WikiLeaks has released the latest instalment in the #Vault7 
series, detailing two apparent CIA malware frameworks dubbed 
‘AfterMidnight’ and ‘Assassin’ which it says target the Microsoft 
Windows platform.

The
 latest release consists of five documents detailing the two frameworks.
 ‘AfterMidnight’ allows operators to load and execute malware on a 
target machine, according to a <a href="https://wikileaks.org/vault7/#AfterMidnight" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">statement</a> from WikiLeaks.<br />
The
 malware, disguised as a self-persisting dynamic-link library (DLL), 
unique to Microsoft, executes ‘Gremlins’ – small payloads which run 
hidden on the machine subverting the functionality of software as well 
as surveying the target and exfiltration of data. A payload named 
‘AlphaGremlin’ allows operators to schedule customs tasks to be executed
 on the machine.<br />

Once installed ‘AfterMidnight’ uses a HTTPS listening port to check 
for any scheduled events. Local storage related to ‘AfterMidnight’ is 
encrypted with a key not stored on the target machine, according to a <a href="https://wikileaks.org/vault7/document/AfterMidnight_v1_0_Users_Guide/page-1/#pagination" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">user guide</a> provided in the leak.<br />

According to the leak, ‘Assassin’ is a similar type of malware to ‘AfterMidnight’. The tool’s <a href="https://wikileaks.org/vault7/document/Assassin_v1_4_Users_Guide/page-8/#pagination" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">user guide</a> describes it as <i>"an
 automated implant that provides a simple collection platform on remote 
computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system.”</i><br />
The
 tool purportedly allows operators to perform specific tasks on an 
infected computer, periodically sending intercepted information to 
listening posts. It is made up of four subsystems: 'Implant', 'Builder',
 'Command and Control', and 'Listening Post'.<br />
  <br />
The ‘Implant’ 
provides the core logic and functionality of the tool on a target 
computer. The way it’s set up determines much of how the tool will 
behave on the target computer.<br />
The ‘Builder’ arranges the Implant 
and ‘Deployment Executables’ before deployment, while the ‘Command and 
Control’ subsystem acts as an interface between the operator and the 
‘Listening Post.’<br />
The ‘Listening Post’ allows the ‘Implant’ to communicate with the subsystem through a web server.<br />
Details
 of the document’s author are revealed in instructional screenshots of 
their desktop which appear in the ‘AlphaGremlin’ user guide. The 
screenshots also show a shortcut to Pidgin, an encrypted chat program, 
along with a folder named ‘Drone.’<br />

What may or may not be Nessie can be seen floating across the famous 
Scottish lake before going out of shot, all in full view of a number of 
tourists.<br />

The new sighting was welcomed by the <a href="http://www.lochnesssightings.com/">Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register</a>, who admitted to being <i>“worried”</i>
 after the famous monster hadn’t been allegedly seen in eight months. 
Tour operators can rejoice thanks to Jones’ footage, which looks 
remarkably similar to the famous 1934 ‘Surgeon’s Photograph’, deemed to 
be a hoax.<br />

observe the curvature of the earth and fly at an altitude of around

The brainchild of pilot Raphael Domjan, the solar powered plane took 
off from an airfield in Payerne, Switzerland, on Friday morning.<br />
Flown by test pilot Damian Hischier, the aircraft reached a height of around 304 meters in what was its first ever flight, <a href="https://www.afp.com/en/news/2265/stratospheric-solar-plane-makes-first-test-flight">AFP</a> reports.<br />

Domjan told AFP that the ultimate goal of SolarStratos is to show 
people that “it is possible to go beyond what fossil fuels offer.”<br />
In
 the future, the eco-adventure company hope to be able to open up 
stratospheric flights to the public, which will require passengers to 
don an astronaut’s suit and helmet due to the fact that the lightweight 
aircraft is not pressurized.<br />
<b><br /></b>
Swiss
 entrepreneur Bertrand Piccard, who is also pursuing clean energy 
aviation with the Solar Impulse solar plane, paid tribute to 
SolarStratos online.<br />
Piccard’s Solar Impulse 2 aircraft touched down in Dubai last year to complete a round-the-world trip without using a single drop of fuel.<br />

'‎Nuclear Fusion Evangelist' from Houston has released technical

 Lockheed Martin claimed in 2014 that the reactor would weigh 20 tons, 
the new specification shows that it will weigh 2,000 tons.</div>

In terms of size, it is seven metres in diameter, and 18 metres long – similar in size to a  submarine nuclear fission reactor.</div>

Footage
 from inside the country is usually highly controlled, with most of what
 we see consisting of highly stage-managed military parades and weapons 
tests.<br />
However, the <a href="http://nk.scenethere.com/#third-scene&uid=scene-34">new 360 tour</a> allows viewers to explore Pyongyang at their own pace, getting a feel of what everyday life is like for urban North Koreans.<br />

The tour was created by Marcus Olsson, the CEO of Swedish startup SceneThere which produces custom 360-degree videos.<br />
<i>“SceneThere’s
 technology links 360 videos from different places together into a ‘real
 virtual world’, where you as a viewer can choose your point of view,”</i> the company’s website <a href="https://www.scenethere.com/">says</a>.<br />
The
 Pyongyang tour offers users the chance to roam around the city’s 
landmarks. These include Mansu Hill, where enormous statues of Kim 
Il-sung and Kim Jong-Il overlook the city, as well as Pyongyang Hotel, 
where you can check out the interior. The tour reveals some surprising 
sights such as children rollerblading in Kim Il-sung Square.<br />
'Tourists' can click the blue dots on their screens to hop from one landmark to another.<br />
<br />
Olsson recorded the footage in September 2016, during a visit to North Korea to talk to start-ups about entrepreneurship.<br />
<i>"I didn't know much about North Korea and all I could find online were videos of parades or official footage from the regime,"</i> Olsson <a href="http://mashable.com/2017/05/04/north-korea-vr-pyongyang/#3zdU6H9tJ5qO">said</a> to Mashable. <i>"So I brought my 360 cameras with the idea of making it into a VR in our platform.”</i><br />
The
 tour features a voiceover from Andray Abrahamian, a North Korean 
scholar based in the UK. Abrahamian provides interesting historical, 
political and cultural information about the sites you encounter on the 
tour.<br />
Visitors to North Korea report near-constant surveillance 
from tour guides. Tourists’ experiences are also carefully monitored to 
ensure nothing that could tarnish the state’s reputation is seen.<br />

Some would argue the tour is another example of carefully curated 
propaganda from the North Korean government. Indeed, Olsson clarifies 
that the tour isn’t an investigative journalism project.<br />
<i>“We were never alone when filming,”</i> he revealed. <i>"We were also prevented from filming an acrobatic show in a circus.”</i><br />
"I cannot guarantee that I was given full freedom," he told <a href="http://www.wired.co.uk/article/north-korea-vr">Wired</a>.
 "But since I was invited as a lecturer, I was able to film in a way 
that would not have been possible with a tourist group, or as naturally 
unstaged as if I would had been a journalist.”<br />

Recently,
 a journalist from Finland’s Yle news agency managed to film the North 
Korean capital uninhibited. Running the risk of being discovered by the 
state’s strict security regime, journalist Mika Makelainen recorded rare
 footage of Pyongyang on a normal day, without any of the pomp of a 
military parade and free from the careful curation of a tour guide.<br />

A two-seat version of the JF-17/FC-1 Thunder, a warplane jointly 
produced by Pakistan and China, took off for its maiden flight on April 
27, 2017. The idea behind the project is to develop a relatively 
inexpensive fighter at around $25 million per copy that can compete with
 the U.S.-made F-16 Fighting Falcon.<br />

Pakistan already has dozens of single-seat JF-17s and has used them 
in combat, targeting insurgents in Waziristan. The Chendu-Pakistan 
Aeronautical Complex consortium responsible for the jet has secured 
limited orders in Myanmar and Nigeria.<br />

<br />

The Thunder 
has better wings, a more modern Russian-designed RD-93 engine and a 
larger nose which can fit China’s KLJ-7 fire-control radar. It doesn’t 
have any stealth capability, but it’s maneuverable, fearsome—when 
equipped with beyond-visual-range anti-air and anti-ship missiles—and 
it’s cheap.<br />
<br />
There are some differences apparent with the two-seat version, the 
JF-17B. It is porpoise-shaped owing to an extra fuel tank in the dorsal 
spine. The vertical stabilizer is larger and shallower, as <a href="http://www.janes.com/article/69915/twin-seat-jf-17b-fc-1b-fighter-makes-first-flight">IHS Jane’s pointed out</a>, and the overall plane appears to have a slightly longer length.<br />
  <br />
Most likely, the JF-17B will be primarily flown as a trainer with an 
instructor riding in the back. But the tandem-seat variant opens up the 
possibility of adding a dedicated navigator, radar intercept officer or 
weapons officer similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle or F/A-18F Super 
Hornet.<br />
<br />

Twin seats are not strictly necessary in modern fighters, but they 
can free up workload for surveillance, electronic warfare and attack 
missions. Additionally, an extra officer aboard can help in air-to-air 
dogfighting by providing an extra set of eyes.<br />
Mainly, it’s functional and not too expensive—and it’s <em>not American</em>
 or dependent on supply chains extending into the United States. That’s 
important for Pakistan which has been trying to wean itself off 
dependence on U.S. military support.<br />

Other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America may look to the 
JF-17 as a practical warplane for the non-aligned world, or at least an 
affordable one. Now there’s a two-seat version to tag along.<br />
