If you’ve never imagined what the devastating effects of nuclear fallout would look like, click any dot on <a href="http://futureoflife.org/us-nuclear-targets/" target="_blank">this map</a>.<br />
<a href="http://futureoflife.org/" target="_blank">Future of Life Institute (FLI)</a>,
 a volunteer-run research group, has teamed up with Alex Wellerstein, a 
historian of science, to create interactive maps that visualizes the 
apocalyptic effects of a nuclear exchange between the US and Russia. 
Both countries currently possess around <a href="http://www.ploughshares.org/world-nuclear-stockpile-report" target="_blank">93 percent of the world’s arsenal</a>.<br />

The map’s data was pulled from <a href="http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-us-declassifies-its-1959-list-of-cold-war-targets-for-nuclear-annihilation-2" target="_blank">a declassified list of US nuclear targets</a> from 1956. Published by the National Security Archives <a href="https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/nukevault/ebb538-Cold-War-Nuclear-Target-List-Declassified-First-Ever/" target="_blank">in 2015</a>, the list comprises a whopping 1,100 nuclear targets across China, Eastern Europe, Russia, and North Korea.<br />
But
 FLI wants to ensure its predictions are as realistic as possible, so 
Wellerstein was also asked to simulate the effects of nuclear fallout 
when the size of the bomb as well as weather conditions are factored 
into the equation.<br />
Given the volatility of the weather, FLI states
 that a bomb dropped near one country’s border on the wrong day could 
cause neighbouring country’s people—who weren’t the target—to suffer the
 effects of nuclear fallout.<br />

This
 second map depicts what would happen if all 1,100 targets were hit by 
nuclear bombs varying from 50 kt to 10,000 kt in size on 29 April 2016. 
The map shows the local weather patterns on that day pushing the fallout
 further away from the target.<br />
Next up, FLI considers the effects 
of fallout, if the bombs were dropped on three consecutive days: 29 
April, 30 April, and 1 May 2016. This map shows how weather conditions 
would make a 100 kt bomb send nuclear fallout to countries like Denmark,
 Germany, and Finland.<br />
As the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0403-mcmanus-nuclear-danger-20160403-column.html" target="_blank">world’s nuclear arms race</a>
 shows no signs of slowing down, by visualising these scenarios, FLI 
wants to both remind us all of the ongoing threat of nuclear weapons, 
and to make governments around the world—especially the <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/politics/the-nine-countries-that-have-nuclear-weapons-a6798756.html" target="_blank">nine nuclear nations</a>—think critically about their need to continue stockpiling nukes.<br />

Unfortunately, FLI states <a href="http://futureoflife.org/us-nuclear-targets/" target="_blank">in a post</a>
 that while today’s nuclear targets list is classified, it probably 
looks much the same as it did back in 1956. The US has around “<a href="http://fas.org/issues/nuclear-weapons/status-world-nuclear-forces/" target="_blank">1,900 nuclear warheads deployed</a>
 on missiles and bombers (with thousands more on reserve), ready to be 
launched at a moment’s notice and able to hit their targets within 30 
minutes,” according to FLI’s statement.<br />
Worse, technological progress has made today’s nuclear bombs <a href="http://www.cnduk.org/campaigns/global-abolition/effects-of-nuclear-weapons" target="_blank">deadlier</a> than either of the two bombs that decimated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. <br />
So in the event of an accidental or purposeful nuclear war, FLI points out that a “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_winter" target="_blank">nuclear winter”</a>—when
 winds spread vast amounts of soot across the stratosphere, blocking the
 sun, and making temperatures drop—will likely annihilate most 
Earthlings.<br />
We're <a href="http://thebulletin.org/press-release/doomsday-clock-hands-remain-unchanged-despite-iran-deal-and-paris-talks9122" target="_blank">still three minutes from midnight</a>, but with interactive tools like these maps we can maybe, hopefully nudge back the clock.<br />

The destructive power of nuclear bombs has been seared into our collective memory, thanks to archival images of the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There’s the blast itself, and then all the radioactive fallout to contend with. A new interactive map shows what the damage from fallout would be if nuclear bombs were dropped on target cities today.  <br />

It’s the result of a collaboration between the <a href="http://futureoflife.org/background/us-nuclear-targets/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Future of Life Institute</a>
 (FLI)—a volunteer organization dedicated to decreasing existential 
threats to the human race co-founded by MIT physicist Max Tegmark—and 
Alex Wellerstein, a science historian at the Stevens Institute for 
Technology in New Jersey <a href="http://io9.gizmodo.com/5887685/nukemap-allows-you-to-drop-famous-bombs-all-over-google-maps" rel="noopener" target="_blank">who developed</a> the hugely popular <a href="http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">NUKEMAP</a> a few years ago. (Wellerstein was also the technical consultant for the stellar—and <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/manhattan-canceled-two-seasons-at-861770" rel="noopener" target="_blank">tragically cancelled</a>—TV series, <em><a href="http://io9.gizmodo.com/manhattan-is-the-best-tv-show-that-hardly-anybody-is-wa-1734577513" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Manhattan</a></em>.)<br />

A few months ago, the <a href="https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/nukevault/ebb538-Cold-War-Nuclear-Target-List-Declassified-First-Ever/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">National Security Archive</a> released a 1956 US <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/23/us/politics/1950s-us-nuclear-target-list-offers-chilling-insight.html" rel="noopener" target="_blank">list of 1,100 nuclear targets</a> in the Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, China, and North Korea. FLI <a href="http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2016/05/09/mapping-us-nuclear-war-plan-1956/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">digitized the entire dataset</a>,
 and approached Wellerstein about adapting NUKEMAP to the digitized 
targets. He realized he could use the new data to model nuclear fallout

Wellerstein ran two equally terrifying scenarios. First, he wondered 
what would have happened if bombs were dropped on all 1,100 targets on a
 single day: April 29, 2016. Second, he simulated how the direction of 
the radioactive fallout would change if bombs had been dropped on those 
targets on three consecutive days (April 29, April 30, and May 1, 2016).<br />

There are many different factors that influence the extent of nuclear
 fallout, notably weather conditions and the size of the bomb. 
Wellerstein was able to draw on data from <a href="http://openweathermap.org/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">OpenWeatherMap</a>
 to give his model realistic weather conditions on the days in question.
 But it also matters if the bomb detonates high in the air or on the 
ground; with the former, there is far less downwind fallout.<br />
<br />

“This is because the fallout that makes the distinctive, 
high-radiation plume downwind of the weapon is largely made up of dirt 
or debris particles that have been sucked up into the radioactive 
fireball, and ‘fall out’ rather soon (within a few hours) after the 
blast,” Wellerstein told Gizmodo. “If the fireball avoids vaporizing 
dirt or debris, the radioactive products (the remains of the split 
atoms) stay hot and light longer, and thus in the upper atmosphere 
longer. They have longer to decay before they fall to the Earth, so the 
really radioactive stuff ‘burns out’ sooner and diffuses over a larger 
area.”<br />

All the heavy fallout plumes in his visualization assume surface 
bursts, when in reality, there would likely be a mix of surface and 
airbursts, depending on the target. Bunkers or airfields, for instance, 
need heavier pressure to destroy, so those targets would probably 
require surface bursts. In contrast, homes and civilian buildings 
wouldn’t needed as much pressure, so airbursts would suffice for those 
kinds of targets.<br />

There would also probably be more than one nuclear bomb per target in
 reality, since the military would expect that not every bomb would 
reach its target. NUKEMAP’s estimator assumes single detonations. So the
 really large casualty estimates in particular should be taken with a 
grain of salt, since there is likely to be some double counting of 
victims. But it’s probably a good ballpark figure if you add in 
longer-term casualties from fallout and the destruction of crucial 
infrastructures.<br />
<br />

Those caveats aside, Wellerstein thinks the project still manages to 
illustrate the scope and magnitude of nuclear fallout from bombs dropped
 on those targets. Lest you think this is just an academic exercise: the
 declassified 1956 list of targets probably isn’t much different from 
the current US list, <a href="http://futureoflife.org/us-nuclear-targets" rel="noopener" target="_blank">according to the FLI</a>.
 And while most nuclear nations agree that less than 300 nuclear weapons
 are sufficient to achieve deterrence, the US alone has about 1900 
warheads ready for deployment within 30 minutes. Russia’s not far 
behind. The threat of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_winter" rel="noopener" target="_blank">nuclear winter</a> is closer than you might think.<br />

“Despite the fact that nuclear weapons issues are in the newspaper 
almost daily, for most Americans they have sunk into the background of 
things,” said Wellerstein. “A lot of this happened when the Cold War 
ended and we all congratulated ourselves on ‘winning.’ But the weapons 
have stuck around. I think people are starting to remember that, bit by 
bit. I like to think my work is playing a small part in that.”<br />

<b>The Trophy 
Active Protection System.</b><br />

Years ago, Israeli defense outfit Rafael developed
 the equivalent of a “bubble shield” for military vehicles. The Trophy 
Active Protection System basically blasts incoming missiles into 
oblivion with a turreted shotgun. </div>
<div class="first-text">
Now this tech is finally running on 
American M1 Abrams tanks and Stryker armored vehicles.</div>

Active protection systems like Trophy are increasingly important in 
asymmetrical wars like the United States has tended to fight over the 
past few decades. Tanks can cost millions of dollars, are stuffed with 
actual, living humans, and are covered in many layers of the toughest 
armor known to humanity, but some rocket-propelled grenades can slice 
through them like a hot knife through butter.<br />
<br />

That’s a problem. But if a tank could stop the RPG from getting close
 before it made a contact, it could go a long way towards increasing its
 own survivability. That’s how systems like Trophy work:<br />

The Trophy is a radar rigged paired with shotgun-like weapons that 
destroy projectiles moving toward itself. It has conceptually been 
around for over a decade, but we’ve only seen it in action in the field within the last couple years.<br />
<br />
Trophy is completely automated and capable of responding to an 
incoming projectile much faster than a human could, even at close range.<br />

And it does seem to actually work. Back in 2014, video emerged of an 
RPG being fired at an Israeli Merkava Mk IV tank during one of the 
country’s many conflicts with Gaza, and the Trophy system was seen 
easily swatting the RPG out of the sky:<br />

Coupled with electronic jamming systems, it seems to work pretty well.<br />

Lt. Gen. Robert Walsh, deputy commandant for combat development and integration, explained in a <a href="https://news.usni.org/2016/04/14/walsh-marines-may-protect-tanks-with-active-and-ew-protection-systems-much-like-ship-self-defense" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><em>USNI</em></a> report that testing is finally about to begin on American armor, after years of deployment in other countries:<br />

To that end, the Marine Corps is partnering with the Army
 to test out the Israeli Trophy Active Protection System (APS). The Army
 is leasing four systems and will experiment with their Stryker combat 
vehicle and M1A2 tanks. The Marine Corps is currently modifying some of 
its M1A1 tanks to install mounts for the Trophy system, and the service 
will later work with the Army to test the protective system on the 
Marine tanks against anti-tank guided missiles and RPGs, he told USNI 
News after the hearing. </blockquote>
The United States Navy already uses technology on its warships using 
similar ideas, Walsh explained, but the issue with land vehicles is even
 more complicated.<br />

Weapon systems like tanks and Stryker armored personnel carriers are –
 strangely enough I know – stuck to land. And because of that, they’re 
limited in how big they can be and how heavy they can be. As Walsh 
touched upon in the <em>USNI </em>report, you can’t just keep slapping 
more and more armor onto them. Either they become too unwieldy to use in
 battlefield environments, bogged down with overtaxed engines and 
infrastructure, or they become more and more expensive, with no 
guarantee that the armor will be able to stop current-generation 
projectiles, let alone next-generation ones.<br />

That’s where countermeasure systems like Trophy come in to play. In a
 perfect world, a vehicle equipped with such a system wouldn’t need any 
hard armor. The incoming artillery shells, missiles, and 
rocket-propelled grenades would never even touch the vehicle.<br />

As it stands, the Army will reportedly test four such systems in 
Stryker vehicles and M1A2 tanks while the Marines will modify some of 
their own M1A1 tanks to mount the Trophy system.<br />

The Stryker is a 19-ton eight-wheeled fighting machine that comes in 
personnel-carrying, reconnaissance, command, firefighting, medical 
evacuation, and various weapon-centric configurations. <em><a href="http://www.military.com/equipment/m1126-stryker-combat-vehicle" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Military.com</a> </em>says the U.S. Army operates more than 2,000 of them.<br />

The M1A1 has been a U.S. military mainstay for decades, with a 120mm 
main gun that can hit something more than two miles away. This tank has 
had various tweaks and improvements since its introduction around 1980, 
including the M1A2 which is basically a technological upgrade, as <a href="http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/abrams.htm" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><em>Fprado.com</em></a> explains.<br />

Both variants are still operated by the American military. <br />

The “invisible armor” provided by Active Protection Systems could be a
 huge boost to the strength of these fighting vehicles on the ground, at
 least when it comes to fighting forces with relatively primitive weapon
 systems.<br />

“I think we’re going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth 
within a decade . . .I think we’re going to have definitive evidence

been hiding this fact for ages. In an effort to transition the US and 
other countries through its reach to a cabal-run oligarchy, our shadow

surface of Lake Ouareau in Quebec, Duru earned himself a spot in the 
Guinness Book of World Records.</span></div>

 the video Duru can be seen hovering around 16ft above the surface of 
the lake, which is much higher than Marty ever achieved in the film

 was bolted on top of one downward-facing fan in his workshop and was 
able to lift more than 117lbs (53kg) to Furze's surprise.</span></div>

 the inventor noted: 'The propellers are pushing against the ground and 
are quite close to the floor, but the higher they go, the less this 
ground effect is going to be because they're going to be pushing against
 air rather than a solid surface.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">'So lifting things is going to become more difficult the higher it gets off the ground.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Furze designed and constructed a lightweight metal S-shaped frame that would stop the vehicle spinning in circles.</span></div>
