drastically reduce the journey time to Mars from months to weeks -

 following the successful test of a prototype in 2013, it seems Nasa is 
now considering it for use on a future mission to Mars.</span></div>

Nasa in the final steps of the technology maturation,’ said Dr Franklin 
Chang Diaz, Ad Astra’s Chairman and CEO, in a statement.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">‘We look forward to a very successful partnership as we jointly advance the technology to flight readiness.’</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Over three years, Nasa will give the company about £6.8 million ($10 million) to get the engine almost ready to fly in space.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">This
 will be achieved with a demonstration of their new prototype, the 
VX-200-SS, which will be able to fire continuously for more than 100 
hours.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">A previous test in 2013 saw Ad Astra complete 10,000 successful high power firings of a Vasimr prototype.</span></div>

 this involved short duration bursts for less than a minute. Proving the
 engine works for more than 100 hours will be key to it one day being 
used on a spacecraft.</span></div>

 planets come as close to each other as 33.9 million miles (54.6 million
 km), but can be as distant as 250 million miles (400 million km).</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><span style="font-size: 1.2em;">For this reason spacecraft to Mars, such as the Curiosity rover, have to launch in certain windows when the planets are aligned.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><span style="font-size: 1.2em;">The next window is open from January 2016 to April 2016, and will see the launch of two more missions to the red planet.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><span style="font-size: 1.2em;">For a future manned mission, they will need to launch out in one of the windows and return in another.</span></span></div>

 getting there will take up to nine months. The astronauts will then be 
there waiting for a year until they can come back, again taking up to 
nine months - a total of around three years.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><span style="font-size: 1.2em;">Whether an engine such as Vasimr could shorten the time it would take to cover the distance, though, remains to be seen. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">With this and other technologies, Nasa said in a <a class="" href="http://www.nasa.gov/press/2015/march/nasa-announces-new-partnerships-with-us-industry-for-key-deep-space-capabilities/#.VRvl1PldW_9" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">statement </a>they want to develop exploration capabilities around the moon, and at Mars.</span></div>

 partners were selected for their technical ability to mature key 
technologies and their commitment to the potential applications both for
 government and private sector uses,’ said William Gerstenmaier, 
associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations at Nasa 
Headquarters.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 1.2em;">‘This work ultimately will inform the strategy to move human presence further into the solar system.’</span></div>

 advanced electric propulsion projects, including Vasimr, will develop 
engines that operate in the 50 to 300 kilowatt range.</span></div>

 comparison, current electric propulsion used by Nasa - such as the ion 
engine on the Dawn spacecraft - operates at less than five kilowatts.</span></div>

 seven companies have been picked to work on the habitats that will 
house astronauts as they make their way to Mars in the 2030s.</span></div>

This year, the Pentagon’s advanced research projects 
department will start testing their new “submarine” drone, which can lie
 in wait on the ocean floor for years before ever being launched into 
the skies.<br />
The new drones, being developed by the Defense Advanced Research
  Projects Agency (DARPA), are part of a new focus by the US
  military in developing and improving technology for emerging
  threats.<br />
<br />
These deployable, unmanned systems and sensors can theoretically
  lie on the deep-ocean floor for years at time in anticipation of
  the US Navy’s need for non-lethal assistance. When needed, the
  deep-sea nodes can be activated remotely and recalled to the
  surface.<br />

DARPA will specifically be testing whether the drones can survive
  for years under extreme pressure before being triggered from a
  distance, and whether they can rise through a water column and
  relay information. The tests are part of DARPA’s two phases under
  its Upward Falling Payloads (UFP) program.

The UFP’s would be equipped with electronic and low-power laser
  attack capabilities, surveillance sensors, and airborne and
  aquatic drones that would have the ability to act as decoys or
  offer intelligence and targeting data.<br />

Much of the testing will be done in the Western Pacific. Nearly
  50 percent of the world’s oceans are deeper than 2.5 miles (4km),
  which provides areas of concealment and storage so assets can
  remain undetected for long periods of time and still be recalled
  when needed. The vastness also allows for simultaneous operation
  across great distances.<br />

“<i>Today, the US Navy puts capability on the ocean floor using
  very capable but fairly expensive submarine platforms,</i>” said
  Steven H. Walker, deputy director of DARPA. “<i>What we’d like
  to do in this program is preposition capability on the ocean

The US Navy already uses ocean-faring drones called Slocum
  Gliders to scan the sea and transmit information – mostly weather
  and surveillance data – to ships. These drones don’t need fuel to
  operate, but use ocean currents for propulsion and buoyancy to
  shift direction.

DARPA released a biennial report last week summarizing its
  evolving focus to maintain America’s strategic position in the
  world.<br />

“<i>DARPA’s mission and philosophy have held steady for decades,
  but the world around DARPA has changed dramatically,</i>” the
  report says. <i>“Those changes include some remarkable and even
  astonishing scientific and technological advances … at the same
  time, the world is experiencing some deeply disturbing technical,
  economic and geopolitical shifts that pose threats to US
  preeminence and stability.”</i>

DARPA is seeking a 59 percent increase in the UFP budget, from
  $11.9 million to 19 million, it was reported in March. But
  overall, President Barack Obama requested a $3 billion budget for
  DARPA for the fiscal year 2016, a slight increase over previous
  years. This would enable the agency to carry out ambitious
  project in four areas outlined in its biennial report – Rethink
  Complex Military Systems; Master the Information Explosion;
  Harness Biology as Technology; and Expand the Technological
  Frontier.<br />

“<i>The reason we’re able to have this big impact is because we
  work with and tap the resources of a vast technological
  ecosystem,</i>” DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar said in a press
  briefing. “<i>Much is done with universities and companies of
  every stripe – defense contractors, but also commercial companies
  as small as startups and as big as major firms.”</i>

of people in the initial blast and bury much of the United States in

 it from the threat posed by tsunamis, one could be triggered in the 
United States with an attack on the San Andreas fault.</div>

geophysical point of view, is the San Andreas fault – 1300 kilometers 
between the Pacific and North American plates … a detonation of a 
nuclear weapon there can trigger catastrophic events like a coast-scale 
tsunami which can completely destroy the infrastructure of the United

Sections of the San Andreas fault are overdue for major 
earthquake activity. “Researchers found that three sections of the San

PLA-AF recently received 15 H-6K
 bombers with nuclear capabilities, according to British military digest
 Jane’s Defence Weekly.<br />
<br />
The H-6K, an updated version of the H-6 bomber, is a medium-sized craft 
designed for long-range attacks, stand-off attacks and large-area air 
patrol.<br />
Unlike its predecessor, the H-6K can carry cruise missiles under
 its wings.<br />
The H6-K also maneuvers more deftly than the H-6 and 
requires a smaller crew to operate.<br />
Jane’s Defence was the first media 
outlet to confirm that the H6-K had formally entered active service.<br />
<br />
The most visible departure from the H-6 is the H6-K’s nose, where a nose
 randome has replaced a navigation cabin. Military expert Fu Qianshao 
said that the H6-K’s nose should greatly improve avionics, search and 
detection, navigation, fire control and weapon precision.<br />
<br />
Fu said that the H-6K has a larger engine inlet than does the H-6, which
 may mean that the newer bomber’s engines have greater thrust. If so, 
the H-6K would also have a greater maximum takeoff weight and payload 
than the H-6.<br />
A more favorable weight-to-thrust ratio would improve fuel
 efficiency and lengthen cruising range, Fu said.<br />
<br />
H-6K reportedly has a combat radius of 3,500 KM. The nuclear-capable 
Changjian (long sword)-10 cruise missiles it carries have a range of 
1,500-2,000 KM, effectively extending the bomber’s combat range to 
4,000-5,000 KM - long enough to reach Okinawa, Guam and even Hawaii from
 China’s mainland.<br />
<br />
Analysts stipulated that PLA Air Force missiles be able to reach Taiwan,
 southwestern Japan and Guam, a range of control that requires a 
3,000-KM combat radius and powerful attack capability. Only the combined
 combat radius of the H6-K and Changjian-10 currently satisfy the length 
requirement.<br />

The military channel of people.com.cn carried a report on CCTV’s 
interview with Chinese military expert Real Admiral Yin Zhuo about the 3
 new nuclear submarines.
<br />
As CCTV is China’s top official TV media and Real Admiral is a navy 
insider, we believe, the report provides rare official information about
 China’s nuclear submarines.<br />
<br />

First, Real Admiral Yin told the reporter that the design standards 
of China’s nuclear submarines are in the main equal to usual world 
standards.<br />

When CCTV quotes media report that as 093G has Vertical Launch Systerm (VLS), it is better by 
far than Russia’s Oscar-class nuclear submarine and a real “aircraft 
carrier killer”. Yin said that was not a scientific view. <br />

He said judging by the photo, the displacement of a 093G was but a 
few thousand tons but that of Russia’s Oscar-class is 20,000 tons.<br />
 It 
can carry 24 missiles 4 tons each with a large range and supersonic 
speed. That is formidable fire power. A 093G is better in its VLS that 
enable it to attack targets in all direction.<br />
<br />

Yin said: the initial design of 093G meant to give 093G powerful 
anti-ship and defense-breaking capabilities. The capabilities of land 
attack and relatively strong anti-submarine capabilities were added to 
the design later.<br />
<br />

In addition, Yin revealed that a submarine was only able to detect 
surface ships within a distance of several dozen of kilometers, but the 
range of its anti-ship missile has a range of a few hundred kilometers 
while its anti-ground cruise missile has a range exceeding 1,000 
kilometers.<br />
Therefore, the submarine relies on the information provided 
by satellite and aircraft, which transmit the information to the 
submarine through land-based long-wave radio station.<br />
<br />

He said, “A submarine needs a full set of external communication 
system to ensure its combat capabilities. At present, we have complete 
capabilities to safeguard our Type 093G nuclear submarines. We can 
provide such protection no matter where they have sailed to for battle 
operation.<br />

US Long-Range Drone Will Patrol The Oceans Of The Future

DARPA’s latest drone program just took a turn for the better. The 
Tactically Exploited Reconnaissance Node (TERN) is designed as a Medium 
Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) flyer for the U.S. Navy. Like their avian
 namesake, TERN will be a sea-based flyer. (It is unlikely that the MALE
 TERN will share male terns <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="https://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/auk/v085n04/p0694-p0694.pdf" target="_blank">penchant for mating displays</a>, however). The drone is designed as a sort of super crow’s nest, flying from small vessels and scouting out the ocean ahead.<br />
<br />

Earlier this week DARPA <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="http://www.darpa.mil/NewsEvents/Releases/2015/03/23.aspx" target="_blank">awarded contracts</a>
 to AeroVironment and Northrop Grumman, tasking them with take the TERN 
to term. The U.S. Navy already has drones it can fly from ships, but 
they’re either small, like the <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/scaneagle-uav/" target="_blank">ScanEagle</a>, helicopter-sized, like the <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=1100&tid=2150&ct=1" target="_blank">Firescout</a>, or huge, like the <a class="linkTargets-processed external" href="http://www.ga-asi.com/products/aircraft/predator_c.php" target="_blank">Sea Avenger</a>.<br />
<br />
We're not sure how big TERN will be yet, but it is designed to last 
longer than the small drones, fly farther than the helicopters, and 
operate from much smaller ships, like the <a class="linkTargets-processed" href="http://www.popsci.com/tags/lcs">Littoral Combat Ship</a> which can’t accommodate larger planes.<br />
<br />

When completed, TERN will carry up to 600 pounds of sensors and 
equipment, and it will fly as far as 1,000 miles away from its host 
ship, watching vast swathes of the ocean that would otherwise go 
un-surveilled.<br />
