of the ceremony on the commencement of
the construction of Type 055 destroyer last December has attracted lots
of speculation among foreign media. A US media says that China’s Type
055 missile destroyer can be a rival to or even surpass US Aegis
destroyer.
It is said that the destroyer has a displacement of 12,000 tons, second only to DDG-1000 that the US is building.
According to US media, 055 destroyer carries 128 anti-ship and
surface-to-ground cruise missiles and air defense missiles and may even
be armed with an electromagnetic gun and laser weapon. Such a large
warship is in fact a cruiser rather than a destroyer.
In the US, a cruiser is the major defense warship of an aircraft
carrier battle group. In Soviet Union which has no aircraft carrier, a
cruiser is the core of a fleet.
Some people may find it wield that there is so much speculation since
no one knows whether the picture is true. However, Wuhan Shipyard does
have built and tested the upper structure of the destroyer. As such
construction and tests are usual procedures in building a new warship,
it’s natural that the picture has drawn much attention.
Chinese military expert Yin Zhuo said in an interview with CCTV
(Chinese government’s major TV media) that he believed that there must
be great innovation in the destroyer by using digital complete electric
propulsion so that there will be enough electric power for laser weapons
and electromagnetic gun.
Judging by the model of the upper structure of Type 055 destroyer in
Wuhan, the destroyer is perhaps 180 meters long and 20 meters wide with a
displacement exceeding 10,000 tons.
Yin believes that the destroyer will serve as the core of a Chinese fleet before China has commissioned more aircraft carriers.
Trial production of the TA-600 aircraft, intended to be the world's
largest amphibious aircraft, has started in China following completion
of the design process, a company executive said Sunday. The aircraft,
with a maximum takeoff weight of 53.5 tons and a maximum range of more
than 5,000 kilometers, is larger than a Boeing 737 and could be used for
firefighting and air-sea rescue, said Fu Junxu, general manager of
China Aviation Industry General Aircraft's Zhuhai branch.China began
developing the aircraft five years ago. Its maiden flight is expected to
happen in late 2015, said Fu."After a period of trial flights, the
aircraft will be put onto the market," he said.
Upon completion, it will replace Japan's ShinMaywa US-2 aircraft as the largest amphibious aircraft in the world.
Airbus Defence and Space will launch the ATV (Automated Transfer
Vehicle) -5 “Georges Lemaître”. In the early hours of 30 July 2014, the
ATV will take off on the European launcher Ariane 5 ES from the European
spaceport in Kourou (French Guiana). It will set course for the
International Space Station (ISS) to begin its mission, which will last
about six months.
The ATV-5 is the last European space freighter to set off for the ISS.
With a total weight of almost 20.3 tonnes, “Georges Lemaître” has
surpassed its four predecessors by being the heaviest payload ever
launched into orbit by an Ariane. “Georges Lemaître” is expected to
reach the ISS mid August, where it will be received by an ESA astronaut.
Thanks to the success of the ATV missions, space European partners are
in a position to provide system-critical elements for an American human
mission. Airbus Defence and Space is developing, for example, the
service module for the American human spacecraft “Orion-MPCV” for the
European Space Agency (ESA)
