Molten Salt Nuclear Reactor that will make nuclear as cheap as natural gas passes first certification hurdle

transformative energy technology that is now one step closer to making a
 major contribution to the world’s growing demand for low-cost, clean 
and reliable energy.”<br />
<br />

The Vendor review involves three phases:<br />
1. a pre-licensing assessment of compliance with regulatory requirements;<br />
2. an assessment of any potential fundamental barriers to licensing; and<br />
3. a follow-up phase allowing the vendor to respond to findings from the second phase.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.terrestrialenergy.com/" target="blank">Terrestrial
 Energy’s Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) is designed to meet the 
rapidly rising demand for breakthrough energy technologies that</a> can 
deliver clean, scalable, and cost-competitive heat and power to displace
 fossil-fuel combustion starting in the 2020s. The IMSR® is a 
fundamentally different reactor. It employs advanced molten-salt 
technology, which creates a far superior system to harness clean 
bountiful energy of the atom simply, safely and economically.<br />
<br />

<br />
IMSR® power plants are far simpler to build and operate than 
conventional nuclear power plants. They cost less than USD $1 billion, 
can be built within 4 years with much lower project risk, and can be 
financed by ordinary means.<br />
<br />

<br />
IMSR® power plants are low-risk and cost-competitive clean-energy 
alternatives in North American and many other markets. In electric-power
 markets, IMSR® plants can dispatch power at under USD $50 per MWh 
(levelized cost), cost-competitive with NGCC for power generation, and 
probably more so with a volatility-adjusted price of natural gas; they 
are more cost-competitive when compared to coal. In industrial heat 
markets, IMSR® plants are also cost-competitive with natural gas; they 
have an in-furnace cost of less that USD $6 per MMBtu, within USD $1 of 
current in-furnace natural gas costs.<br />
<br />

Using advanced molten salt reactor technology, IMSR® power plants are
 simpler than the Conventional Reactor power plants in the market today,
 which are pressurized-water reactors. IMSR® power plants are smaller, 
and with modular design and construction, can be built within 4 years 
and financed by ordinary means. IMSR® power plants will be 
cost-competitive with fossil fuels even in the absence of CO2 emission 
penalties.<br />
<br />

Molten salt reactors use fuel dissolved in a molten fluoride or 
chloride salt which functions as both the reactor’s fuel and its 
coolant. This means that such a reactor could not suffer from a loss of 
coolant leading to a meltdown. Terrestrial’s IMSR integrates the primary
 reactor components, including primary heat exchangers, to a secondary 
clean salt circuit, in a sealed and replaceable core vessel. It is 
designed as a modular reactor for factory fabrication, and could be used
 for electricity production and industrial process heat generation.<br />
<br />

Earlier this year, Terrestrial Energy began a feasibility study for 
the siting of the first commercial IMSR at Canadian Nuclear 
Laboratories’ (CNL) Chalk River site. It has also said it intends to 
submit an application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a 
design certification or construction permit in late 2019.<br />
<br />

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has completed the first
 phase of a vendor design review of Terrestrial Energy Inc’s Integrated 
Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR). <br />

The CNSC announced yesterday that, based on the documentation 
submitted by Terrestrial Energy, the company had demonstrated an 
understanding of the regulator’s requirements applicable to the design 
and safety analysis of the 400 MWt IMSR, known as IMSR400. The company 
has also demonstrated its intent to comply with CNSC regulatory 
requirements and expectations for NPPs, and is integrating Fukushima 
lessons learned into IMSR design provisions, the regulator said.<br />
<br />

Terrestrial Energy will need to undertake additional work to address 
some of the review’s findings, including the need to establish robust 
quality-assured processes for design and safety analysis activities.<br />

Several features are currently at the conceptual level of design and 
will require additional technical information, based on research and 
development and design activities, the CNSC said, while some design 
features will need further consideration because of the novel design of 
the IMSR400.<br />
<br />

Further work will be needed to predict core behaviour in the presence
 of damaged core components – although the CNSC acknowledges that the 
definition of core damage as set out in current regulations, which were 
drawn up based on operating experience from water-cooled reactors, may 
not be applicable to the IMSR design.<br />
<br />
Terrestrial Energy will also be 
required to complete further safety analysis work relating to core 
damage, and to provide further information on how it will validate 
predictions of performance as the reactor ages.<br />

In the second phase of the review, Terrestrial Energy will also be 
required to demonstrate that human factors in design have been 
appropriately addressed in its operability and maintainability programs,
 which are currently under development.<br />
<br />

The IMSR® is a liquid-fuel reactor system, rather than a solid-fuel 
system, as is used exclusively in conventional reactors. The IMSR® 
dissipates heat using a molten salt. Salts are thermally stable and 
excellent heat-transfer fluids, ideal for dissipating heat from the 
fission process simply and safely. In a molten salt reactor (MSR), salt 
provides a fluid medium to carry a nuclear fuel—in the case of the 
IMSR®, a low-enriched-uranium fluoride salt.<br />
<br />
The IMSR® provides simple, 
safe, and natural mechanisms for heat dissipation. It is a far superior 
system for the simple passive dissipation of fission heat. The use of a 
molten salt is at the heart of many engineering and commercial virtues 
of the IMSR®.<br />
<br />

An IMSR® power plant generates 400 MWth of thermal energy (190 MWe) 
with a thermal -spectrum, graphite-moderated, molten-fluoride-salt 
reactor system, fueled by low-enriched uranium (less than 5% 235U). It 
incorporates the approach to MSR design and operation researched, 
demonstrated and proven by the ARE and MSRE test reactors at Oak Ridge 
National Laboratory (ORNL); these were further developed under the DMSR 
program.<br />
<br />

The IMSR® improves upon the earlier ORNL MSR designs through various 
innovations that are pragmatic and commercial. The key challenge to MSR 
commercialization is graphite’s limited lifetime in a reactor core, 
which is a function of reactor power. Commercial power reactors require 
high core energy densities to be economical, but high power densities 
significantly reduce the lifetime of the graphite moderator requiring 
its replacement; this is challenging to do simply, safely and 
economically in an industrial environment.<br />
<br />
The key IMSR® innovation is 
an elegant solution to this challenge – the integration of the primary 
reactor components, including the graphite moderator, into a sealed and 
replaceable reactor core, the IMSR® Core-unit, which has an operating 
lifetime of 7 years. The IMSR® Core-unit is simple and safe to replace, 
it supports high utility factors for IMSR® power plants and high capital
 efficiency. It also ensures that the materials’ lifetime requirements 
of all other reactor core components are met; the challenge of achieving
 these requirements is often cited as an impediment to immediate 
commercialization of MSRs. The result is a power plant that delivers the
 combination of high energy output, simplicity and ease of operation, 
and cost-competitiveness essential for widespread commercial deployment.

Chinese companies were out in force at <a href="https://www.shephardmedia.com/news/imps-news/ds-2017-chinese-floats-whole-submarine-family-expo/" target="_blank"><b>Defense & Security 2017 in Bangkok</b></a>, including the <b>China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC)</b>. Most prominent on its stand was a new family of submarines displacing 1,100t, 600t and 200t.<br />

Scale models of these submarines were displayed alongside a model of the 2,550t <a class="externalLink" href="https://www.shephardmedia.com/news/training-simulation/milsim-asia-2017-thais-train-submarine-simulator/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">S26T</a> (pictured above) currently being built for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) under a $385 million order lodged in May.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the most interesting aspect was a video indicating countries currently interested in procuring Chinese submarines. <b>In
 addition to Bangladesh and Pakistan that have already ordered Chinese 
platforms, those named by CSOC as interested parties are Algeria, Cuba, 
Egypt, Libya, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Venezuela.</b><br />
<br />
In a rare move from a state-owned Chinese corporation, a lot of 
specifications about this family of submarines were available. This 
relative openness, as well as the revelation of a family range spanning 
200t to more than 2,500t, shows China is serious about gaining greater 
export clients for its underwater technology.<br />
<br />
<b>The S26T, it was revealed, is <i>customised for the RTN</i> though based on the <i>Yuan</i>
 class (Type 041) designed for the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It 
measures 77.7m long, has an 8.6m beam, height of 9.2m and can dive 300m 
deep.</b><br />
<br />
The type’s maximum speed is 17kt and it can swim submerged for 260nm at 
80% battery capacity. Its range using air-independent propulsion (AIP) 
is 768nm or 20 days. Meanwhile, its maximum range for mixed AIP and 
diesel-electric travel is 2,000nm or 65 days.<br />
<br />
The teardrop-shaped hull accommodates 38 crew in 46 available berths. 
The boat is divided into six compartments, and employs a cross-stern 
rudder and bow hydroplanes. An optronic mast is fitted on the sail, 
while the type can launch anti-ship missiles.<br />
<br />
It will still take some time for China to construct the submarine for 
Thailand, with delivery expected in 2023. The RTN will eventually 
receive three submarines, with the budget allowing only one to be 
ordered at a time.<br />
<br />
Continuing down in scale, the 1,100t submarine is 60m long, 5.6m wide 
and 6.8m high. Its speed is listed as 15kt, with a submerged AIP range 
of 800nm and mixed range of 3,000nm. It can dive 200m deep and carry 18 
crew for up to 30 days. It carries ten torpedoes.<br />
<br />
Moving further down in scale, the 600t conventional submarine is 50m 
long, 4.5m wide and 5.6m high. It travels at a top speed of 15kt with an
 AIP range of 400nm and submerged mixed range of 2,000nm. The 600t boat 
has a crew of 15 and can sustain a 20-day journey.<br />

Finally, the MS200 is a mini-submarine of 200t displacement. Measuring 
30m long, 3.6m wide and 4.4m high, it is designed for covert missions. 
It operates with a crew of six and can carry eight special forces operatives.<br />
<br />
This small submarine moves at a maximum 8kt speed and submerged range of
 120nm. Its endurance is 15 days and it can travel for up to 1,500nm 
submerged. It has two launching devices for torpedoes or mines.<br />

 years ago, the spacecraft Cassini launched from Cape Canaveral on a 
journey to uncover the secrets of Saturn and its many moons,' said 
Stafford Marquardt of Google, who is leading the project.</div>

 its mission, Cassini recorded and sent nearly half a million pictures 
back to Earth, allowing scientists to reconstruct these distant worlds 
in unprecedented detail. </div>

'Now you can visit these places—along with many other planets and moons—in Google Maps right from your computer.'</div>

The Google team worked with astronomical 
artist Björn Jónsson, who assembled the planetary maps of Europa, 
Ganymede, Rhea, and Mimas by working with imagery from NASA and the 
European Space Agency. </div>

moons and learn more about different locations on their surface. </div>

The secrets behind the construction of the oldest and only survivor of the Seven Wonders of the World have been locked within its limestone and granite walls for centuries.<br />
 But
 now archaeologists believe they have finally uncovered how Egyptians 
were able to lug millions of 2.5 ton blocks 500 miles to create the Great Pyramid of Giza .<br />
 Built
 as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu in about 2,600BC over 20 years, the 481ft 
tall structure was the largest of all the pyramids and was, until the 
Middle Ages, the tallest man-made construction on Earth.<br />

 Historians
 have long argued how 800 tonnes of material was transported some 533 
miles to Giza from Aswan every day by thousands of skilled workers.<br />
 Now the discovery of an ancient papyrus, a ceremonial boat, and a system of waterworks could finally put an end to the debate.<br />

New evidence reveals thousands of labourers transported 170,000 
tonnes of limestone along the Nile in wooden boats, held together by 
ropes, through a specially constructed system of canals.<br />
 The
 ancient scroll was discovered in the seaport Wadi Al-Jarf and it has 
given a new insight into how boats and water were used in the pyramid’s 
construction.<br />
 Written by an overseer named Merer, it reveals some
 2.3 million blocks were ferried to an inland port built just yards away
 from the base of the pyramid.<br />
 Mercer was believed to have been 
in charge of a team of 40 workmen and the scroll is the only firsthand 
account on record of how the pyramids were built.<br />

It describes in detail how the limestone casing stones were shipped downstream from Tura to Giza.<br />
 Archaeologist Mark Lehner, an Eygptologist, has also discovered a lost waterway underneath the plateau the pyramid sits upon.<br />
"We've outlined the central canal basin, which we think was the primary delivery area to the foot of the Giza Plateau," he said.<br />
 The new discoveries were revealed in Channel 4 documentary Egypt’s Great Pyramid: The New Evidence last night. <br />
 The
 documentary included another team of archaeologists who unearthed a 
ceremonial vessel designed for Khufu to command in the afterlife and 
gave new insights into the construction of boats at the time.<br />
 A team of specialists restored the wooden structure before scanning them with a 3D laser to work out how they were assembled. <br />
 The archaeologists discovered that the planks of wood were sewn together with loops of rope.<br />

King Arthur, the legendary monarch who rose to the throne by 
pulling his sword Excalibur out of a stone and ruled Britain with the 
help of the knights of the round table and the wizard Merlin may not 
have been real after all. </div>

 adventures have spawned countless books, and quite a few movies over 
the centuries; One of the most notable of these being ‘Monty Python and 
the Holy Grail,’ which details how Arthur and his merry band of buffoons
 attempt to track down the goblet, battling the Knights of Ni, frenchmen
 and, of course, a killer rabbit in the process.<br />

That film is just as factual as the fabled King himself, according to
 Miles Russell, a Senior Lecturer in Roman and Prehistoric Archaeology 
at Bournemouth University (BU), who believes Arthur was a fictional 
‘Celtic Superhero’ created in the 12th century.<br />

<strong></strong>Russell
 came to the conclusion having forensically analysed a series of 
medieval texts, including ‘A History of the Kings of Britain,’ written 
by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1136, in which the first full account of King
 Arthur appears.<br />

<em>“Geoffrey’s book itself derives from a series of myths, stories 
and bardic praise poems that go back to the first century BC, at a time 
just before Britain became part of the Roman Empire,”</em> Russell <a href="https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/news/2017-10-06/king-arthur-was-composite-celtic-superhero-archaeological-analysis-reveals">said</a> in a press release.<br />
<br />
<strong></strong><em>“By
 studying the text with a forensic eye, isolating individual tales and 
characters, it is possible to identify where the story of King Arthur 
first came from.”</em><br />
<em>“When you start to look at King Arthur 
in detail you realise that he is an amalgam of at least five separate 
characters – he never existed as an independent person at all,”</em> Russell added added.  <br />
<br />
The five characters in question are Ambrosius Aurelianus who lived in
 the late 400s, Roman general Magnus Maximus, Roman emperor Constantine 
the Great and prehistoric warlords Arvirargus and Cassivellaunus.<br />
<br />
According to Dr Russell, an extra 39 per cent of the character was 
taken from Magnus Maximus, a Roman general in Britain who usurped 
Emperor Gratian in the late fourth century.<br />

Dr Russell claims another eight per cent was drawn from Roman Emperor
 Constantine the Great and 24 per cent from Arvirargus, a legendary and 
possibly historical British King of the 1st century.<br />

The rest of the Arthur character - 12 per cent - is drawn from tribal
 chief Cassivellaunus who fought against Julius Caesar's second 
expedition in 54BC.<br />
<br />
<strong></strong><em>“Once you take all these elements of his story away, there’s actually nothing left for Arthur,”</em> Russell said. <em>“He’s
 an echo of all these other individuals – what Geoffrey of Monmouth did 
was create a Celtic superhero for his times, a character for the Britons
 to celebrate, taken from all the best bits of those individuals who 
lived before."</em><br />
<br />
Traditionally, Arthur is said to have led the British when they 
defeated an invading Saxon army at the legendary Battle of Badon 
sometime between 490AD and 516AD.<br />

But his story evolved into a magical fantasy tale, with elements such
 as the wizard Merlin, through the History of the Kings of Britain by 
12th century writer Geoffrey of Monmouth.<br />

North Korea ready to test new high range missile

 Morozov revealed Pyongyang's plans as he returned from a five-day visit
 to the hermit state - where the mood is "rather belligerent" - with a 
Russian delegation.<br />
 He claims North Korean officials gave the 
Russians mathematical calculations showing that the intercontinental 
ballistic missile could reach targets on the US west coast.<br />
 It comes just days after a CIA official revealed that Kim Jong-un's regime could launch a new missile or carry out another nuclear test next week.<br />

Morozov told the Russian state-run news agency <a href="https://ria.ru/world/20171006/1506353937.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">RIA Novosti:</a> "They are preparing for a new test of a longer-range missile.<br />
 "They
 even gave us mathematical calculations that they believe prove that 
their missile can hit the western coast of the United States."<br />
 He
 described the mood in Pyongyang as "rather belligerent", adding: "In 
the near future, they are going to carry out, as far as we understand, 
yet another launch of a missile, but this time with a longer range."<br />
 He
 was part of a Russian delegation which made an official visit to 
Pyongyang this week to discuss bilateral cooperation with the Russian 
ambassador to North Korea, the English-language state-run <a href="https://sputniknews.com/asia/201710061058012507-korea-test-missile-us-west-coast/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sputnik</a> news agency reported.<br />

 Morozov, a member of the Russian State Duma Committee on 
International Affairs, has called for a prompt intervention in the 
situation on the Korean peninsula to avoid a new war.<br />
 Earlier this week, Yong Suk Lee, the deputy assistant director of the <a href="https://twitter.com/CIA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">CIA</a>'s
 Korea Mission Center, revealed that North Korea's latest provocation 
could come on Tuesday when it celebrates the founding of the Workers' 
Party of Korea.<br />
 Many past nuclear or missile tests have coincided with mass public celebrations.<br />
 A
 test would coincide with Japan's lower house election campaigns and the
 Columbus Day holiday in the US. Given the time difference, it would be 
Monday in the US if a missile or nuclear test occurs in Pyongyang on 
Tuesday morning.<br />
<br />
Despite UN sanctions, North Korea has recently carried out an 
underground nuclear test and test-fired two missiles over northern 
Japan, with both crashing into the Pacific Ocean.<br />
 Nicholas Kristof, a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/opinion/sunday/nuclear-north-korea.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">New York Times</a>
 op-ed columnist who recently returned to Pyongyang for a visit, wrote 
that North Korea is galvanising its citizens to expect a nuclear war 
with the US.<br />
 Billboards in the capital show missiles destroying the US Capitol in Washington, DC, he added.<br />
 Pyongyang
 resident Mun Hyok-myong, a teacher, told Mr Kristof during a visit to 
an amusement park: “If we have to go to war, we won’t hesitate to 
totally destroy the United States."<br />

 which monitors Pyongyang's activities, has suggested that a North 
Korean nuclear attack on Seoul and Tokyo could kill more than two 
million people and injure nearly eight million others.<br />
 North 
Korea's state-run news agency, KCNA, reported on Friday that the 
country's National Peace Committee (NPC) has called on the US to pull 
its troops out of South Korea.<br />
 US forces have been stationed in the South since the Korean War.<br />
 The
 committee said the 64-year-old South Korea-US Status of Forces 
Agreement (SOFA) was an "aggressive and traitorous war document" 
allowing the US to control the South's army, South Korea's state-run <a href="http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/northkorea/2017/10/06/7/0401000000AEN20171006003951320F.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Yonhap News Agency</a> reported.<br />

and it has "reduced South Korea into advanced base for a nuclear war".<br />
 It added that South Koreans cannot evade a nuclear war as long as US troops are based in their country.<br />
 The
 North and South are technically still at war, as the conflict in the 
1960s ended with an armistice and no peace treaty has ever been signed.<br />
<br />
 This news comes amid a report that states North Korea
 has a terrifying biological weapons programme capable of wiping out 
tens of thousands of troops and civilians if war breaks out.<br />
 Experts
 fear the rogue state has developed and stored more than a dozen killer 
agents that could be fired into South Korea or further if Kim Jong-un ’s regime is threatened. <br />
 Among
 the illnesses it may be able to deliver by missile, bomb or 
plane-sprayer are Anthrax, Smallpox, the Plague, Botulism, Cholera, 
Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Dystentry and Typhus.<br />

forced to work without protection.<br />
 Researchers at intelligence 
company AMPLYFI teamed up with Harvard in America to harvest the dark 
web for information about Pyongyang’s 50 year-old bio-weapons programme.<br />
 Using
 an artificial intelligence tool called DataVoyant researchers mined 
840,000 websites that contained biological references and 23,000 were 
found to have links to North Korea.<br />
<br />
 In their report called North 
Korea’s Biological Weapons Program, researchers also say image analysis 
of Pyongyang’s Bio-technical Institute suggests it could “produce 
military-style batches of biological weapons - specifically anthrax.”<br />
 It
 continues: “The most recent statement by the South Korean Defence 
Ministry is that ‘North Korea has 13 types of biological weapons which 
it can weaponise withing ten days.<br />
 “And anthrax and smallpox are the likely agents it would deploy."<br />
 Meanwhile,
 the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to the International 
Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which is seeking a ban on 
nuclear arms.<br />

gravitational pulls of the sun and the moon, occur every month. But the 
bore is the strongest and most impressive on the 18th day of the eighth 
month on the lunar calendar - due to the lining up of the moon, sun and 
the earth.</div>

This year, the impressive tidal phenomenon will appear on October 7 on the Gregorian calendar.</div>

As
 the day falls three days after China's Mid-Autumn Festival, observing 
the Qiantang River tidal bore has been the traditional entertainment for
 many families. </div>

observing spot, to enjoy the thrill of the dramatic rise and fall of the
 tidal currents.</div>

A video showing last year's Qiantang River bore, shared by <a class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8cljTE1faE&feature=youtu.be" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">People's Daily Online</a><span style="margin-left: 5px; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></span> on YouTube, shows a torrent of water gushing several feet over the bank barriers and onto the viewing platforms last year. </div>

As
 the waves gather their momentum on Qiantang River, they could reach 43 
kilometres or 25 miles per hour. That's around 12 metres (39.3 feet) per
 second. </div>

 sizable tides can be as high as 10 metres (33 feet), which is nearly 
the height of three London double-decker buses stacked up. </div>

Spectators
 appeared to like the adrenaline rush as they enjoyed running away from 
the embankment at the last minute when the waves crashed onto the shore.</div>

Every
 year there are reports of casualties among spectators, but they haven't
 stopped daredevil Chinese tourists from flocking to the shore to watch 
the annual spectacle.</div>

Tidal bore is a rare tidal phenomenon, which sees a surge of waves forming on the ocean and washing inland up a river. </div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
It's
 rare because the river must be relatively shallow and it must have a 
narrow outlet to the sea for the tidal currents to gather momentum.</div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
In
 the case of Qiantang River, its tidal bores are famous because of the 
unique shape of the Hangzhou Estuary which leads the river to the East 
China Sea.</div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
The width of the 
trumpet-shaped estuary reduces from 100 kilometres (62 miles) near the 
sea to three kilometres (1.8 miles) near Haining. This means multiple 
tidal bores have to combine into one super bore  to travel up river. </div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
In
 general, tides are caused by the pull of the sun and the moon in 
relation to forces created by the spin of the earth. Highest tides occur
 when the pull of the sun and the moon are in line. </div>
<div class="mol-para-with-font">
Around the time of a full moon, the tides can be exceptionally strong and robust tidal bores are created.</div>
