The breakthrough puts China one step ahead in the global race to 
harness a new, artificial kind of solar energy for clean and unlimited 
energy, the researchers claim. This has become a pressing concern as 
more of the earth’s natural reserves are rapidly depleting.<br />
The experiment was conducted last week on a magnetic fusion reactor 
at the Institute of Physical Science in Hefei, capital of Jiangsu 
province, according to a statement on the institute’s website on 
Wednesday.<br />

The reactor, officially known as the Experimental Advanced 
Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), was able to heat a hydrogen gas - a hot 
ionised gas called a plasma - to about 50 million Kelvins (49.999 
million degrees Celsius). The interior of our sun is calculated to be 
around 15 million Kelvins.<br />

 According to this thermodynamic scale, absolute zero occurs at zero 
degrees (equivalent to minus 273.15 degrees Celsius), a point at which 
all molecular movement stops.<br />
The temperature reached in Hefei was at the other end of the scale, 
and roughly the same as a mid-sized thermonuclear explosion. The goal of
 the experiment was to approximate the nuclear fusion conditions that 
occur deep inside the sun.<br />

Although at least <a href="http://www.livescience.com/614-record-set-hottest-temperature-earth-3-6-billion-degrees-lab.html" shape="rect">one other experiment</a>
 in the last decade claims to have produced a hotter temperatures than 
this, it has never been duplicated and was unable to match the endurance
 - over one and a half minutes - of the Chinese test.<br />

Meanwhile, physicists in Japan and Europe have been able to reach the
 same temperature as the Chinese team, but not for longer than a minute 
due to concerns of provoking a reactor meltdown.<br />
The EAST was invented by Soviet scientists to control nuclear fusion for power generation.<br />

As a tokamak device, it uses a powerful magnetic field to confine 
plasma in the shape of a torus - imagine a large spinning doughnut -for 
safety reasons due to the phenomenally high temperatures being 
generated. The atoms are effectively held floating in place by 
superconducting magnets.<br />
But controlling hydrogen gas in such a hot and volatile state is a 
formidable challenge, and one that most of the tokomak devices built 
over the last 60 years have not been able to sustain for more than 20 
seconds.<br />
<br />
The scientists in Hefei worked “day and night” to achieve the record 
level of endurance, according to the institute, which serves as a 
subsidiary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.<br />
The team claimed to have solved a number of scientific and 
engineering problems, such as precisely controlling the alignment of the
 magnet, and managing to capture the high-energy particles and heat 
escaping from the “doughnut”.<br />

But they still missed their mark, which was to reach 100 million 
Kelvins for over 1,000 seconds (nearly 17 minutes), they said, adding 
that it would still take years to build a commercially viable plant that
 could operate in a stable manner for several decades.<br />
Unlike the process of nuclear fission that fuels thermal power 
stations around the world today by splitting the atoms of fissile 
materials such as uranium, fusion reactions work by “fusing” two light 
atomic nuclei - for example, two hydrogen atoms - together to release a 
huge amount of heat.<br />
This can produce levels of energy three to four times greater than 
the results of nuclear fission. It also generate almost no radioactive 
waste.<br />
<br />
The problem is the amount of heat created. Whereas nuclear fission 
only generates a few hundred degrees Celsius, fusion requires at least 
100 million degrees Celsius (212 million degrees Fahrenheit).<br />
A researcher involved with the EAST project said data from their 
experiment may be of use to the International Thermonuclear Experimental
 Reactor (ITER) that is now under construction in France.<br />

Just <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/03/world/asia/north-korea-defying-warnings-prepares-long-range-rocket-launch.html?_r=0" target="_blank">as expected</a>,
 North Korea executed another long-range rocket launch on Saturday 
morning. The Hermit Kingdom says the rocket’s mission was to put its 
so-called “Shining Star No. 4 earth viewing satellite” into low-earth 
orbit, and it looks like they did just that.</div>

The launch was first detected by a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sejong_the_Great-class_destroyer" target="_blank">South Korean AEGIS equipped destroyer </a>as the rocket rose from North Korea’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sohae_Satellite_Launching_Station" target="_blank">Sohae Launch Station </a>along the country’s west coast. The first stage separation was seen visually and NORAD said the rocket’s southern route posed no danger to the U.S. or its allies.<br />

Lt. Col. Martin O’Donnell, spokesman for U.S. Strategic Command, <a href="http://spaceflights.news/?p=23141" target="_blank">said the following regarding the success of the launch</a>:<br />

<blockquote>
Initial observations, available on the publicly-available
 website Space-Track.org, indicate these two objects, NORAD catalog 
identification numbers 41332 and 41333, are at an inclination of 97.5 
degrees.</blockquote>
These objects are almost certainly the payload and the rocket’s third stage.<br />

Just looking at the pictures, the rocket used for the launch looks very much like the <em>Unha </em>class rockets used in the past few North Korean launches.<br />
These rockets share a close lineage to the liquid-fueled <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taepodong-2" target="_blank"><em>Taepodong-2</em> </a>series
 of rockets used before them. In other words, North Korea’s actual 
rocket design evolution seems minimal, with the focus seemingly being 
improving the existing design for reliability.<br />
At best it is possible 
they could have introduced a solid-fueled third stage. In all, this 
lineage of rockets has now been in use by North Korea for a decade, with
 the first launch happening in 2006.<br />

 that South Korean lawmakers were told the payload most likely weighed 
around 440 pounds, and that is about double the weight of the payload 
from North Korea’s last major rocket launch in 2012.<br />

North Korea <a href="http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/read-north-koreas-positively-batshit-insane-statement-o-1751339665#_ga=1.263759048.576243720.1452955492">went hard on their usual grandeur-filled fairy tale rhetoric </a>when
 describing the launch: “The fascinating vapor of Juche satellite 
trailing in the clear and blue sky in spring of February on the 
threshold of the Day of the Shining Star.”<br />
<br />

Some will say that these launches should be treated as ballistic 
missile tests more than anything else, and obviously, there is a dual 
use for such a rocket system. Yet these rockets rely on liquid fuel and 
sit on the pad for days before launch, giving ample time for all parties
 to prepare for their use. Nor does North Korea have a warhead capable 
of being used in such a ballistic missile.<br />
<br />

So even though these launches are concerning in terms of development,
 they are not exactly an existential threat to the world at this time. 
Although, in the coming decades, if North Korea’s technological know-how
 continues to slowly improve, new missiles may be just that—especially 
solid-fueled ones that can be launched in short order and moved around 
more easily.<br />
<br />

As always, the <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/06/asia/north-korea-rocket-launch-window/" target="_blank">usual
 chorus within the international community decried the launch as 
breaking U.N. resolutions and defined it as a careless and provocative 
act</a>. It is abundantly clear that North Korea couldn’t care less 
about such international citations and geopolitical concerns so none of 
that really matters, at least in the near term.<br />

The fighter aircraft feature being highly maneuverable. The air intakes 
sit atop the fighter’s fuselage to maximize low-observability and the 
nose section is similar to the YF-23, with a bubble canopy, pointed 
radome and a chine-line along the nose leading edge. <br />

Underneath, bulging weapons bays can be made out, as well as 
apertures possibly for optical targeting systems or even a laser. The 
exhausts are pushed forward along the jet’s upper fuselage to mask their
 heat signatures from lower viewing angles.<br />
<br />
The idea is that combat aircraft can use solid-state laser systems defensively, creating a sanitized sphere of safety around the aircraft,
 shooting down or critically damaging incoming missiles and approaching 
aircraft with their laser turrets. They can also use such a system 
offensively, leveraging their stealth capabilities to sneak up on enemy 
aircraft and striking with speed-of-light accuracy.<br />

Even attacking targets on the ground, such as individual people, with
 pinpoint precision, or shooting down ballistic missiles and other 
targets traditionally relegated to larger and much more complex ground 
or sea-based weapon systems, are possibilities.<br />
<br />
The introduction of nimble and compact lasers on the aerial 
battlefield will likely allow fighter-sized combat aircraft designs to 
cease putting a premium on maneuverability, as lasers are speed-of-light
 weapons. In other words, as long as the enemy can be detected and is 
within the laser’s range, they are at risk of being fried regardless of 
how hard they try to evade via hard turns and other high-g maneuvers. 
Countermeasures will become more about evading initial detection, 
staying outside an opposing aircraft’s laser’s envelope, and confusing 
targeting sensors than out-maneuvering the adversary. In other words, 
the dogfights of the future will look nothing like they do today.<br />
<br />

One issue pointed out by Northrop Grumman is that these lasers, along
 with future engines and avionics, will put out a huge amounts of heat, 
making thermal control a huge concern for stealthy aircraft. Infrared search and track systems,
 both air and ground based, are only becoming more sensitive and 
reliable as time goes on. As a result, future stealthy fighter aircraft 
will have to keep their cool in order to remain undetected over the 
battlefield.<br />
<br />
One way the Pentagon and possibly some defense aerospace contractors 
are looking at dealing with this problem will be by using a large 
thermal accumulator to control the aircraft’s heat signature while using
 laser weaponry, although Northrop Grumman seems to be pursuing a 
different—albeit more shadowy—way of dealing with the problem. <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/northrop-beating-heat-leads-sixth-generation-fighte-420006/" target="_blank"><em>Flightglobal.com</em> talked with Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems President Tom Vice about the issue:</a><br />

“Venting the heat offboard only raises the aircraft’s 
visibility to heat-sealing sensors. Another option is to develop a 
thermal accumulator, which is a path the<a href="http://aviationweek.com/awin/afrl-s-invent-program-tackles-aircraft-system-efficiency" target="_blank"> Air Force Research Laboratory is pursuing under the INVENT program</a>.
 An electrical accumulator stores the energy onboard in the same way as a
 hydraulic accumulator, releasing the latent energy as necessary to 
generate a surge of power.<br />
But Northrop’s sixth-generation fighter
 concept eschews the accumulator concept for thermal management. 
According to Vice, such a system imposes a limitation on the laser 
weapon’s magazine size or firing rate, forcing the pilot to exit combat 
until the accumulator is refilled with energy. Northrop is pursuing a 
concept instead that does not rely on accumulators or offboard venting 
to manage the heat, but Vice declines to elaborate on the company’s 
specific approach to solving the thermal management problem.”</blockquote>
For a sixth-generation fighter like the ones depicted by Northrop 
Grumman, top-end speed and maneuverability may be sacrificed to some 
degree—at least, if the crank-kite flying wing design is used—in order 
achieve many other enhanced capabilities at an affordable cost. For 
instance, packing a laser system and long-range into a 9G tailless, 
supersonic fighter design may not only be prohibitively expensive, but 
also wasteful. By giving up maneuverability and high top-speed 
performance for enhanced stealth and greater fuel and weapons capacity, 
while relying on lasers instead of maneuverability for self defense, 
little is lost while much is gained. <br />
