USS Gerald R. Ford - Landing and Launching of Aircraft

On July 28, 2017, a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter became the
 first fixed-wing airplane to land on and launch from the Navy’s new 
aircraft carrier USS <em>Gerald R. Ford</em>.<br />
<br />

The Super Hornet belonged to <span class="st">Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23, based at</span> Patuxent River in Maryland. Lt. Cmdr. Jamie Struck, call sign “Coach,” flew the two-seat fighter on the historic sortie.<br />

The launch in particular is significant because, until recently, the Navy wasn’t sure <em>Ford</em>‘s
 catapult would work properly. The July 28 takeoff could help to restore
 some confidence in the system. “I get chills when I think of the 
millions of hours of work it took to engineer, develop and manufacture 
this ship and its revolutionary systems,” Struck <a href="http://www.navair.navy.mil/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.NAVAIRNewsStory&id=6600">said</a> in a Navy release.<br />
<br />

<em>Ford</em> is the first carrier to feature an electromagnetic catapult instead of a traditional steam catapult. The <span class="st">Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System is more compact, reliable and flexible than the older-style catapult design is.</span><br />
<br />

“The launching system is designed to expand the operational capability of <em>Ford</em>-class
 carriers, providing the Navy with capability for launching all current 
and future carrier air wing platforms — lightweight unmanned to heavy 
strike fighters,” the Navy <a href="http://www.navair.navy.mil/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.NAVAIRNewsStory&id=6596">explained</a> in a release.<br />

But in 2014, the Navy discovered that EMALS, designed by General 
Atomics, puts too much stress on warplanes in their heaviest 
configurations — including Super Hornets carrying external fuel tanks.<br />

Pres. Donald Trump famously mocked EMALS. “It sounded bad to me,” Trump <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2017/05/11/you-have-to-be-albert-einstein-to-figure-it-out-trump-targets-the-navys-new-aircraft-catapult/?utm_term=.e8043c1df9e1">said</a> during a May 2017 speech aboard <em>Ford</em>. “Digital. They have digital. What is digital? And it’s very complicated, you have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out.”<br />

“And I said — and now they want to buy more aircraft carriers. I said
 what system are you going to be — ‘Sir, we’re staying with digital.’ I 
said, ‘No you’re not. [We’re] going to God-damned steam,’ the digital 
costs hundreds of millions of dollars more money and it’s no good.”<br />
<br />

But the Navy stood by EMALS. “We were confident since the day that 
the issue was uncovered that it was solvable,” George Sulich, EMALS 
integrated program team lead, said in a Navy release. “The beauty of the
 system is that issues such as these can be accomplished with software 
updates instead of major hardware changes to machinery.”<br />
<br />

Sure enough, the Navy tweaked EMALS’s software and conducted 71 test 
launches on land with VX-23 Super Hornets carrying 480-gallon fuel tanks
 under their wings. The tests proved the fighter “can launch without 
exceeding stress limits on the aircraft,” the Navy reported on July 24, 
2017.<br />
<br />

Four days later, the Super Hornet launched from <em>Ford</em>. That 
takeoff involved an F/A-18F without wing tanks — in other words, in a 
light configuration. The Navy plans on waiting until 2019 — when <em>Ford</em> will be preparing for her first deployment — to update the ship’s EMALS with the newly-written code allowing heavier launches.<br />

The 
65,000 ton vessel, which will be the UK’s first aircraft carrier since 
the HMS Ark Royal was scrapped in 2010, is due to leave the shipyard at 
Rosyth, Scotland, on Monday.<br />

Eleven tugs will be needed to maneuver the vessel, which is as long as three football fields.<br />
She will have to squeeze into the estuary through the narrow exit from her dock.<br />
Once
 free, she will wait for low tide and have her tallest masts and 
antennae stripped down to pass under the Forth bridges, before making 
her way to the open sea under her own power.<br />
Despite the upcoming trials, the carrier is not expected to be ready for action for several years.<br />
A sister carrier, the HMS Prince Of Wales, is also under construction.<br />

 such high praise, the carrier project has been battered by waves of 
criticism, with one senior military figure anonymously telling the

The source said that by developing carriers the UK was “<i>moving in the direction absolutely contrary to strategic developments of our time,</i>” seeing how current wars are fought with drones and special forces.<br />
There
 are also concerns over whether there will be enough American-made F-35

China launches its 1st domestically-built aircraft carrier

China has transferred its first indigenously built aircraft carrier into
 the water, expanding its fleet to two such vessels. The ceremony, held 
amid heightened tensions in the region, almost coincided with the US 
deployment of THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea.
<br />
The new carrier, which name is yet to be revealed, was launched on 
Wednesday morning in northeast China’s Dalian shipyard in Liaoning 
Province, Xinhua <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-04/26/c_136236857.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">reported.</a><br />
The pride of China's naval engineering was transferred from dry dock 
into the water at a launch ceremony that started at about 9am at the 
Dalian shipyard of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, the news agency
 noted.<br />

The new carrier is slightly larger than the Liaoning, China’s first 
aircraft carrier, constructed by the Soviet Union as a Kuznetsov-class 
aircraft carrier and refitted by the Chinese. The new carrier weighs 
70,000 tons and is 315 meters long and 75 meters wide, South China 
Morning Post reported.<br />
The carrier, however, is not expected to 
fully enter service until 2020, as it will reportedly take years to 
install all the equipment and conduct the necessary tests and trials.<br />
<br />
The
 launch of the new vessel which has been referred to as CV-17 comes amid
 renewed tensions between North Korea and the United States in the 
region amid Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.<br />
Photos of 
the new vessel indicate that the ship has a ski jump and angled flight 
deck. Earlier reports also suggested that the ship’s hangars were built 
large enough to accommodate between 28 to 36 aircraft onboard.<br />

The new ship was rolled out on the same day that the US Army began 
installing the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system onto a
 golf course in Seongju, South Korea, as a response to the North Korean 
threat.<br />

Beijing
 has repeatedly spoken out against THAAD over fears that it will 
undermine its own deterrence capabilities, and previously urged Seoul 
and Washington to reconsider their plans.<br />

Catapult launch systems will mean the new 
carriers can deploy three aircraft a minute, like its American 
equivalent, rather than one per minute currently.</div>

Those
 aircraft will be MiG-29K jets, Russia's current carrier-based fighter, 
and a specially modified naval version of the new Sukhoi PAK FA, also 
known by its prototype name T-50.</div>

The 
new Russian craft could cost between $6.1billion and $17.5billion to 
manufacture, though the true cost will be higher, as they will require a
 lot of new infrastructure to be built before they can operate. </div>

 the moment Russia has only one aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov,
 which was built under the Soviets and launched in 1985.</div>

Operation
 of the USS Gerald R. Ford has been long-awaited. The planning and 
construction phases began more than a decade ago, beginning with the 
first contract award in May 2004. Steel was first cut in 2005, and a 
keel-laying ceremony took place in November 2009, according to the Navy 
Times. The aircraft carrier was first floated in October 2013, and was 
christened by Susan Ford, the daughter of President Gerald R. Ford, in 
November 2013.<br /><br />Construction of the aircraft carrier was supposed 
to be completed by September 2015, but issues with its advanced systems 
and technology – including aircraft landing equipment and power 
generation – caused delays. <br />The ship’s delivery date has been 
pushed back multiple times. One of those delays took place last year, 
when its electricity-generating main turbines were found to have 
mechanical problems.<br />The delays also prompted budget overruns. 
The ship’s construction cost came in at a final total of $12.9 billion –
 a whopping $2.4 billion more than was estimated prior to its planned 
September 2015 completion date.</div>

 Saturday deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford marks the first time in 
42 years that the Navy has deployed a new class of aircraft carrier. The
 last time such an event took place was in March 1975, when the USS

China’s systems to launch and catch 
carrier-based aircraft are more advanced than those designed for the 
new generation of US supercarriers, according to a Chinese expert in 
the technology.</div>

Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, a top engineer working 
on the project, said on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress 
on Monday that China had made breakthroughs in its advanced arresting 
gear (AAG) system designed to retrieve aircraft at sea, while the US had

Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie said Ma had made “a certain advances” in AAG technology, compared with the US.</div>

said the US AAG engineers had underestimated the difficulty of 
developing the technology and China may have been able to take note of 
this to make progress.</div>

 in service today. Just keeping a small boat alive in salt water that 
long takes some work, but when the ship is over 1,000 feet long the 
scale of maintained projects is just incredible.<br />

This clip from the show <em>Dry Dock </em>takes us through just a few elements of a year-long maintenance regiment that the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimitz-class_aircraft_carrier" target="_blank">U.S.S. </a><em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimitz-class_aircraft_carrier" target="_blank">Nimitz</a> </em>was
 put through a few years ago before returning to duty. When it is 
active, the ship is home to over 3,000 servicemen and women and some 60

 pair of nuclear reactors and of course cleaning the aircraft-catching 
cables, a lot of these chores are the same things your uncle dreads when

 due to its spiraling cost, the state-of-the-art carrier has provoked 
strong criticism from some quarters, including the government's own 
watchdogs.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">In
 2013, the Government Accountability Office wrote: 'Key ship systems 
face reliability shortfalls that the Navy does not expect to resolve 
until many years after [Ford] commissioning, which will limit the ship’s
 mission effectiveness during initial deployments and likely increase 
costs to the government.'</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">It
 added: 'The Navy faces technical, design, and construction challenges 
to completing Gerald R. Ford that have led to significant cost 
increases.'</span></div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">There
 are two other ships in the Ford class: the USS John F. Kennedy and a 
new USS Enterprise - expected to be commissioned in 2020 and 2025 
respectively. The total cost for the three vessels is estimated to be 
more than $43 billion. </span></div>
