Footage
 of the experiments shows researchers from Massachusetts Institute of 
Technology (MIT) putting the Labrador-sized mechanical beast through its
 paces, making it run on a treadmill and climb cluttered steps while 
being periodically pulled sharply from behind with a leash.<br />

The 
four-legged robot was tested without cameras or any external sensors, 
making the machine essentially blind. Designer Sangbae Kim believes that
 such experiments are essential to finding out what the robot is capable
 of without relying too much on vision.<br />

<em>“If humans close our 
eyes and make a step, we have a mental model for where the ground might 
be, and can prepare for it. But we also rely on the feel of touch of the
 ground,”</em> Kim explained to <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2018/blind-cheetah-robot-climb-stairs-obstacles-disaster-zones-0705" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MIT News</a>. <em>“We are sort of doing the same thing by combining multiple [sources of] information to determine the transition time.”</em><br />

The robot’s incredible balance can be credited to two new pieces of 
code, a contact detection algorithm and a model-predictive control 
algorithm which help the machine determine how to react to different 
types of terrain. <em>“It’s thanks to that predictive control that can 
apply the right forces on the ground, combined with this contact 
transition algorithm that makes each contact very quick and secure,”</em> Kim said.<br />

In
 2015, footage of the Cheetah 2 robot showed the MIT-developed robot 
jumping over small obstacles with a 90 percent success rate. The 
previous incarnation of the robot relied on a visual system that used 
reflections from a laser to map terrain.<br />
<strong><br /></strong>
The
 Cheetah is somewhat reminiscent of the SpotMini, another dog-like robot
 developed by Boston Dynamics. The company hopes to make the robot 
available commercially in 2019.<br />

The newest version of the 5ft 9in (175cm), two-legged cyborg is shown 
navigating snow-covered terrain, lifting 10lb (4.5kg) boxes with ease, 
and resisting a human’s attempt to knock it over.<br />
Engineers are also seen taunting and teasing Atlas by repeatedly 
knocking one of the boxes out of its hands with a hockey stick, which 
could backfire later if the robot develops revenge programming. <i>rt</i><br />

In recent years the name Boston Dynamics has become synonymous with 
next-level robotics.<br />
The robotics company has released a number of 
amazing videos showing off their creations.<br />

Boston Dynamics have now released some footage of the new-and-improved 
model of their humanoid Atlas robot - one that can open doors, lift and 
place objects, recover from being pushed, and even stand back up after 
being knocked over. And those same emotions are bound to resurface, 
swinging from sympathy when Atlas is being pushed around, to trepidation
 when it gets pushed to the ground and manages to stand itself back 
up...remind me again where we've seen a robot keep getting up after 
being knocked down?<br />
<br />
A new version of Atlas, designed to operate outdoors and inside 
buildings. It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically
 powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and 
legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid 
obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate 
objects.<br />
This version of Atlas is about 5' 9" tall (about a head shorter
 than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.<br />

<b>American
 aerospace manufacturer SpaceX CEO is worried that Google may 
“accidentally” create an evil robot army that can turn against the human
 race.</b><br />
<br />
Google's intensive research into robotics could 
"produce something evil by accident," technology entrepreneur Elon Musk 
said in a new self-titled authorized biography, <em>The Independent</em> reported.<br />
Musk
 is the CEO at the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) 
and electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors and one of the founders of 
Pay Pal online payments system.<br />
<br />
Without clearly specifying any 
ultimate purpose, Google started to acquire robotics companies such as 
Boston Dynamics, which makes numerous types of robots, including a 
humanoid robot called Atlas and a running robot, called Big Dog, which 
was developed for and funded by the US military.<br />
Speculations point to the possibility that the robots are designed to run on a Google-developed Artificial Intelligence.<br />

reason, think and do things better than we can," Google CEO Larry Page 
said in a July 2014 interview.</blockquote>
In the past, Musk has 
publicly announced his fears that the development of AI should be 
closely monitored as it may turn out to be dangerous.<br />
AI is humankind’s biggest existential threat and its development is comparable to “summoning a demon,” he said.<br />
<br />
“The
 risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five-year 
timeframe. Ten years at most," the SpaceX CEO wrote a few months ago in a
 leaked comment to an internet publication referring to the dangers of 
AI. "Please note that I am normally super pro-technology and have never 
raised this issue until recent months. This is not a case of crying wolf
 about something I don't understand."<br />

Back in December, renowned 
physicist Stephen Hawking warned, “The development of full artificial 
intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” adding that 
"humans... couldn't compete and would be superseded" by robots.<br />
