AWACS KJ-500 has the high level of modernization than KJ-200, achieved a 
full glass cockpit, a liquid crystal display a large area. The crew is 
five, namely, the driver, copilot, air mechanic, navigator, messenger. 
In fact, with the improvement of the modernization level, only two 
people who are driving together operate the aircraft.<br />

However, the mode of operation of the aircraft is still the steering 
wheel operation, and there is no advanced telex operating system, and 
further improvements in space are limited. <br />
<br />
From abroad similar models, the internal core cabin should be a number 
of vertical layout of the integrated display console, all types of 
operators at least more than ten, and its advanced level is the world's 
leading level. KJ-500 is currently the best performance of 
China air equipment, the highest price of the AWACS, the performance of 
active phased array radar equipment more than KJ-2000 
radar.<br />

KJ-500 aircraft platform still using Y-9  transport aircraft plane. The maximum takeoff weight of 77 tons, with 4 turboprop engines, a 
cruising speed of 550 km/hour, due to the installation of a radar 
system, the flight speed of the resistance increases, some of the 
decline, but this is not a fatal flaw for early warning machine.<br />
For
 the carrier platform, the most important is the endurance time, the 
longer the natural time is the better. The load of Y-9 volume reached
 more than 20 tons, a range of 5000 kilometers or more, so its life time
 is expected to more than 10 hours longer than about KJ-2000.<br />

However, if the aircraft can be replaced with jet transport aircraft, 
especially jet aircraft, the comprehensive performance of the warning 
aircraft will be significantly improved. At the same time, disk type 
active phased array radar cover can provide 360 degree corner detection 
coverage, but the large radar is located in the fuselage above the cover
 of air resistance is very large, the flight performance of the aircraft
 and flight safety will have a great impact. Therefore, the future 
development direction of AWACS is the use of conformal phased array 
radar radome and fuselage.<br />

According to Hong Kong media 
<b>mil.ifeng.com</b>, in the military parade on September 3, will show 
off its new KJ-500 for the first time.<br />
The article at the Talking on Weapons & War column of the website
 says that KJ-2000 will absolutely be the leader in the parade formation
 of KJ-500s that have already appeared in the 
dress rehearsal of the parade will be the focus of people’s attention.<br />
Undoubtedly KJ-500 will be deployed in 
large number as it is more cost effective though we do
 not know how much KJ-500 is inferior to KJ-2000 in functions. It 
regards the use of AEW&Cs second largest instead of the largest as 
the trend in the world though the US has deployed its largest E-3 
AEW&Cs.<br />
It says that E-3 has been designed for large-scale air battle between
 superpowers without sufficient support from the ground. In air battles 
near homeland with sufficient ground support, there is no need for such 
large AEW&Cs. <br />
It says that even Israel uses smaller AEW&Cs similar in size to Gulfstream G550.<br />
KJ-2000 uses IL-76 as its platform that
 is not available in large number, China has to use its homegrown 
transport aircraft Y-9 as platform to make KJ-500 to satisfy its troops’
 demand for quite a few AEW&Cs.<br />

 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft has started to 
enter service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).<br />
While images of the KJ-500 in the PLAAF paint scheme first appeared in 
late 2014, the first image of one with an official serial number 
(30471), confirming its service entry, did not appear until 18 March.<br />
<br />
First seen in early 2013, the KJ-500 is based on the Shaanxi Aircraft 
Corporation (SAC) Y-9 four-turboprop transport combined with a fixed 
phased-array radar developed by the Nanjing Research Institute of 
Electronic Technology (NRIET, or 14th Institute).<br />
<br />
Chinese internet sources suggest that while the KJ-500 is smaller in 
size, electronic advances enable its radar to be as capable as NRIET's 
fixed array for the KJ-2000 AEW&C system that is fitted to an 
Ilyushin Il-76 platform.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'arial';"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: 15px;"><i><b> In January 2013 Chinese television reported 
this radar could track 60 to 100 targets simultaneously out to 470 km.</b></i><br />

The KJ-500 radar's three arrays are apparently the same size and 
contained in a saucer-shaped dome with an apparent satellite 
communications antenna in the middle. Other imagery indicates SAC 
considered but rejected a teardrop-shaped dome that would have allowed 
for larger side-looking arrays. The KJ-500 also features two passive 
electronic intelligence arrays.</span><br />

In Jan 5, a report on <span class="skimlinks-unlinked">huanqiu.com</span>
 about an AEW&C aircraft in Chinese air force coating. The website 
suspects that the aircraft is a KJ-500. However, KJ-500 is a codename 
given by Chinese military fans. There have so far been no official 
information of the existence of such an aircraft.
According to the photo posted in <span class="skimlinks-unlinked">huanqiu.com’s</span>
 report, the aircraft uses Y-9 as its platform, which means it can carry
 20 ton fuel and have a longer range.<br />
 It is believed that it is better 
than the KJ-2000 AEW&C aircrafts already in service especially a 
better radar.<br />

The success in developing KJ-500 enables China to be free from 
relying on Russian supply of Il-76 heavy freight aircraft as its 
platform. However, as China has tested two prototypes of its homegrown 
Y-20 heavy transport with larger loading capacity than Il-76, China may 
develop a heavier AEW&C aircraft than KJ-500 in the future.<br />
